The Bittorrent crash of 2004

Sorry if this should go in circuit, but I thought it might be worth a little more here.

In case you guys are not into torrents or have not yet caught on, quite a few major and even minor torrent sites have bitten the bullitt. Among them suprnova and torrentbits Now, nobody was really expecting these places to stay open forever, but I for one was suprised to see such a large overwhelming effort to have so many torrent sites shut down in so little time. It has even managed to hit one of my favorite small trackers that was host to cult and experimental film. Not sure if some of these sites havent just shut down to avoid some heat for the time being, but it seems like a pretty big blow to torrent users.

What is bittorrent, even?

I was at my friend's house last night, and his wife was talking about how she couldn't find the option to download stuff from her usual site last night. I told her that I wondered if it wasn't because of the supposed BT crackdown that was coming about.

Thankfully, my usual torrent sites are still around, and typically have nothing to do with movies.

I morn the loss of suprnova.

Damn.. this was so sudden. I fully expected Suprnova to go down soon as it was way too big and well known for its own good, but I never expected so many other sites to go down in one big swoop. I also visited Torrentbits from time to time and other torrent sites like filelist, elitetorrents..etc..are all gone. wow

I used to love getting torrents of 80's cartoons and tv shows..oh well..not anymore. Whats worse is that my HDD crapped out before I could save them. ugh..

Well, the technology will not go away and other torrent sites will eventually open while others will close. This technology has plenty of great legal uses such as downloading Linux ISO's, big programs, patches (3dgamers also uses torrents to download big patches as an option)..etc.

sucks that it happened so suddenly but it was expected.

Where the hell am I going to go for torrents of TV shows I miss now?

Torrents are not gonna die, they account for 35% of traffic on the net. The only thing MPAA can do about the non-US sites like China's BT servers is to just to a DOS attack on them like they did to Suprnova once. It seems that their hand can reach as far as europe. But if you put servers in Cayman islands or Switzerland, somewhere neutral... then.

Well, Found the replacement for SuprNova for now. At least that one works, and has a good selection. Shutdown didnt affected it. At least not yet.

wow, you have been gone from the net for awhile. BT is (was?) basically the new Napster. Instead of just audio, you could find anything. Full albums, dvd rips, movie screeners, every kind of warez you could think off.

There are links to files, when you start one, you download the file from other people that have it. You download and upload at the same time. If a lot of people have that BT file open, it downloads faster. Once you get the whole file, you're suppossed to keep it open so others can get it. If everyone closes it, the link dies.

And just like Napster, it got too popular.

This german site I've been using for my Gantz fix is still up. They seem to been fighting em off pretty good cause they post emails from groups and their replies back.

so where the hell can you get album torrents from now? i primarily used suprnova.....

Like any of us had the money to buy anything that was copyrighted anyway.

I get my music primarly from http://www.indietorrents.com/ They have all kinds of obscure and cool stuff, all of which is RIAA safe. Just have to get and keep a decent ratio.

And I just figured out what bittorrent was and how to use it.

This gets me thinking... why can't we all just host a few torrents of our favourite songs and whatnot. Make a playlist, or a mix CD and swap em back and forth between each other.

A couple of things I never quite understood about BT sites/trackers:

-That quite a few of them are semi-private (mainly by closed membership). Apparently this is standard operating procedures with Asian BT sites, and this really is an issue of bandwidth. I would figure that any BT site that draws enough traffic could make money with the right ad deals and donation schemes, but what do I know.

-There is always a demand for users to keep a ratio of one or better... too bad that is something everyone will never achieve. There is a 1:1 correspondence between uploaded and downloaded bits in a Bittorrent swarm. For every user that has a ratio +N bytes above 1, there is a set of users who equal the difference -N.

Bittorrent != Napster -- Napster was a centralized service, BT is a concept that can be used in a myarid of ways. If someone gets the BT techolongy outlawed, they may as well outlaw the Internet (since you can use every Internet service, from webpages to FTP to Usenet to e-mail for illegal acts).

It doesn't really bother me that public torrent sites are shutting down left and right. I mean, it was bound to happen eventually. But for those of you who think the bittorrent "protocol" will be outlawed - you're seriously nuts. The government simply can't "outlaw" a protocol. ISPs may packet shape data coming down those specific ports, which would basically kill your ability to use BT, but there's no way they can simply do away with the software.

Wrong. The reason the ratio is so hard to keep is because YOU SHOULD BE RIPPING MEDIA AND UPLOADING IT.

Rip a movie or two from Blockbuster, upload that shit and your ratio will go through the roof.

Bit comet does all this for you. Also there is teh private torrent network between a few users here, but the person who set it up should be the one to talk about it.

I was using that analogy in terms of use and how when the tech got too popular, it gathered unwanted attention to it.

If you are telling me that the is not a 1:1 correspondence in data transferred in BT swarms, you are flat-out fucking wrong. Where is the data magically appearing from? That is why seeding is important -- it adds to the global capacity of the bittorrent (which is the sum of the contributed upstream bandwidth of all of the users in the swarm). Even with everyone seeding though, a good number of those users will be <1.

In an ideal setting, everyone would contribute what they can -- and then half of the community would be >1, and half of it would be <1.

Dipstick, mathwise you are correct. You are forgetting the factor in human involvement though. There will always be people who will run in and grab a gig as fast as possible and never upload anything. Add up all these factors and a 1 ratio is extremely realistic. Ive never had any problems getting my ratio over one on any torrent site.

Hey man, there's one FTP on GamingForce that gives me a 250 kb / s download.

It's down right now because the guy went home from christmas (he runs it out of college), but when it gets back, it's the best FTP hands down on there.

Hey, all you people who want into Indietorrents. They are not really to progressive on that whole invite thing, so who knows when the fuck they are going to implement it. However, they frequently prune lots of accounts which allows more people to sign up. My suggestion is to just check the site farely often and you should be able to get in. Let me know ifyou do.
