King: "Thanks be to THE MAN!"

You get the idea. I can't wait to see if they use the literal translation of those names for America, and if the US Voice Actors can say those lines without laughing.

My guess is that they'll probably drop the "The" on all of them except "The End" which would sound even more silly if it was just "End".

You see? Personally I wouldn't mind them leaving the "The" on their names. It's not like it's the most ridiculous names the series has had. I mean, who here didn't chuckle or give a :wtf: when they heard the name "Revolver Ocelot" for the first time?

I liked the MegaMan X-esque names, and they only used them for the names of the bosses in two games :(

finally saw the 8 minute trailer. good stuff. every time i see parts of the scene with snake in the cemetery with the full militray dress on......chills. good looking cinematography there, and with the music. chills man.

I think some hollywood types need to start hiring Kojima to cut movie trailers.

I can't watch movie trailers anymore, 'cause they inevitably spoil the movie, but every trailer for MGS1,2,and 3 has been full of stuff that makes you wanna play the game, without giving too much away.

Hollywood could learn something.

He was originally meant to be a Lynx according to Kojima. Revolver Lynx doesn't have the same ring to it though.

The main palette color I was going for MGS3 would have been something more green, the game majorly taking place in the jungle...but it doesn't look too bad.

Got the OPM demo at Blockbuster.

The demo is the actual beginning of the game. Its all in Japanese with English subtitles. The intro was really cool until you got to the radio part which is basically the codec. It takes FOREVER for the chit chat to stop. Even skipping it took some time. Once you retrieve your backback you actually get to screw around with a bunch of weapons. Theres a shotgun and oh yes does it kick some ass. Shoot some soldiers point blank with it and they actually get blown back! The knife is cool but I couldnt figure out how to slit anyones throat. Theres also rope bridge that you have to cross and you can go "HANG ON LADY, WE GOING FOR A RIDE" Dr. Jones style. I couldnt get use to the controls because I havent played PS2 for a long time and I think Splinter Cell's controls have spoiled me. It now irritates me that I cant move the camera completely, and not having a radar that tells you which direction enemies are looking is tuff.
Not really sure what else to say so just ask, or go out and spend the $10 and buy the demo yourselves.

Great. More of Kojima's long-winded bullshit. This game is going to have the same endless story overload that marred the other two games.

MGS1 & 2 were good games, but not when I was staring at 2 hour long codec screens or cinemas. Kojima needs to learn how to seemlessly intergrate the story with the fucking gameplay. I was hoping for a huge free-roaming jungle that I could just enjoy sneaking through...but now I know it's going to be broken up with storyline bullshit every 5 minutes, giving the game the feeling of small, interconnected mini-games (like the first 2) as opposed to a complete gameplay experience.

This is definitely my biggest issue with the MGS games. I couldn't believe it when I first played MGS to be interrupted by some douchebag on codec telling me how to climb a ladder or something disgustingly simple like that.

Actually, I think since Kojima likes dialogue and cinematics so much he should make another game like Snatcher. I enjoyed it more than any Metal Gear game.

The background is all white and it has a bunch of red !!! on it with the MGS name in the corner. Pretty eye catchy. Nice fat issue too. Worth reading even without the disc.

I've never had a problem with the cutscenes or the codec scenes being long. In fact I prefer those to the shortened condensed garbage that passes for storylines in most games these days. I'm perfectly happy with the 'movie-I-can-play' format Kojima's got going here. Maybe I'm the only one, but if you took out the drawn out dialogue and presentation of the MGS series I'd probably be a lot less interested in it.

Agree and disagree. I have no problem with length of the cutscenes or codec calls, but only when they're relevant and not over-bearing in trying to get a point across. They needed to leave a lot of crap in the when-you-call-them catorgory and not make it required listening/watching.

Same here, but it still really needs an editor. And someone who has a clue what they're writing about, too much stuff in MGS2 made absolutely no sense at all (at least MGS' stupidity pretty much just stuck to Kojima not knowing how genes worked).

Actually, I tried a demo of it not too long ago, and I actually thought it seemed pretty cool. It was a 2-part demo where you controlled a hovercraft shooting down ships on water and then snuck around on foot through a factory or something. I've been meaning to give it at the very least a rent.

I actually feel the exact opposite, as long as they replaced the drawn-out dialogue with additional gameplay.

Seriously, I just feel that the MGS series plays so damn well that it's a shame that it's just not fully realized because just when you start getting into that gameplay zone yet another 15 minute codec conversation suddenly butts in with somebody asking stupid shit like, "Snake, do you believe in love on the battlefield?" or "Live, Snake...LIVE!" :wtf:. I really feel it hurts the game as a whole and prevents it from being as good as it can be.

Though, I do agree with you that the story of many games nowadays seem little more than an afterthought. It's nice that Kojima attempts to buck that trend and tell a tale with some depth, but if Snake Eater's story ends up another convoluted mess like Sons of Liberty's did, he can really kiss my ass. It's not worth scarificing gameplay.

That's pretty much his style anyway. Policenauts was pretty verbose too, to the point of having one of the main villains inavertedly reveal his whole plot to a viewing public for 10-20 minutes. I think the fact that the only games he made between Metal Gear 2 and Metal Gear Solid were all adventure games (Snatcher and Policenauts and his involvement in the Tokimemo Drama Series) is a pretty good indications as to why the current Metal Gear games are the way they are.

What have we learned from Katamari Damacy? We've learned to just fucking buy it if it's 20 bucks and people say it's great.

I would be upset if they did that, but what Kojima really needs to do is have a "no bullshit mode" which cuts the dialogue down to the bare essentials like "Snake we have to go over there".

Just read that if Snake eats rotten food you can wiggle the left analog stick back and forth to make him vomit so he doesn't have to deal with being poisoned.

I love the goofy little touches this series has.

I got the latest OPM with the demo a few days ago. The game is almost unlike the previous Metal Gear games. It's way more stealth-oriented and actually requires to coordinate your uniform and face paint to blend in, rather than simply take advantages of blind spots or the enemy's narrow point of view. When you're discovered, the game quickly goes into Alert Mode, instead of simply waiting for the soldier to call reinforcements.

There are no rations in the demo. Instead, Snake recovers his energy by being idle and using his stamina. There are quite a variety of animals which can be eaten in the demo, including snakes and bird. Living animals (fresh meat) are kept in cages (three in the demo), apart from the dead ones (you can also obtains mushrooms, fruits and even a hornest nest). You can hear Snake react to his food after digesting it. Reactions ranges between "mazui" (yuck), "madamada" (so-so) and "saikou da" (delicious).

The new CQC system allows for way more variety in combat. No longer are you limited to the previous games' stranglehold or punch/punch/kick combos. You can now do several offensive maneuvers such as pushing enemies into the ground or holding a knife agaisnt his throw. You can interrogate soldiers by pushing L3, but they simply give standard tips. It took me quite a while to learn how to use the knife hold without slashing an enemy's throat.

My only gripe with the game is with the long loading times between the actual game and during radio sequences. It takes quite awhile for the game to load to the transceiver screen. Thankfully, this is only an apparent side-effect of the demo being bundled with other demos (reportedly, the stand-alone E3 demo didn't have this problem) and will be fixed in the finished version. As for the radio mode itself, the interface is quite a departure from the previous games. Instead of the green-toned faces from the previous game, you can only see Snake kneeling while establishing contact (which is clearly meant to be a throwback to the very first MSX game). Your contact isn't shown during these conversations, but instead the player is presented with photographs of them and personal data. Otherwise, the radio works the same way as it did in the previous games.

The cut-scenes are long as usual, but so far they don't as annoyingly long as those in MGS2. I could've done without The Boss's lecture of patriotism and loyalty though. Thankfully, you scan still fast-foward these radio conversation by pressing the square button.

MGS3 is starting to look very promising and already shows a great deal of improvement over MGS2. While the demo isn't very long (there's only four or five areas), there's quite a bit to do and experiment. Hopefully, the ratio of actual gameplay segments over cut-scenes will be more balanced this time.

It's way harder without the radar from the pervious games, too. Good thing you have a gadget in your backpack that is similar, but it's battery life is limited.

Man, am I glad to hear that. Whenever the radio started loading, it froze the game for so long I thought it had fucking crashed. So annoying.

As long as you're playing as Snake, or at least a Snake-like character, I'm happy. IGN confirmed that the same guy's doing his voice (David Hayter) that did it in 1 & 2.

BTW, this snippet of dialogue from one of the bosses in MGS3 has me a bit...concerned for the quality of the overall story:

Meh. Call me a Japanophile if you will, but I prefer Otsuka (the Japanese voice of Snake). Otsuka's voice sounds more natural, as opposed to the rasping voice in Hayter's Snake, which sounds very forced.

For some reason, the overall English voice acting (from what I've heard in the trailers) doesn't sound very good. Ocelot sounds like he's voiced by the same ninny that provided Raiden's voice, a far cry from the older Zimmermann-voiced incarnation of the character.

Finally played the demo.

It's not half the demo that the MGS2 demo was. It wasn't very impressive at all. The best parts were in the Codec conversations, like finding out about Naked Snake's "Boss" and whatnot. The gameplay was totally =/ It felt a little clunky to me.

Oh, and don't forget that the demo resets if you stand still too long. STEALTH ACTION, BITCHES!

I only get mags that cover all consoles (EGM, Game Informer, GMR) and from what I can remember, it only got one cover in a few months time (while GTA:SA and Halo 2 have had like what, 5 or 6?), and a very boring preview.

I think the game would be worth getting if the story wasn't going to be total garbage. All people want is Solid Snake, a good mission, and some sneaking, not all this bullshit he threw into MGS 2.

Seriously... after the fantastic MGS2 demo, we get this: 5 rooms that take 15 minutes to cross, with another 15 minutes of (admittedly fairly interesting) radio conversation. No boss fight, no shooting lights, no stuffing people into lockers, no tearing up glass or produce. Just a basic looking forest with huge Wind Waker-style grass to hide in.

I think the camouflage is the dumbest thing ever. You have a stealth % that tells you how hidden you are. When you change environments, you have to go into the menu, go into camouflage, and look. Each outfit is rated in comparison to your environment, but one is ALWAYS the CLEAR winner. You click it, and the effect is instant. Why do I have to go into the menu every few minutes to do something that requires no thinking or experimentation whatsoever and will become rote and tedious after 10 minutes of play? Give me a fucking chameleon suit and stfu.

I do agree a quicker system is needed to access both camo and food, but in defense of the '5 rooms' keep in mind that combined spatially I'd say the two are equal. Aside from the deck there was nowhere as big ANYWHERE in MGS: SoL compared to the 5 areas we are provided in this demo.

And come on, the boss you fight in the MGS2 demo is fucking Olga, possibly the most boring boss fight in the series yet, complete with uninteresting rambling.

Also, Mzo, if you'd actually taken some time with the demo you'd see there is plenty of glass to break. They're called windows.

The Olga fight was cool. It showed off the new first person aiming, you could shoot lights out, and you could shoot that tarp and make it flap in the wind. I thought it was a pretty badass boss fight that made you use the new controls.

I try to avoid wasting time on things I think suck. 2 friends and I did take turns playing the demo for a good hour or so, though. We tried all the weapons out and messed around for a while.

The shotgun was cool, but to use it you kind of had to ignore the whole "stealth" thing.

It was basically a repeat of the Sniper Wolf battle only at ten feet and with boring dialogue. Yeah, okay the tarp and light were nice, but that's like icing on a cake made of shit. The cake is still shit.

It's nothing compared to fighting Solidus in the Harrier Jet or Psycho Mantis in the Commander's Office.

That's nothing new. Using the M-16 or the AKS-74U in SoL was only for times when stealth went right out the window. I am glad they did add the shotgun in this game, that was a big oversight in SoL, letting the enemies have it but not you.

The sword was pretty good. One of the few things I liked in that game.

The Psycho Mantis fight (PUT THE CONTROLLER ON THE FLOOR, USE CONTROLLER PORT 2 SNAKE) is a great example of the hokey 4th wall-breaking dialogue that I've never appreciated in the MGS series =/

It's little gimmicky touches like that, breaking glass, melting ice, etc. that I think vaults the MGS series over anything else made in the last ten years. They're all great at establishing immersion, which is even more of a profound accomplishment considering how utterly ridiculously cliche and confusing the setting is.

After playing 2 Splinter Cell games and then playing the MGS3 demo I think going back to not controlling the camera is total ass. So you can control it a little bit, big deal, it still bites ass.

I don't see that as immersive either. That puzzle in the first MGS where they tell you to check the back of "the CD case" for a codec number, and they meant the game case, is one of the worst ideas ever.

As for the demo, it pissed me off, and I declare it shitty because of the resetting that happens if you sit around and wait (which is pretty much necessary). It took me like 5 tries to get into that door at the end and then NOTHING HAPPENED. The camo is tedious too. Other than that, I think the jungle setting is cool, but not as big of a change as I thought it would be judging from the rooms in the demo.

I still think it will be a great game though, but I thought MGS and MGS2 were great too.

You can go back to terrible buggy AI if you'd like. I, for one, consider level design, functional AI, and 100% perfect presentation more important than being able to move the camera, especially when the game is designed around your inability to rotate it completely freely.

I've never once had a problem with cameras in Metal Gear, and I don't understand why anyone else did. Though with MGS3 having no radar (at least last I read), it could definitely be trickier to navigate. I'll have to play it myself.

I liked the camera in MGS, I didn't like the behind the back camera of MGS2, and the camera in MGS3 does lead to a bit of trial and error when you can't see people that are right around the corner from you.

MGS3 has the worst camera of the series, which means it's the only one that gave me any problems at all.

It's not that I don't think Hayter's voice is bad, mind you, it's just that his rasp sounds a bit too forced and a bit too cartoony, whereas Otsuka uses a natural voice for Snake. That's my preference of course.

To be honest, I think the dubbing in the localized MGS games has become progressively worse with each installment. The dubbing went from excellent in MGS1, to alright in MGS2 and then just plain dull in Twin Snakes (granted, it was just a remake and I don't think the actors were too pleased to do the same game again, even with the higher paychecks). The dubbing in MGS3 (judging from what I've seen in the latest trailers) leaves alot to be desired. Especially the younger Ocelot's voice, who sounds like a punk.

Funny that you joke about Raiden. In the Japanese MGS2, Raiden actually sounded less like a wuss and more like Snake himself.

Agreed. Kojima's storytelling retardedness is ruining what could have been an awesome series.

The PS1 original will always be the best Metal Gear game. Most straightforward story of the three, and no bullshit with lying to the fans about playing as Solid Snake and pulling the rug out from under you.

And I agree, the camera in MGS3 (combined with the lack of the radar) is annoying.

Eh, I don't know. I kind of like the way the MGS series does it kind of makes me feel more involved. I actually thought the "look on back of the CD case " puzzle in MGS1 was cute. Sucks for someone if they bought the game used without a case, however.

so theres a percentage meter for the camo.....but they took out the radar. color that odd and i never thought about it until right now. they took the radar out to make it harder and more realistic but basically make the camo retard proof.

To their credit, there is no radar because it's in the past. You have a motion sensor (that drains battery power) and a loud ass sonar that enemies can hear and also drains battery power.

You can also go into 1st person whenever you want, and the leaning on a wall thing whips the camera around. You can also still peek around corners, but I got spotted every time I tried it. Fat head Snake >=(

Yeah but I'd like to navigate the forest seeing what's in front of me rather than what's underneath my feet. You still can't move around in first person unless your crawling through grass. I don't see the benefit to putting the camera above you unless it's to make it more difficult.

No, you're right. The camera system wasn't working out too well in the demo, it was one of my complaints.

Far overhead worked well in the square rooms setting of MGS (based on the old Metal Gears), but the forest areas are too wide and the camera too low to really help out. You can scroll it in any direction for a limited distance whenever you want with the R stick, though.

Other than that though I think the game is really well made, I wish they would just throw in the option to choose the camera position. What happened a few times is I'd run around go against a tree and the camera would shift to show me behind then as soon as I came off it would flip back up top and I was totally lost orientation wise. Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Watched the trailer on the new PSM DVD, and I just have to say that the James Bond-inspired "Snake Eater" tune is the gayest song I've ever heard in my life, especially when used for a supposedly bad-ass jungle survival game.

I've heard parts of it before in other trailers, but this time we're treated to the entire song, beginning to end. Seriously, if you're worried that your game might look TOO cool, just release a trailer of it set to this music.
