Grand Theft Auto Series EXCLUSIVE to the PS2 until 2004

ign.com states that Sony and Rockstar have negotiated a deal in which all GTA titles will be exclusive to the PS2. The PC versions are negated from this deal of course...:) Damn, so i'm guessing the XB version that was hinted upon prior to E3 was false...?

May 21, 2002 - Grand Theft Auto 3 and all future titles in the GTA franchise will be exclusive to PlayStation 2 until October 2004, SCEA announced today at its E3 press conference. The hugely popular "thug simulator," developed by DMA Design for Rockstar Games, was the best-selling game title across all platforms last year, and earned IGN's PS2 Game of the Year award amid dozens of other accolades. This announcement means it's curtains for the planned Xbox version of GTA3, which was to be released later this year.
"Given the worldwide acceptance of PlayStation 2, it's natural for Take-Two to partner with Sony Computer Entertainment America and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in its respective markets," said Kelly Sumner, CEO of Take-Two Interactive (Rockstar's parent company). "We want our best-selling franchise to reach the greatest number of consumers. The penetration of PlayStation 2 globally, combined with the pervasive nature and power of the PlayStation brand, will help us achieve this objective. The fact that the PlayStation 2 will be the only home entertainment system on which one can enjoy Grand Theft Auto titles is a great statement for the platform overall."

The amount of money being thrown at Rockstar for exclusive rights for GTA must make make even Microsoft shocked.

Oh well, this doesn't bother me at all, but I was looking foward to seeing this game in action on an Xbox.

Damn, and here I was waiting for the Xbox version all this time.
Oh well. Guess I'll be picking up PS2 GTA3 sometime soon.

After Morrowind, I've lost all interest in the GTA series anyway. PS2 can have it. I'd rather have DOA volleyball... I mean, Ninja Gaiden. Yes, nothing more manly than a manly ninja killing other manly ninjas and getting pecked at by manly birds. :p

Hmm... a system I have no interest in gets exclusive rights to a game I couldn't care less about. Yep the world ain't so bad after all. :)

GTA 3 was my favorite game of 2001 and I was looking forward to buying an enhanced Xbox port. Oh well.

Hopefully some enterprising young programmers will take the initiative of porting the PC version... you know, since porting is supposedly so easy, and now mod chips are out.... ;)

See when he sees that Sony takes Microsofts stance on buying out the compition, he sees how bad it really is.

I dont get what your trying to say. Are you saying that sony is pure evil and that they commit sadistical acts of violent sodomy like microsoft? Or are you saying that they are even worse?Or are you trying to say that m$ sucks ?

Someone explain to me how making a game exclusive to one system "ensures it will reach the largest amount of customers possible." Further proof Sony-whoring causes brain damage.

Well, you see, if you bend the laws of time and space...

If you feel the need to blame someone for this, blame Rockstar for accepting Sony's offer, not Sony for making it, because any console maker would have done the same thing in Sony's place.

I personally don't care and even find it a bit amusing, but the blame is 100% Rockstar. MS's bribe just wasn't big enough for them.

As long as I can play the game on my PC I'm happy.

That's the Game Informer Philosophy. By simply being on PS2 - ney - being EXCLUSIVE to PS2 you reach a the most players possible. This is, according to the recent tomes of GI, is simply a virtua of the Playstation line. For instance:

Games remaining exclusive to Xbox = What? Is Sega trying to save Xbox? We all know the Xbox situation is excatly the same as Dreamcast... or is it?

The only thing the Xbox needs saving from is giving it a rest from all the gaming action its getting so it's poor little motor doesn't burn out. It's powered by slave mice under control of the rat king Bill Gates, at least according to Game Informer. :p

I still don't understand console bashing, at least from consumers, and probably never will. If a game comes out that you really want, you buy the system the game is on. The philospy of the console maker hardly seems to matter as long as you get that game.

The next installment of JSR could be released on the SATAN 9X system, produced by the tormented souls of serial murderers and rapists deep in the bowels of Hell and cost me both my soul and my sanity, and Lucifer couldn't draw up the contract fast enough for me.
