Well, perhaps Spielberg should have built up to the 'shields down' scene, by showing an actual scene wherein birds were destroyed by the tripods shields? Then again, perhaps he omitted such a scene purposedly to engage us in the mayhem/chaos of the moment. I mean, the soldiers didn't understand it at first either!

Yes, your memory is indeed hazy, young sir. Tim Robbins is the one who looks out of the window and sees 'something' horrible. Watching this constantly rambling lunatic stunned to silence was simply genius. Then he steps back and THEN cruise enters to see a body mutilation of some sorts. The mist of blood was also an eerie moment which appeared to faze the protagonist.

I love the idea of actually not knowing WHAT the aliens are doing, other than it's something incomprehensible and very very bad. Painting everything out and describing every little detail often removes some of the suspense and charm.
We can argue and debate for ever, but we will never truly know what hijinx those strangers from the sky were up to!

PS. there is no such word as "tenticle" - Either you mean testicle or tentacle...

Man, how could people not have picked up on what the birds were doing? I also liked it because they were probably smelling some fresh 'n tasty, dead aliens inside.

EDIT: And wouldn't it be nice if Spielberg bugged the studio to let him include the original film when the DVD is released?

I want to see that scene again now, I remember it differently.

About SPR.. I thought that movie was overall crap, but I don't think I've seen a movie that depicts a hellish 'no safe zone' environment quite as well as SPR (also, the camera work was perfect). There were no 'lucky bastards' or individual heroes in that movie; everyone that was supposed to die, died.

In WotW otoh, there was an utter lack of collateral damage scenes (when the tripod tipped the boat over, I expected to see more people fall overboard and get hit by falling cars.. there were no shots of injured bodies when the streets and buildings broke apart during the first alien attack scene.. There are more examples I won't bother listing) and too many 'lucky' conveniences that killed any suspension of belief that I would have had if someone else directed the movie, or if Spielberg was on top of his game.
