If you mean that "hardcore" gamers don't have much control, that's true for any industry. What the hardest-core niche wants is usually something the rest of the planet (a) doesn't care about; (b) won't spend the extra money on; or (c) doens't even know about. Even then, I believe we are actually fortunate since videogames are the kind of commodity that will allow for considerable variety, including plenty of niche products. Bear in mind that it aslo works both ways: large, powerful developers are often the catalyst to getting niche games, or games from smaller developers, to the consumers -- Steel Battalion and Riddick come to mind, and I'm sure there are plenty of examples on other platforms.
