There's more in the article, you should read the whole thing for full context, but those are the important bits. Kutaragi says quite clearly that it's more important for the PSP to look good than play well. The sad thing is that he knows better.

As long as it looks cool the PSP UMD disc could be flying out anywhere. The buttons could all be smashed, the screen could pop off and people would still buy it in droves.

I read a few reviews for the PSP, and every one mentions how shoddily designed this thing is. No doubt it'll have some great games, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna take mine out of the house. I'm sure that one good drop will be all it takes to ruin it.

Kutaragi is basically admitting that a system he helped design is being released with glaring design flaws. And comparing the PSP to a building is just plain retarded.

The system would have been 1/2 inch bigger if they moved the button to the right, off the edge of the screen.

Why would that have been a big deal? I'm confused...

It doesn't make any damn sense to engineer a product with a flaw that could have been easily fixed.

I knew this thing would have some hardware problems at launch, and I seriously hoped that it wouldn't too, cause I really want one that doesn't need a weapon's permit to carry outdoors.

I'd actually say 1989-90 is probably closest. They're coming off an almost unbeatable marketshare high, they're allowing serious competition to reach market first and they're generally making life hell for 3rd party publishers. Sounds more like NES era Nintendo than SNES era Nintendo imo.

Here's the way I was thinking about it, and it is pretty close to yours. The PlayStation had no real competition. It smashed everything around it, just like the NES did. Then the 16-bit generation came along, and Nintendo's marketshare got chopped heavily by the Genesis, just like the PS2's has. Now, Sony is entering their equivalent of the N64 generation. The competition will be out first, and they are in real danger of losing badly, unlike any time before. To summarize:

NES = PS1
SNES = PS2
N64 = PS3?

Anyone remember the first mock-up Minidisc decks? They WERE SMALLER THAN THE DISC THEMSELVES. When the product finaly shipped, they were much much larger, becuase they could just not pull it off.

How about the PSX? How many features were stripped out simply becuase they bit off more than they could chew?

Sounds reasonable, though it's worth noting that Sony actually hasn't lost any marketshare in the move from PS1 to PS2 (both hold around 70%). While N64 is generally looked down upon in gaming circles, it sold absurdly well in America (outselling SNES here even) and managed about 30% marketshare worldwide. By comparison, Xbox and GameCube combnined are only about 30% of the market.

I have this feeling that Xenon will turn out to be the next "Genesis". PS3 will probaly stay on top (like SNES, thanks mainly thanks to that 20 million Japan base) but Sony's in for a humbling I think.

The worst part is that a lot of the time, the design's not even that good in the first place. The only PS design that looks very good is the PSone. PSP looks pretty good, but it's not a good design in the context of it being a portable gaming system.

'Course, it hasn't mattered, since the competitors' designs have sucked just as badly in most cases. Someone should employ Apple to make the outer design of their console.

I actually really like the gamecube, except that it's a bit too tall in conjunction with the pop-lid to fit in shelf cabinets.

I agree that the Gamecube has the best design of all the current systems, although I don't have a problem with the looks of any of them. I like how they all have black shells so they look nice next to my stereo and TV.

The PSP is a Game Gear for the new generation.

I don't see how that would ever happen. It's never been done before with Sony products, so I don't see how it's viable.

For what it's worth, the import system I spent time with was solid.

The screen is so much more beautiful than you think it is.

If anything, I'll wait until the first wave of systems is sold out within a day and restocked months later to get one. More games will be out by then anyway. The DS comes first, though.

When the USA DS launched, it had very few techncial problems (like Dead pixels), BUT Nintendo offered (and is still offering) to replace any DS with a defect like that for FREE. Good move.

When the USA PSP launches, you KNOW there are going to be at least SOME technical problems with it (even if its not as much as a travesty as the Japanese PSP launch..), so how do you think Sony will react to those defects?

You think they'll replace any USA PSP with a couple dead pixels for FREE? How about one with the defective Square button? How about one with a defective Right segment of the D-pad? (this part of the dpad is said thave the SAME problem as the Square button , on the other side of the PSP's screen)

I'm not having any fun with my DS, thats for sure. I need to sell it quickly before PSP comes out.

DiffX- One big problem with that scenario. Sony can't make enough systems and they'll all be sold out. This isn't speculation on what might happen, it's a simple fact. Sure, I can hold my store to either their return policy or warranty, but the problem I'm looking at is that if I have to use either I'm in for a wait while they restock. I admit I've got an advantage in that I work at the store, and so can make sure that when a system comes in I can replace mine, but many people will be at the mercy of stores that just can't be bothered to take care of them. It's going to be creating some negative publicity for Sony.

Like they need any more people annoyed at them for their hardware reliability issues...

I have no idea who this guy is and don't care about what he said. I mean, he's right in a way. It's something you'll adapt too and it isn't the end of the world. He's wrong, however, about the blueprint and architect example. If an architect puts the door in the wrong spot the contractor or designer of the house will probably tell him what's wrong and why he should change it somewhere down the line of the building process.

Um ok firstly, its more like (so far..) Slightly ABOVE n64 graphics vs Not quite as good as PS2 graphics...

Yes currently the PSP has better graphics than the DS, BUT graphics do NOT = better games, GOOD gameplay/more FUN = better games.

And since most of the PSPs AND DSs games arent out yet (heck DS has been out for only like 2 months in the uS...), I think we should judge the gameplay/fun of the games when they DO come out..

It is quite possible for a graphically lesser game (on DS) to have better gameplay/be more fun than a graphically superior game (on PSP). (thats not even including the alternate control methods the DS offers (that te PSP does not) which could obviously greatly affect gameplay: Touchscreen w/ pen stylus, touch screen w/ thumb stylus, and microphone)

A True gamer doesn't "roll your eyes and laugh" at ANY system because it has lesser graphics. a Graphics whore DOES (while ignoring gameplay).

Oh as for great third party games/support on PSP, Im sure they'll have a lot of support, but so does the DS... ;)

Your whole argument here sounds like the video game version of the old excuse, "She might not be much to look at, but she's got a great personality." Too bad most of the DS games that have been released so far are lousy, so that argument doesn't even work here.

I've already played Ridge Racers on PSP. That game alone looks, sounds, and plays better than any of the piddling few pieces of software that are out for the DS now.

Why give up great visuals for the sake of great gameplay, when you can have it all with the PSP?

I own a DS and have put some time into a PSP.

I can honestly say the average person is going to be blown away by the gap between the 2 systems.

And like I said before... if you think that Sony doesn't have great software lined up for their system, you're ignorant.

Or better yet buy a PS2( thatys cheaper) and buy RR for 20 bucks. Say what you want about the DS games ,but you can't play games like Wario Ware touch or Feel the Magic on a PSP or any console.

I don't really care about ports unless it form the current generation. Porting SMB64 was okay becuase the game was like 6 years old ,but PS2 RR is fairly new if you compare it to SMB64 or RRDS

Also this thread was about the PSP design flaws. Leave it to Mzo and Diff to turn all the attention form the shitty hardware deign to the lackluster line-up that is still better than the DS's launch line-up.

None of them are over the Xbox vs. PS2 arguement, so why would they be over the new and fresh DS vs. PSP one? They wouldn't, that's why.

What's to argue? X-Box is more powerful with a far better online setup, PS2 has the library depth to counter.

The sad thing is I know these are the facts people throw at each other over and over again, as if one overcomes the other. I'm just ignoring it in hopes that maybe it'll get better one day, that people will be able to enjoy their system(s) of choice without feeling threatened by the existence of other consoles. I'm a dreamer, I know.
