Help with car insurance

I've been looking into car insurance lately, but I really don't follow what kind of converage I'm getting for how much I pay. I've compared rates between a lot of different companies, and while some offer some very cheap packages, I'm really not sure if I'm covered for anything other than being allowed to drive.

Does anyone have any recommendations for cheap car insurace with a decent ammount of coverage? I mean, really cheap, because I can't afford a lot.

Edit: I'm not even asking for links, I'll do all the work myself, just a drop a name if you can.

I have All State. They're great, but they aren't cheap, especially if you get a full coverage package. I would probably go with Geico. They're supposed to be really cheap. You at least need liability, I think.

Your town/state may have requirements for insurance, too.

Dude, check out esurance. I had progressive and was paying $350. Switched to esurance with the same exact coverages and I am now paying $187.

Ask yourself 3 questions:

1. Have I been/will I get into an accident while I have this Insurance?
2. If I do, how much can I spend when it happens?
3. And what kind of service will I expect?

If you want to live dangerously and are made of Teflon, go with the cheapest dirt bag insurance co. you can find printed on a billboard downtown and buy the lowest coverages available. Just don’t expect them to fix your car.

Otherwise, my advice is to get the largest deductible you can afford, then save that $ in an account for when you need it. It will lower your rate big time. Also, always go with at least $25 car rental coverage, it's not much, you'll need it, and no one rents a car for 20 even.

As far as brands - - it's really difficult to say. There are so many factors: region, age, sex, The CFO's libido, etc.

I've had experience with State Farm, Gieco and Safeco. I bought SF because it was the cheapest for my demographics. Then, when I had a claim, their customer support was excellent. I used to work for Safeco and although we had great service, our rates were generally too high. Let’s just say few employees have insurance with them. Geico was friendly, but their rates were just above that of SF so I never switched over to them. Also I have friends who work there and they claim they do a good job.

I have Mercury, they're really cheap compared to the big names like Gieco, Pregressive and all those. Not sure how thier service is because i've never made a claim, but they've been nice to me for everything else.

get your insurance reduced is to negotiate. If you have written quotes from another insurance company then take it to your existing insurer and see if they would be wiling to match it. I'm a Geico fan. Progressive advertises that they do comparitive quotes, since the best rate will often vary depending on your state and circumstances. I've read some nasty shit about Esurance...like they force you to put half the premium down up front (or pay significantly more), and then raise the rates after issuance. Dunno how true this is, but the anecdotes kept me away.
