I just recently bought a DVD-R drive and was wondering how to create custom DVD's. What I mean by this is, how do you turn a Windows Media File (.avi .mpeg) into a file that can be read in a normal non-computer dvd player? Any help would be appreciated.
I'm still starting out with DVD burning (my computer is giving me shit with it, I'm going to try different media to see if that's the problem next) but here's what I know.
Gotta convert the file (xvid, divx, mpeg, avi, whatever) into the format that DVD players like. The last one I did was a xvid file and I used a program called D.I.K.O to convert it. There are tutorials all over the net that gives step by step instructions on what options to turn on and what it all does. The bigger the file, (and the slower your computer) the longer it will take to convert the file. I did a 55 minute video in about an hour and 10 minutes.
After it's converted ya burn it. Simpliest way I found is just using Nero. Just plop the converte video files into the video folder and let 'er rip. BUT, that just burns it to the disc. You put it in a DVD player and off it goes. No menus, no chapter stops. I think Nero can do that too, but there is (of course) a shit load of software out there that does the menu options. Adobe has a whole line of software that works together for dvd authoring (one prog to convert, one makes menues, one burns, ect).
If you've got Nero, you can get a dvd video plugin that'll transcode the videos into a dvd on the fly. And you can set different crap like chapters, menus, etc. etc. etc.
I think WinAVI is supposed to be a decent all-purpose MPEG encoder. It can change all sorts of files into standard DVD format. http://www.videohelp.com (formerly vcdhelp.com) has tons of information on this kinda stuff. I'm using Nero as well, I went and downloaded the latest update, and now when I try to burn a DVD, halfway through my pc shuts down.
So I guess I'm no help...
Anyone have a good alternative to Nero?
I use Canopus Procoder for my encodes then TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 to do the DVD.
I have the most up to date Nero. I have a mpeg movie that is more than 700MB to fit onto a CD (VCD) so I want to put it onto DVD. What options do I choose to put the movie onto DVD and will allow me to play it on any DVD player and will automatically play?
I've been having problems with it trying to convert the files like that and it just acts like it sits on it forever after some point. Heck I've even left what should have been an hour last well into the morning (after getting up) to see that it's still in the process and hasn't really gone anywhere.Quote:

Nero Has worked the best for me, haven't run into any problems with it converting any movie file into DVD format and then burning it
I think sony's SOnic Program does it
and theres just a ton of other DVD authoring programs Im sure if you type those 3 words into google you'll get hundreds if not thousands of hits and be able to find something
