With the introduction of the new Gameboy, DS, PSP, and improved cell phone games ... sales of portable games (and thier respective platforms) eclipse console games in the next generation.
Agree or Disagree?
It has happened in Japan, why not here? The timing seems right with these units, and the lack of excitement for a new generation in console games.
I dont see it happening, most people here are too thick to know how to use a pda properly or set a digital watch..
Japanese people are much more gadget friendly... and hand helds have been seen as kiddy gadgets...
I'm still more excited about the next generation of consoles than the next (and current I suppose) generation of handhelds. But I'm also not so foolish as to believe that I embody the average consumer, who will no doubt go into their purchases with a different mindset than I do.
I do have a strong feeling that the DS will fall to the PSP and the Revolution will fall to both the Xenon and the PS3. If that happens, it will interesting to see what Nintendo's next move will be.
Nintendo will go on to be a popular and profitable niche 3rd party.
Cell phone games and sales shouldn't count as real portable gaming, and nothing i've seen leads me to believe that's going to change any time soon (for this coming product cycle at least). So I don't bellieve it will come close at all, home consoles will continue to be the premier market in the industry.
I reckon portable gaming will overtake home gaming eventually, like console gaming overtook the arcades. In terms of portability and ease of use, arcade < consoles < portables. Though you actually own consoles and portables instead of feeding them money so maybe I'm wrong there.
I dunno, maybe if cell phone gaming really takes off, but PSP and DS won't do much to wrest the title from consoles. America's not safe enough for people to justify brandishing a $150+ piece of electronics in public.

Zerodash, Nintendo's got TONS of money left, they won't be a third party until they're broke. Also, EvilMog, tell that to my collection of great GBA games like Mega Man and Bass, Mega Man Zero 2, and Sonic Advance.
Mobile gaming on phones is getting pretty big. The US market is currently estimated to be $250 MM. Remember that it's not just gamers buying games for their phones, there are alot of moms and dads buying card games, family feud, etc. so the potential size of market is substantial. For those that say they won't be able to figure it out, a game can be selected and downloaded in less than 2 minutes.Quote:
