Maybe Electronic Arts can make up something with original content and not have it turn out as Ty the Tasmanian Tiger or Freedom Fighters. Everything else is either a series that bought from another company, or based on a real world license or event. If you ask me thats pretty shitty, considering they used to make really original stuff way back when. Now they just buy their ideas from other people.

Does EA actually think they are doing good for the industry by buying shareholder stock in Ubisoft? I just don't get it.

The acquisitions of Rare and Bungie have produced Goldeneye and Halo 2, two of the most popular and entertaining console games of the last two generations. I don't see how that hurt games in any way other than maybe dumbing down FPSes for consoles.
I have a problem with this because of the potential of a homogenized game development pipeline.
EA's process is to build very highly-polished, accessible games. The results speak for themselves - they make some amazing titles (Sims 2, Battle for Middle Earth, SSX3) but a lot of middling ones that lack inspiration and look like they just came off an assembly line (Rogue Agent, Urbz, that stupid LOTR RPG). We need other developers with different mindsets to fill in the gaps that EA cant touch. EA will never make a game like War of the Monsters or ICO or Warcraft 3. Its just not how they work.
Its kinda like the food industry - yea, In and Out and all that have their place but we need local pizza joints and classy restaurants too.
Vivendi owns Blizzard and Valve but that didn't stop them from making new, excellent titles in their franchises. The actual purchase of a company doesn't affect anything directly except for how much money those games make and for whom.
Every company on the planet is guilty of making assembly line shit. Nintendo does it now without having to answer to anyone.
