This game comes out tomorrow. It's been getting good reviews. 8.8 at IGN. 8.5 at Gamespot. I think the game sounds interesting. Anyone picking it up?

Christ, already? These things can't happen, I'm still recovering from the Holiday season.
I thought this was coming out way after Star Wars: Republic Commando.
I have yet to stop playing WoW and start playing anything else...
I'll probably get to this game in the summertime
I want to play this pretty badly. I'll probably be picking it up for the weekend.
The previous EGM came with a DVD that had a pretty in-depth playthrough in early parts of the game. Looked sweet.
Other than Abe's Oddysee, I really don't care about Oddworld's games.
you should care about this one.Quote:

I'm not even sure there are any.
One thing i wondered about was the whole "live ammo" thing. It turns out that you actually need to "hunt" for ammunition, shooting the small animals to knock them out, then picking them up. I'm glad to say that they did a great jorb on this as well. The crossbow works like dual wielding in Halo, which was probably the best way to do it.
In the end, my only (small) gripe was Stranger's voice actor. he does sound a lot like you'd expect, but it all seemed like each of his sentences were pieced together from various sound clips, since he does a lot of mid-sentence pausing.
Gotta get ta town...turn in this bounty...
But in the end, It was a fantastic game, and one of the best on the Xbox. if you have an Xbox and have done nothing with it but play Halo2 for the past three months, you're going to be happy to know there's another good game on the system.
and when I do, it won't be Oddworld shit.Quote:

Although that should only count for half, since a lot of the game was unplayable due to insane rubber-band AI.
So now maybe Lorne Lanning has made 2 good games? It's only been 10 years, he's on a roll.
That's not so bad. Most people in the never make one good game.
My thoughts from Got-next:
Quote:
I picked up Stranger last night. First impressions for me are Game of the Year material. I like it that much. The western style mixed with the Oddworld universe creates a neat, fresh atmosphere that looks really cool.
Graphically, Stranger is top notch Xbox material. Very, very detailed textures. Huge set peices that animate and serve no other purpose than to take up space in the game world and create atmosphere. It's obvious that a LOT of care was takes to create this beautiful game.
One thing that I wasn't sure would work is the transition from 3rd to first person game modes. Exploration can be done in either FPS or 3rd person mode. Shooting must be done in FPS mode. Most people I imagine will prefer to do thier exploring and platforming in 3rd person mode. Thankfully, the transition to FPS mode is silky smooth. One click on the right thumb stick toggles the two modes. The switch is very fast and seemless, allowing you to hunt bad guys full steam ahead, quickly switch to 3rd person, and then back to FPS, all without slowing down the game or affecting the control. It really works perfect.
I've only played the game for a little bit, maybe an hour? But I don't think my opinion will change. Oddworld Stranger is fantastic.
Anyone else?
I still haven't gotten to play it some more. Just started up school again and it's taking all my time.
Don't bring that shit here. It's been tainted.Quote:

Not trying to sound like a dick, but isn't that what EA has always done? Just published other people's games that is.Quote:

I know thats why EA bought it, none the less my statment stands. These days they just buy up already existing games. Burnout 3, TimeSplitters 3, Oddworld, Command and Conquer (few years ago), etc. Now they are trying to buy up Ubisoft so they can get their hands on Splinter Cell.Quote:

My question is does it have the puzzle aspect of all the other games in the series? Or is it more a pure adventure game?
Yes. In fact, Electronic Arts was probably one of the first computer game companies founded on the premise of being a "publisher" and not strictly a "developer." Most video game and computer game companies in the 1970s and early 1980s developed and published their own games. EA did have some in-house developers, but they were really pushing the whole "publishing" business model.Quote:

Hawkins took a lot of inspiration from the music industry; early EA computer game boxes were very thin and almost square in shape, similar to way records were packaged.
Unfortunately, after several years of success and growth, EA phased out the album-style packaging, and they also stopped showcasing the development teams to the extent that they used to do. These days, as far as EA is concerned, EA is the "star," and not the developers.
I want to play this game...
It looks good, but again, after the holidays the cash flow isn't exactly...flowing. How does that live ammo thing work? Like do the things stop working after a while or do they go bad(MGS3)?
you "catch" your ammo.
It's been getting pretty good scores, I've been thinking about checking it out even if I'm not a fan of the Oddworld games.
That "live ammo" thing is a neat concept too.
You catch "live" ammo. Basically, you see little critters either hopping or flying around. You kill them, pick them up, and use them as ammo. One critter = serveral rounds of ammo, so it's not like you have to kill something for every round of ammo. You have a charged type shot that is unlimited, so you can always kill extra ammo with it if you run out of everything else. This game is really, really good by the way. At first I thought it was just ok, but after the difficulty picked up some, it got really good. I've never seen a game combine the first and third person point of views so well before.
I just made it to the twist.
It's not as big a deal as Halverson said, but it's still pretty cool.
I did not like Munch's Mountain Dew Adventure. I love Halo 2.
Will I enjoy this game?
I didn't like Munchs either, but playing this makes me want to go back and try it again. Maybe there was some entertainment in there that I didn't appreciate back in 2001. I think in a lot of ways that Strangers Wrath is a better single player experience than Halo 2, and it definitely takes a decidely more Halo-ish turn in the second half.
Beat this earlier today. I wish it was longer, but at least they didn't stretch it out, or make you do any lame back tracking.
If you're on the fence about this game, GET OFF OF IT!!! It's really quite good.
And, I had that preorder DVD sitting around for a few weeks and didn't think anything of it, but if you've got it it's definitely worth watching. It's got every cinema from every Oddworld game, plus lots of extras.
I've never heard something so true about EA. It's actually making a lot of fans pissed off by changing the series into what THEY believe is the best. (Well, in Command and Conquer, I figure what they think is the best is indeed the best, but maybe its not so everywhere :))
BTW I'm getting angry about these console releases that leave the PC gamers drooling. Damn console making companies. still, it'll take a long time for you to beat HL2 guys... that's a truth! hehehe
Anybody NOT getting this game b/c of the publisher?
Nope, a good game is a good game no matter who publishes it, and the EA thing isn't that bad on the actual box, it looks horrid in pics though. I'll probably get this with my Gamer's Gift Card coupon in the coming weeks, if I don't spend too much on birthday gifts. Korly, that DVD sounds awesome, and makes Munch's Oddysee completely worthless.
Yeah, thanks to that DVD I got to see the "Bad Ending" of all 3 games, which are all awesome, especially Munchs. Too bad it looks like Stranger only has one ending.
Started playing this today. I really like all of the shit talking the guys in the beginning do.
I remember seeing this game on a videogame doco. it looked sweet.
wtf, another review of a game cover?Quote:

Very useful if you happened to have shot about 5 Fuzzles (picture Tribbles with Downs Syndrome and giant teeth) onto the ground next to the Chippunk -- enemy charges the irritating Chippunk, and then gets bloodily devoured by the crazed Fuzzles. Then there are the Boom Bats...Quote:

okay trying to beat the junkyard boss and he just fills the screen with rockets and kills me. the way gamefaqs says to beat him alive sounds too based on luck. any help?
You can take out the two rocket launchers on the right and left sides, which makes things way easier. I think you have to use bomb bats or whatever they're called to do it Also, if you run to the very back of the area, you should be able to hide from the rockets and refill your health. Other than that, just take of the shield and unload on the guy with everything you have.
you can destroy the rocket launchers!? excellent :)
I just beat this game yesterday and I must say it was excellent. I never played any of the other Oddworld games(10 minutes total combined before this) but after seeing this game in action with Lorne Lanning walking you through some of it on a recent OXM disk I had to try.
It easily is up there for some game of the year action so far(I know the year is early)that's how great this game is. If anyone is seriously sitting on the fence, GET THIS GAME NOW! Without saying too much the "twist" is really cool and adds a lot to an already stellar game.
It really would be ashame if this game goes buy unnoticed. The character is super cool and fresh. The weapons are some of the most creative I've seen in years and they get WAY better as the game goes on. You really are doing yourself a disservice if you don't play this game. The graphics are mind blowing but the only thing I really found wrong with the game is the shadows. They don't seem to follow collision detection as they go right through floors. Besides that A+ effort and I hope there is a sequel.

Regardless, it was definitely a great action game. The architecture/design was amazing, and the game had some of the best effects I've seen. I like how you can be at a high point on the map, zoom in with binoculars about a mile away (another great effect, btw), and see the remains of a crate you broke in the river about 20 minutes ago.
***NOTICE TO ALL ACTION GAME DESIGNERS***
Make sure that every level is selectable -- at least after one beats the game.
i really start to love this game, but then the fact that theres too many boss battles that rely on pure luck, rather than skill pull me away. take for instance the battle i had trouble with earlier. to get the guy down so you can hit him you either have to be lucky enough to have a boombat register and throw him off the stand, or hope he falls off on his own (which he doesnt always do). now im on the fight right after you collect the last bounty (or as Halverson says.....the big turning point) and this battle in the burning room is just absurd. absurdidly based on luck to the point that its very much like the Bloody Malth battle in Ninja Gaiden 1. either your lucky and you kill him or you're not. and its so not even remotely based on your skill. bah.....im putting it down for the moment.
Are you talking about the room where "the secret" is revealed? If so, just use your spin attack and charge attack to knock them into the fire. It was really easy.
yeah thats what i was talking about. i finally beat it, but it still seemed incredibly based on luck. the music when youre in the next main stage (wal mart or whatever its called) is really good.
id love to get one of the art of oddworld books.
Yeah, I dug the music quite a bit. That reminds me, I think they had the whole soundtrack available for download at the official site just recently.
http://www.oddworld.com/stranger/osw_downloads.shtml
yeah cool. didnt check until you mentioned it. didnt the pre-order swag include a cd with all the other oddworld cinemas, or is that an extra in the game?
I don't know. I wish I preordered it but I didn't. I didn't even consider getting this game until the day it was released.
Yeah, it was a DVD. I mentioned it a few posts back.Quote:

in the final countdown part in the dam. tried it 5 times so far and just finally decided to run through it. made it pretty far but you cant ever stop and get stamina, and thus replenish your life bar. another unnecessarily difficult part. singlehandedly ruins the entire experience for me.
It can be a pain. But, like so many timed sections, after you figure out how to do it once, you'll be able to do it almost every time -- assuming you were ever to go back to that section again.Quote:

At the top of the uphill tunnel, you can rest next to those unbreakable boxes before you jump down. Get your bar up to full, making sure you've got about a minute of time left. The last trick is getting by that hovering electro-cannon-tank -- I just waited behind the unbreakable boxes on the bridge for the thing to turn around, then ran like hell (getting hit, mind you) for the last 5 seconds.
yeah i get to that part with the electro ball with like half health (unless the snipers kill me first) and it just zaps me dead. i also have about 20-30 seconds left at that point. guess i suck :) i despise the uphill tunnel because the character model will usually decide to slow down and stop running, so of course then i get beat on and waste more time. the walking to running animation just plain sucks on this game. it never decides to run at the right time.
You can boost into the run with R trigger. Perhaps you knew this already, but there no reason to slow down too much in that uphill tunnel. You'll beat the game today, if you so desire. Good luck.Quote:

If you do it right, you can be running past them as they are getting sucked down the hall.
Single jumps work really well to keep speed up. Don't give up, you are almost done.
thnaks for all the tips guys. i didnt know about the r button trick prince. and joe, i guess i was too much on a running away mode to think of using the skunks. so frustrating but ive made it this far and i hear the ending is great.
I thought the ending was great. Let me know what you think after you beat it.
After reading this thread, my frothing demand for this game has increased exponentially. Since it's only $35 now I may just have to pick it up.
Wow! It already dropped in price? I guess that means it isn't doing too well. That blows.
I thought the ending was OK. Not great, but not disappointing.
it really IS great. like ive posted there are some battle that are unnecessarily difficult, but (and its so rare with me these days) ive pressed on because the atmosphere, art and music are just so good.Quote:

got past the timer part.......another "luck over skill thing" to fight 2 spider guys. one is bad enough but now TWO!? god forbid you get hit once close range. you get locked in the endless "we put waaaay to many animation frames in the game to allow you to move away in a speedy fashion" routiene. fuck that noise but i finally beat it by quucksaving every time i did damage to them. thats shitty game making. and now im confronted with the last boss who shoots through anything and has a homing laser that takes off 80% of your life. wow. the testers really balanced this POS. i refuse to loose a controller to this game.
I didn't find ONE area where it was luck over skill. The 2 squid guys can be a pain but if you get hit go into 1st person view. That way when you get hit it doesn't knock you over and you can hit them with some heavy artillery.
The last boss is no problem at all. Just hide behind the falling rock. After he obliterates it keep on the move until another one drops. The new rock will show up on your radar as a green blob so you don't have to stop to look for the rock.
thanks for the tip, didnt know other rocks fell lol. so during the ending it said the indian proverb and then went to the title screen.......is it supposed to do that?
It didn't play any movie at all? Did it show Stranger finding the dead body of the last boss and all the water returning to the land?
yeah it showed that, then the indian proverb and then looked like it reset to the title screen. no credits, (which i dont care about) but id hate to have not seen the entire ending.
I'm pretty sure that's it. The credits can be seen from the options screen but I don't remember if it showed them after the ending or not.
It didn't.
I know someone didn't just randomly post the ending to this.
its been out for a while. deal with it.

Agreed. The real point/twist of the story wasn't revealed in any way. No worries.
i also agree. theyre just whiny bitches who probably dont even have the game.
I just finished this one last night. Great game.
A few things bothered me about it though:
1) Too many open spaces with nothing to do in them. Why make these beautiful HUGE areas with nothing in them but space to run around in?
2) Could have been more variety to the enemies and other characters.
3) Enemies start shooting at you way too early. Sometimes you can't even see them yet and you're getting hit.
As great as I think this game is, it had the potential to be much better. Are there plans for a sequel?
Wow, you suck.Quote:

Oddworld's out of business? I'm cool with that. The only game they ever made that I actually enjoyed was Abe's Oddysee. After that, they seemed to go the 'forced wackiness' route Shiny went with EWJ2, which annoyed me. The half-assed jump to 3D just sealed it.Quote:

A couple of posts back, you indicated that you hadn't bothered to play it yet. On what are you basing your opinion that it's a mediocre FPS (which, btw, is played mostly in 3rd person)? I've played through the game twice, and there's nothing mediocre about it, although tastes certainly vary. You and Dolemite and whoever are probably missing out if you haven't played the game, which has highly original gameplay mechanics, a cool and amusing Western setting, and sports some of the better graphics and effects of this generation.Quote:

Actually they have not totally abandoned gaming. They have shifted there focus, but the Oddworld Series is not dead.Quote:
