The point is, though, that you can't use that 500MHz machine for graphic design or music production. On top of that, you have to worry about spyware. I like PCs, especially for the *nix support, but Microsoft needs to stop being so pissy about home users who happen to install the same XP build on two of their home machines and focus the time spent designing copy-protection schemes on catching the people who distribute install codes and copied CDs to legitimate people and don't tell them about it.

They do that, but not enough.

And maybe they have a switch that's configured to limit bandwidth on individual machines where gamevet works.

That must be my problem, then. I have a P4 2.2GHz at work, and I'd swear that this thing is only marginally faster than my pokely little 550MHz Mac at home.

Well, what OS are you running? And how much memory do you have? The P4 only has like 126 worth of memory and is running ME.

XP Pro, 256 meg.

Granted, being honest, obviously it is faster than my Mac at home. But there are far too many times when it isn't.

Anything with 256 MB will suck.

Not really. All the PC's come off a small hub sitting in the back. It doesn't matter if anyone's on or not. The 700 MHZ machine just takes a long time to run anything. I'm sure it has more to do with the fact that the hard-drive is probably piss poor and the memory is limited. The machine is also running on Windows NT/2000.

OS X runs fine with 256MB.

My friend uses a K6 166Mhz with 32MB RAM and it loads web pages and downloads files just as fast as his room-mates' XP2400 with 512MB RAM. The thing takes 5min to start acrobat though.
