A friend of mine is getting some time slots for public access in Seattle and he wants to use a half hour for games. We already have footage of Prikura Daisakusen, DoDonPachi, some funny cutscenes from Shin Shinobi Den, and Metal Slug 3 to put on the air. We mainly just want to see such great, obscure games get on TV, but we don't have any real content or commentary ready for it.
So any ideas as to what to put in the show? Strategies? Reviews? 'Shout-outs' to TNL members?
Suggestions, please...

Hmmm, I wonder what ever happened to that other guy who started a thread just like this.
Anyway, this is what I told him:
1. Don't appear on camera, do everything via voice overs, showing nothing but game footage, because (aside from your friends) people are watching this show for games, not to look at you.
2. Do not have a section devoted to cheat codes, but full blown strategies is alright, as long as it's actually something useful, and not the kind of info one could easily find within the instruction manual (like extended play does).
3. You don't have to do game news, but if feel that you must, keep it short.
4. If there are commercial breaks, do little trivia games in between to keep things interesting.
5. Reviews are key, make these nice and in depth, and stray away from the 1 to 5 star rating system.
6. Now this is the most important: There must be a classic gaming section at the end.
It looks like you're targeting imports to air. Great idea! What better way to let USA know what they're missing out on. I'd attach an email address of sorts at the end of your program to allow possible viewers a voice. That way if you get a surprising amount of responses you could let the respective company know (or possible publishers).

Oh and when you finally get this thing on the air, be sure to put some clips online.

As much as we all stroking our own egos at some point, I fully agree here. It wasn't really until trying to watch one or two of Gamespot's video reviews that I realized how much I didn't want to see that person and squinted at the background to try and see how the game was running.Quote:

Yes, do reviews and do them like this. I helped create a site with reviews at one point, and I reduced the scores to three levels which basically ended up as: crap (Worthless POS), decent(Middle of the Road), great (Smoother Then a Baby's Bottom). But even the loss of that would be good, they should be able to tell from how your speak of the game how good you think it is, but explain why. I think you should keep it simple. Do 3-4 games on each show. One popular, one sleeper, one older, one classic. That keeps a nice mix of thing. Then describe it, review it and etc. If you can get good videos of the games that would be really cool (Mode7 has allready offered up his stuff...which would be hella cool to see considering it would take a year for me to see one of them).
Just do what you guys think is fun though. That is all that really matters.
Also, what are you guys going to be editing this on? Will it be all analog or are you going the digital route? If so, what program. Just wondering.
Mode7- I'll definitely give your site address for people to check out. Not sure how to get your footage on the air, but I would if I could. A sneak-peak at DoDonPachi 3 would be nice...
Regus- As great as I look, I'll take your advice and stay off camera. After all, I don't want to get jumped in the street when folks find out I own Metal Slug 3.
I won't add codes or cheats people could find easily on the internet. This will be strictly import coverage.
Mman- My friend knows more about the editing than I do, so I'm not sure how it'll be done.

Cover as obscure games as you can get, as long as they're good. How you do it doesn't matter so much from my perspective. I would want to hear about games I've never heard of or ones I know very little about.
Just found out the show's going to be an hour long. That's a lot of time to fill...
If I cover classic games, how 'classic' should I get? NES stuff maybe?

You should do one episode as "A Tribute to the Dreamcast- One Of The Greatest Consoles Of All Time". Make sure to cover Mark of the Wolves and some of the best lesser known games released for the DC in the U.S.( as well as imports, of course).
Well, let me just say how I would go about making a show...
No crap script. No one wants to hear lame shit (ex: anything heard of Gamespot) every time the hosts open their mouths... Make it simple and to the point...
Reviews? Sure, that would be cool... but if you used numbers.... Well, don't. GG! (and others) have shown me numbers are to be avoided.
Lots of footage!
No crap code related ANYTHING. (That's a given, though.)
Keep focused on obscure stuff... Don't throw in any recent happenings news in there!

maybe this is alittle on the obvious side but show the coolest footage from the games as you can, and make the editing fast.
The coolest thing I ever saw on extended play was their footage of Treasure's 'Sin & Punishment' for the N64. Just from watching their footage I wanted to play that game, such godly cool ideas...the guy stood on a platform striking a pose the whole time blasting down planes with one hand while a look at the background told you that the platform he was standing on was doing a spinning barral roll...cool as hell
Try to give all games equal coverage. I hate how some games are good, but generally ignore by the bigger magazines in favor of multiple Tekken or Virtua Fighter covers. Tips N' Tricks does their coverage the right way. They cover the blockbuster games, but also do strategy guides for the lesser known games, and that's what I respect them for.
I can give you the "extended" footage as well. I also have some clippage from some games not yet on the site...
Hopefully I'll have some Guilty Gear XX in action really soon.

I'm in your corner Kaneda. If you need anything at all be sure to let me know. If you want to go all DDP crazy, I have Donpachi and DDP2 you could snatch some footage from. Combine with the DDP3 footage from Symphony and voila, you've covered all bases. Just a thought.
