...on what? I have a 1GHz TiBook with 512MB and I'm dying to get another 512MB in this thing. Any less than 512MB would be unbearable from what I can imagine.

With those specs, your computer should be pretty snappy. Are you sure there isn't something else bogging down your system?

Not entirely. I'm curious to see what my system will be like when I finally make a complete backup and reformat the HD and do a clean 10.3 install. The hard drive in this machine started going bad on me last year and when the new one was installed, my old installation was just cloned, and... well, things have been a little odd since then. I've been putting off reinstalling for the longest time but I should probably do it relatively soon.

OSX 10.4 Tiger comes out late March, or so I hear. You might want to hold off untill then.

As much as I love and defend Mac OSX, I'd never try running it on 256MB of RAM. If there's ever been an OS that really becomes a totally different experience with more RAM, it's OSX.

The average person doesn't know how to adequately maintain a computer, and therein lies the problem. The fact that the average person still uses IE is proof enough.

I'm running XP and have no complaints once-so-ever. It's only bad if you let it be.

The service place did a clone from a bad HD and didn't do an archive/install at the least?

Wow.

Anyway, in answer to the skeptical folks, OS X runs fine on 256MB, but it runs MUCH BETTER with more than 512MB. Remember that if you have less than 5% of your drive's size free X will run slowly because of VM.

Granted its not the main focus of my job, and I'm not doing too anything too hardcore, but I use a 400 MHZ K6-2 for photoshop at work all the time, I make all sorts of graphics and signs for work.

its has a gig of ram, and a 8mb Buffer HD and it runs just fine.

runs cooledit pro pretty well too for when I want to whip up a custom mp3 ringtone.

spyware shouldn't be a problem at ANYONE'S job, unless you have people surfing places that they shouldn't be using at work....
