By Shmup, I mean 2D, overhead view autoscrolling shooter that comes close to the glory that is Radiant Silvergun.
I think the closest I ever got to that glory was Mars Matrix... but I'd like to know if I may have missed anything.

Mars Matrix is grand.... But there is also something about Gunbird 2... It is hardly anything special... but there is something that gets ahold of you and won't let you stop trying for new highs...
I don't like Giga Wing too much and have yet to pick up 2....
Well, I would also go with Mars Matrix as my first choice :) Greatly challenging game.
I also enjoy Gunbird 2 and both Gigas.
Never played Zero Gunner 2, so cant comment on that.
Mars Matrix is my favorite because of the huge bosses and pure insanity of the last few levels. The shop mode and the tutorials that show you how to beat the levels were also cool additions to the shooter genre.
Gunbird 2 is decent fun due to the whack-ass storylines, but if you have the import version it becmoes a lot more fun because the "cut-scenes" (If you can even call them that) are not edited. I hate seing a black screen when there could be sweaty man on man action going on.....;)
Giga Wing 2, just barely edging out Mars Matrix.
The outstanding musical score pushes it over the top.
Gunbird 2. Sorry I'm just not a fan of shmups that use the reflective shield.
Ikaruga :D Oh, you mean shooters I've actually played... :p
Seriously, Mars Matrix.
Tie between GW2 (for the soundtrack and aircraft design) and ZG2 (360-degree movement is really fun, choppers rule, and it's the closest thing so far to a console sequel to Strikers 1945 II).
I am sooo glad the voices were left out of the US release of GW2.
GB2 is too silly for me, and Mars Matrix too technical.
This may all change if Ikaruga appears, however...
My vote goes to Mars Matrix, also.
Ikaru......
*runs off crying*
Another vote for import Gigawing 2. Believe me, having the voices in there makes a difference, as it makes the experience that much more fun. RIFUREKUTOOOOO REIZAAAAAAAA!!!!!
As many people said, GW2 has an awesome soundtrack. That combined with pretty graphics, several different ships and 2 different ways to play (Reflect Laser or Reflect Force) round things out.
Mars Matrix may have the unlocking gameplay down pat, but GW2 is just more fun IMO.
There's plenty to unlock and discover in GW2 -- It just isn't presented in such a clear and straight-forward fashion as Mars Matrix.
Giga Wing 2 is a completely different game when you're going for scores. I felt indifferent about it until I focused on scoring, but once I did it took over my life. The past few weeks have been nothing but GW2.
And actually, I'm not a fan of GW2's soundtrack. Once you notice that the levels just repeat the same few lines, it gets on your nerves.
Tough question...
I guess I've got to go with Giga Wing 2.
GHRAAAAAVITY BOOOOOMBAAAHH!!!!!
The only schmup of this type I have is Gunbird 2, unless Cannon Spike counts...
Bystander, you are an ass. The theory holds true.
Mars Matrix.
uhm, Soukygurentai:D
no seriously, on the Dreamcast, the import GigaWing (thats the one i got), not 2, the 1st one....its hard to describe, but it just has a much more "solid" feel to it than Mars Matrix or GW2.
its a pure point racker game. reminds me of a Saturn shmup.
to anybody that hasnt tried it because of the lackluster graphics, give it a try, i bet you'll like it better than the flashy (and a lil to easy) sequel.......
In order:
1. Mars Matrix
2. Zero Gunner 2
3. Giga Wing 1 (a very pleasant surprise)
4. Giga Wing 2
5. Gunbird 2
6. Twinkle Star Sprites
*-neo
Mars Matrix or import Gunbird 2, Mars Matrix or Gunbird 2 ... I ...can't...decide... It's a tie, i can't choose between the two.
My definite second favorite is Zero Gunner 2.
Twinkle Star Sprites is pretty addicting and Bangai-O freakin' rules, but I don't really consider those as straight up shooters.
Another vote for Mars Matrix here. I don't think it's spectacular like others do but there isn't much competition on the DC.
Please explain how having an opinion makes him an "ass".Quote:

Or better yet, don't. The post speaks for itself.
Giga Wing 2 is MUCH better than Giga Wing 1. Just thought you'd might like to know that. I didn't care for GW1 that much either.Quote:

Mars Matrix.
I voted for Mars Matrix. Is it because you don't like Radiant Silvergun?
Mars Matrix takes it for me, GunBird 2 right up there though.
Ahh it's nice to see that someone thinks of Bangai-O the same way I do. It was a very refreshing change when I first played it (if your gonna shoot stuff it may as well be alot). Bloody hard though, still haven't got to grips with the later levels. As for best traditional shooter, the award goes to.....Mars Matrix (yells "speech, speech")Quote:

either Mars Matrix or Bangai-O...
... but probably Mars Matrix... because of all of the great extras... (which Bangai-O was lacking)
