Someone needs to teach you how to use the internets.

It is easy to gauge maturity and parenting potential in young women. If they are smart enough to wait until after they've graduated high school, maybe even got a job or gone on to college, then they have displayed the understanding needed to successful deal with parenting.

If you're dumb enough to think the majority of young mothers PLANNED on having a child at 16, you're hopeless.

Well, then, before that you set up a gov't program that mandates intelligence ranks and assigns cards displaying that rank to every member of the populace. For every descending level, you are afforded less rights; most notably that of voting.

Barring that, require voters to take and pass a basic test on the key stances of the candidates/ key points of bills & laws in elections before they can vote.

While I think that income is definitely important in raising a child, I think patience is much more important. And someone who isn't even eighteen, or is only a few years past eighteen, I don't see them having the patience to deal with raising a child. Why do you think so many women get mad when people criticize day care? There was an miniature uproar over a frequently occurring character in movies nowadays: the mother who leaves the kids with the nanny to go to the spa, because when does she get to have a life? (EDIT: Answer - She doesn't, she had a kid.) The furor is caused because that stuff hits WAY too close to home. These are people who were not ready to have kids and either weren't done growing up (e.g. leaving baby with Mom & Dad while they go to the club and get crunk) or treat the child as an accessory. And that's not fair to the child. And I'm no expert, but I surely wasn't surprised that these children are more likely to be miscreants. Plus, I know more than plenty of lower class mothers and fathers raising kids who are well-behaved and adjusted, just poor, so it can't be all bad for the kid.

My parents didn't have a lot of money when they had me, but at that point they already had signed a mortgage, closed on a home, leased cars, and were doing the same things for their careers as they are doing now. My father had served four years in Vietnam and come back already and my mother essentially raised her brothers and sisters while her parents were at work. I think they were both mature. How often does that happen now with young mothers (I mention them because usually the father of the child disappears)?

I understand and agree with you: I think you should be financially secure before having children. I don't think support should come from your Mom & Dad, just because you don't have a bank account or a career. In the example I listed first, from that radio show, the 17 year-old's first answer to everything was, "I don't know," before offering a guess. I hope her child turns out alright. But she's the norm for young mothers. At least the father is sticking around.

A shitty upbringing is one where you're raised by everyone but your parents, ala the stupid Hillary-vision where it takes a village to raise a child. No it doesn't. It takes a mother figure and a father figure.

In most cases, yes, I think "shitty" means the mother is young and immature. Does that mean 27 year-olds always raise their kids properly? No. Does it mean that a 15 year-old mother is doomed to have a cell-dweller for a child? No. There are exceptions, but think of it this way: If some guy jumps off the Verrazano bridge and lives, does that mean everyone should do it?

Do you think my original example is fit to raise a child? She's the norm.

I think Lhadatt was being silly, man. :)

I don't think that committing an irresponsible act (banging some chick without a condom) negates the ability to fix it with a responsible act (day-after pill, abortion, adoption). I think epmode said it already, but someone who would use those options if they're available is not yet fit to have kids.

I was a mistake, an illegitimate child. My dad was a drug addict, we never had much money. I turned out fine, I don't commit crimes, I have strong morales and a very persevering personality. I guess this doesn't apply in every case but bad parents don't make bad kids.

Once you realize that Republicans (the majority) just pay lip service to them (christian conservatives), then you should be able to sleep easier. They have to toe the line, because if they don't openly support the anti-abortion crowd, they will lose them to a third party ... and if they fully support the anti-abortion crowd, they will alienate even more of thier base.
