Chappelle's Show Season 3 and dvd of Season 2 delayed

The upcoming third season of Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show is apparently only half-baked.

Work on the hugely anticipated new season of Dave Chappelle's sketch show is behind schedule due to its 31-year-old ringleader's illness and lack of new material from his writing staff, according to the New York Post.

The new season was supposed to premiere Feb. 16. It will now begin airing sometime in late April or May, per the Post.

"Dave--and his entire production crew for that matter--got a bit of a late start on writing season three," network spokeman Tony Fox told the newspaper.

Chappelle has reportedly been laid up with a nasty flu bug, adding to delays brought on by the lack of written material so far for season three. The Emmy-nominated comedy is currently on hiatus for the holidays and will resume production in January.

Last week, Paramount pushed back the season 2 DVD release--which had been slated to hit stores Feb. 8 to coincide with the new TV season--presumably due to the production slowdown. No new release date for the DVD has been set yet.

There was no immediate comment Monday from Comedy Central or Chappelle's publicist.

Since the offbeat sketch show debuted in January 2003, it has steadily built a large following. By the end of season two, the half-hour show was often pulling in more than 3 million viewers. The DVD release of season one currently ranks as the all-time top-selling TV show on DVD.

In August, Chappelle reupped with Comedy Central in a massive two-year deal, valued at $50 million by the Hollywood Reporter. The deal also set a new Industry precedent--reportedly giving the funnyman a large cut of backend DVD sales.

In addition to his gig at Comedy Central, Chappelle had been working on a book for Hyperion. No word on the book's status; there's also no word on the rumored movie deal with Paramount for Chappelle to portray Rick James in a biopic.

Prior to work on his new TV season, Chappelle had been overseeing a feature film/DVD project combining sketch comedy with footage from a Brooklyn block party filmed in September that featured a reunited Fugees. A 10-person crew, directed by Michel Gondry, captured the Chappelle-conceived event.

This totally sucks but I just hope when season 3 hits that it can top season 2.

I was watching conan i belive, and Jimmie Foxx was telling a story about rick James, that sounded almost exactly like one told on chapelle. That sucks! They could have released it on its original release date. Then when season 3 started they could have bundled season 1 and 2 together and rereleased it.

Sounds like no season 3 until at least may.

How the hell can they have a lack of material? Its a sketch show, you just have to make fun of things that are happening in real life to celebritys and shit. They managed to do that quite well the first two seasons, I can't belive they are having troubles this season.

It's a one man sketch show. You can do only so much unless they dress him in drag.

I loved the first season, but when I think about it, I don't think I've seen a single episode from season 2(no cable). So are they any good? If they're on the same level as the first season, I'll definitely be picking up this DVD.

The Wayne Brady episode was incredible.

There's also the Rick James episode which thanks to pop culture has been totally played out.

Actually, new SNLs are pretty funny. They added that guy from Goodburger and he's added a lot of life to the show. It's not as good as Chappelle's Show by any means but its better than it was when Will Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon were the top guys.

The late ABC news last night was mentioning that Comedy Central was pissed at the possible breach of contract and that the show may be canceled.

Funny thing, my roommate and I were just talking about how Dave probably had some kind of massive anxiety attack or something. Watching Season 1 episodes where he talks about how he is going to be cancelled in every episode makes me think that he never intened his show to get as huge as it is now.

It fucking sucks ass that this has been delayed AGAIN. I have a feeling that something major is going on behind the scenes. I mean come on! "Dave has been ill, so we delayed the season for 8 months"?!

He complained of "exhaustion" recently and took time off. Kinda weird considering that Chappelle's seasons are only 10 episodes when others manage to pull off 26 episode seasons on time year after year.

Guess some people don't handle success as well as others.

diff, I've caught in regularly for the past few years, and while it's better than it was during the God awful start of the millenium (and beyond), it's still not as good as it was during the early '90s, although it is much improved.

one of the many porn shops in NYC along 8th Ave., that also sell legit dvds on the side, is selling the 2nd season set. for $37. would've picked it up with the current state of shit now, but i'm fucking broke at the moment. i love NYC and these dvd stores that break street dates on everything.

Everybody sparked to his plan and signed their megabuck contracts -- except Tucker, the lone "Rush Hour" participant who was in no rush. He has in fact been so elusive that Ratner had begun talks to direct a "Creature of the Black Lagoon" remake at Universal.

After getting under $2 million for the original, Tucker increased his salary tenfold for the sequel, released in 2001. The original grossed $144 million domestically and $247 million worldwide, while the sequel grossed $226 million domestically and $329 million worldwide.

Rather than look for more big paydays, the Atlanta-based Tucker has steadily turned down every film offered him. He has chosen to busy himself instead with pursuits that range from standup comedy to standing up for his pal Michael Jackson through the singer's court battle. He has also traveled the globe, hung with Bono and President Bill Clinton in Africa, and has become a favored houseguest of Jordan's King Abdullah.

New Line production president Toby Emmerich agreed long ago to make a second $20 million-against-20% payday commitment to Tucker, thinking it might lead to another screen turn. Tucker has toyed with the idea of sequelizing another Ratner-directed comedy, "Money Talks."

When the network puts $40 million worth of pressure on you to perform, that IS stress. When you can't walk out on the street without 100 assholes running up to you and acting like they know you and shit, that is not so much fun either.

Season 2 was too damn funny, just give me that DVD and it doesn't matter if Dave comes back for more. It sucks that Season 3 has been indefinitely delayed, but the DVD is DONE, wtf.

At any rate, I don't have anything against Chapelle personally - I like his show (though I could never watch it on TV where commercials had practically a 1:1 ratio with the content) - just celebrity as a whole.

Like I said the guy went from Jim Bruer-level to Richard Pryor-level in the span of like, a week. His popularity literally fucking exploded through the roof after the Rick James skit, and his show went from being one of Comedy Central's better shows (popularity wise) to being its great hope.

Thats not easy to deal with, and I doubt he thought it would happen. Ive been a fan of his for years now and he seems like a good guy but I can see why he would go mental after all of it.

I honestly cant. That's why I'm starting to think this problem he has now has nothing to do with the Chapelle Show or his career. I think something else is going down with him.
