Wow, thats pretty awful.
"in 40 years"
We still win then. You had me worried for a sec. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Friday_Earthquake
damn.. earthquake then tidalwaves. How frightening. Thats in the "ring of fire" area so I suppose thats the risk in living there but thats an awful tragedy.

I'm going by Associated press junkets with death tolls, so the 700 is behind you Astro, but I don't doubt we'll reach 5000 by tomorrow.
Ah, I got mine from Sky News/BBC. This is really one of the worst disasters ever, not only because of the sheer number of people that died, but the fact most of the people that live on the coasts of these countries are generally the poorest (living around where they can fish or run tourist shops). The fact it happened on Boxing Day is not really of importance since almost all of those countries are muslim, buddhist, hindu or animist/ancestor worship. They still have no idea about the Maldives and practically all of the country is _just_ above sea level.Quote:

...4,100...:(
fox news channel just stated 8700 and rising
This makes me very sad.
At 10,000 now and rising.
gdamn fucking shit - thats insane - seeing the news reports now.. I cannot believe new land mass was formed or surfaced, that boggles my mind. Damn I just heard over 8000 presumed dead... this is nuts.
BBC Death Tolls:
Sri Lanka: 3,225 dead
Indonesia: 2,200 dead
India: 2,000 dead
Thailand: 257 dead
Malaysia: 28 dead
Maldives: 10 dead
Bangladesh: 2 dead
Drudge is reporting that the Quake was so huge that its done something to the Earth's Rotation.
No joke, look for it, www.drudgereport.com
I did look. The headline leads to a story that has nothing to do w/ the earths rotation.Quote:

Its interesting this - because wasn't this the same time last year when that earthquake in Iran killed 30,000 ppl - like some biblical attack this stuff.
it was basically just one sentance in the article with no further explanation. Some italian guy said it.
Well shit. Then its got to be true.Quote:

you're a cock.
Around the time that this earthquake happened we were watching "The Day After Tomorrow".
I take full responsibility for these events. D:
Death toll now 11,000+.
Magntude: 9.0
This is some seriously screwed up shit. All those people either missing or dead.
This is also kinda scary because California sits right on the edge of the Ring of Fire.
This is definately sad news, as soon as I heard about it on the news I knew that a lot of poorer people living towards the cost were going to get the worst of it. Now in the most effected area of Indonesia, the government there does not allow aid because of a high level of rebel activity there so some of these people may not even be allowed to recieve help.
is it too early to say "PWNED"?

Why is it that whenever something bad happens somewhere in the world, all the whiney twats on this forum think the world is ending? Do they honestly think that in the past, this world was some sort of utopian paradise? Get a fucking grip.

I wouldn't be too worried about it; if there's anything that the people of India & Outlying Areas know how to do, it's overpopulate.

Hell, it hasn't caused us any problems fighting wars and such. So please stop being so naive as to believe loss of human life instantly justifies sympathy, maybe in Europeon countries, but not in this one.
I guess no American would really give a shit unless the waves were sweeping their family members or computers downstream.
It's a natural disaster. People shouldn't build cities in earthquake zones, on active volcanoes, etc. and not expect them to be destroyed eventually. "It's unfortunate" is the best I can muster.Quote:

I agree; everybody should leave Tokyo and Los Angeles right now. That's a seriously retarded thing to say, it's like saying people shouldn't be poor and expect a good life, it's true, but it doesn't make it any less tragic. You don't decide where you are born and how much money your parents have.Quote:

Like this lovely place. Who would choose to live here?
It wasnt so much because of the earthquake, it was because of the tsunami that formed after the earthquake. Its a freak occurrence, theres not a whole lot that anyone can do about it, it probably could happen in Los Angeles. But if it did, and I got swept away, I wouldnt expect some dumb asswipe in Sri Lanka to go on a message board and fake-fake some sympathy. Because that shit aint gonna save anybody's life.
Thats good. I dont. But I do do other stuff. Which leads me to...Quote:

Death-toll is up above 50,000 now and is expected to hit 100,000 in the initial death-toll, disease and other tragedy expected to strike later. I guess all I can say is "sucks for those people", hopefully the after-affects arn't too bad.

I never doubted you did stuff for your community either (your school work when you mention it has always seemed politically inclined).
However I come from a slightly different line of thinking, a human life is a human life, and a tragedy is a tragedy. The thought process of better us then them, usually grabs you by the hand and takes you down one road.
Us, cause we are next.
So what are you doing to help the people in this disaster?Quote:

Relative to other recent natural disasters, maybe.
Jeremy, look deep inside yourself and ask yourself "Do I really care? Do I really feel sad like somebody close to me just died?" Honestly, do you really care? I mean it's a little disheartining to hear about the whole thing but what impact does it have on your life? I'm not saying that the whole ordeal wasn't a horrible event but do you really care what happened to a bunch of people who arn't connected with you in anyway? It's a sad thing that happened, but like I said, it has nothing to do with me. What use is it feeling bad about a bunch of people I didn't know?Quote:

Gohron, yes, I do care. We're all citizens of the world, and it's easy to imagine how I'd feel if my entire family had been wiped out by a tragedy like this. I probably should have said "good" instead of massive, but I'm assuming that there will be many more deaths announced. I wouldn't be shocked if a 100,000 death toll was reached.
so you dont feel like helping because you dont agree with the philosophy? I have read your other stuff, so i know thats probably not how you meant to put it, but that sounds really petty, but if it is how you meant to put it..wow.Quote:

so you have donated your money and time to help in rwanda then? Theres a lot of things going horribly wrong in the world, im gald youa re there to pick up the pieces. I myself do what i can and try to give to the church charites that are going to the problem spots(since they really have a longer history of helping in these kind of situations then most other charities i know, so i know th money will go to the right place, unlike a lot of the charities that have popped up). but i really admire your global worldview that allows you to help in every one of those situations. If this comes of as trolling, fuck it, people of "certain political affiliations" care just as much as those of the left, we are just evidently less smug and self righteous about it. People do what they can, but you cant save everyone and you sure as hell cant sincerely "care" about a bunch of people you have never seen and would not know if you fell over them. I can care in a general sense but honestly, to sincerely say that each and every death caused in every disaster is going to be a deep and personal tragedy, that not a sincere statement, anymore than i expect a masai tibesman to feel a deep and crippling loss about 9/11. Its fucked up that we let self righteous political nonsense into this thread, it was a major tragedy, and hopefully people will do what they can, but no money will bring them back, nor will it undo a cent of the damage, people will have to rebuild and hopefully our donations will help, but realistically, im not a carpainter, not adoctor, and not a civil engineer, ill give money, pray for them, but beyond that, reality is a sad herd thing.Quote:

Nah, it wasn't really the philosophy. It was the constant questioning of my beliefs by the "others", who were hostile to the fact somebody who is a rabid secularist could share a similar moral outlook. They expected I was in their as some sort of spy to sabotage their efforts, it was demoralising. But the straw that broke the camel's back was when I saw this church bitch try to teach a mentally retarded Muslim boy the greatness of Jesus and the heresy of the Quran. That shit didn't sit with me well.Quote:

I'm not saying start a charity, or even donate money, I'm just saying, if you truly don't give a shit, enough respect to shut your mouth and move away from the people who do.
i can respect that, its quite different from what you were saying before. i really dont take diff that seriously when he does the too cool to care bit, i have a feeling he does care, but just dosent throw it round as much, and is dissatisfied with the histrionics of some of the preofessional "carers" that tend to be fond of caring for just about everything, so long as a camera is on them, many stars come to mind on this one, it all coems off as phony, I get the feeling thats where he is comign from. One sad thing is that when it happens here, i dont see us getting help, even with how much we have done and given(we had outdonated the eu by 4 times before the un "stingy" comment incident, and since then we have gone on to pledge more), i doubt a lot of our "friends" in europe or canada or aus will do anything, asia might, but even that i doubt.Quote:
