Seth McFarlane is back with a new show on Fox. What do you think.
It's ok.
To me, if Family Guy is coming back - why have this?
I mean it seems like the EXACT same kind of in your face offensive comedy which is great but 2 shows like that? I dunno we'll see.
I'm gonna watch it a lot, I do like it. I'm just saying it's been done... by them.
The preview from a while back was basically 7 minutes from this first show. It wasn't anything special then and it's nothing special now.
I suppose the best way to explain this show is that it's not great, or even good, but it passes the time well enough.
This show is kinda weak. It's like Family Guy lite. I'll watch it ,but I see it going the same path as the first family Guy( and this time Seth deserves it)
They better have a Stewie Cameo
(Wow that Family Guy promo is weak)
Ok, whoever thought up the gay alien and the perv german fish needs a new friggin job. The rest of the show is basically Family Guy.
I don't like how they changed Steve at all. They made him slightly less pathetic and more egotistical. They also made his voice much more annoying.
As for the rest of the episode, I actually kinda liked it, except the execution for some of the jokes seemed a little off timing.
perv fish could be funny in the future. I do agree the alien is a joke.
It's amazing how boring the dad is( whats his name) Peter Grifin was way more entertaining. The nerd son is okay( I actually like him better than Chris Griffin) The daughter is way to similar to Meg. However some of the political jokes between her and her dad are funny
daughter: You know these wouldn't hapen if we put together anti-gun laws
Dad: You know what I got to say to that? (Pause)....... Wait, I couldn't fart.
Something like that. It was one of the more funny scenes. The mother seemed okay( Comedy when he slapped her by *mistake*) but lazy. She seems like a hippy for some reason. I like her a bit more than Lois Griffin. (It's nice to see a T.V mother that's not a plain rip-off of Marge Simpson.)
The mother is, in no way, better than Lois.
Damn, I thought it was pretty funny. Yeah, it had a hell of a lot in common with Family Guy, but in my opinion thats not a bad thing.
The way I see it,if you like Family Guy, I dont see how you can even remotely hate on this.I'd much rather see the FOX line-up populated with shows like this than O.C. or whatever else they pass for entertainment these days (what else do they have besides 24?)
Lois was like Marge on crack. ( She was kinda hot though)
They have nothing besides 24( unless you like american Idol. If that is the case then F*** you)Quote:

While I think Peter is cool as hell in Family Guy, he's a .....a lazy slob of a dad...and....uh.....I dont know,,,what the hell else does he do?
The entertainment is in how the character/show is written, and since we have the same writer/creator doing it, I dont see much of a difference in the two.
They were trying too hard to come up with gimmick characters. Feels like the show was conceived by the marketing department.
I prefer Peter more. Everything the Dad did I predicted( Except when he slapped his wife, that was funny)Quote:

How about every stops comparing it directly to Family Guy? The show generated enough genuine laughter to be enjoyable.
The characters are good enough, except the mom, who is really just an awful design and personality. Actually, the visual designs of the characters are all pretty lacking.
It's kind of hard not to compare it to Family Guy, given the obvious similarities, but I agree - it was funny and thats all that matters.Quote:

Man, this was pretty poor. I guess Seth McFarlene has a pretty limited imagination. The Alien and Fish are so fucking stupid, they just ruin things. The sister is pretty useless as well. It seems like it would have been best to just have the mom and dad, and the son. All the political stuff got old real fast.
This show was being made before Family Guy was requested to be made again by fox, and its painfully obvious that he was trying to bring back Family Guy within this show. Same exact humor, but with other characters that don't work with the Family Guy humor. Its like they took a Family Guy script and reworked it with these characters.
Its a good thing that Family Guy took off on Cable, because if it did'nt and this was Seths last chance he would be out of a job again.
I love the alien, although I prefered the original voice for the son. The father is just an insane parody, and I loved him jumping through the window of the mall like a maniac. I enjoyed the six minute pilot much more than the 30 minute one, although this one had some funny stuff in it. The next ep won't be shown until May, the same day as Family Guy. Clash, that "Family Guy script with new characters" description fits well, especially since the thing with the son and the chick is nearly identical to the thing with Neil and Meg on FG.
How can you not compare two shows by the same writers and animators which both fall into the same comedy category, have parallel casts (a dad, mom, son, daughter, and two novelty characters) and use the same types of jokes?Quote:

Its going to be overkill for sure. People that are excited for Family Guy are either going to love this show for being just like Family Guy, or get annoyed with it for that reason. And people that dislike American Dad arn't going to be too inclined to watch Family Guy, and vice versa.Quote:

That would be ideal, and prevent the writers and folks from getting burnt out. Plus, it would leave the door open for AD to come back later, whereas now, if this dies, FG HAS to succeed. I could've been a nice plan "B" for them.
Aside from a few funny jokes, I just didn't find it funny. Even if this wasn't a rip of Family Guy, the show itself wasn't funny. I found myself bored at times during it, and the when it ended, I didn't have that same sense of joy as I did after watching any Family Guy episode.
I don't think American Dad will last long, and if it does, I'd love to see what material Seth could come up with with such little to work with in characters. I'm sure Seth will be more comfortable working with Family Guy seeing how he's has 3 season worth of superb materal.
I will say this, I felt the same way about the Family Guy the first time I saw the premiere episode, so maybe Seth's just got the urge to overkill in the pilot.
this show sucks. and (heaven help me,) i like family guy.
I played WoW and didn't watch this or the Super Bowl.
I win.
I thought the funnies joke in the whole show, was the jack in the box joke,,,,
Damn, step away from the keyboard for awhile! At least Yoshi has us all beat for addiction.Quote:

This show is garbage.
Was the pilot they showed any different from that short clip that popped up on the internet a while back? I watched the first 5 minutes, and when it felt that I had already seen it before I changed the channel. Family Guy is bad enough, the world doesn't need another shitty show like this.
I really really really <3 Regus.
Regus : cartoons as diffusionx : video games
Pretty much. He only comes here to bitch on the games forum, I pretty much only come here to bitch on the tv/movie forum. Plus, I watch a lot more cartoons than play games.Quote:

Regus, they fleshed out that small pilot with no plot into a 30 minute show that almost had a point. They appear to have aged the son, and they changed his voice.
I thought the show was funny and entertaining. Sure it's no Family Guy, but it still is better then most of the garbage on TV these days. Some of you need o get the sticks out of your bum's and lighten up.;)
I love the political jokes. The dad and her daughter are comedy when they are together. The alien grew on me when i watched it again later that night. The fish seem to be a waste ,but he had like 5 minutes of T.V time so I will give him a chance.
Why does everyone think the writer are all going to get burned out? Maybe he has more than one set of writers. Maybe the next season of FG was done a long time ago and scrapped when they became cancelled,so he is pulling it out of the closet.
If they keep more political jokes in this and keep more cultural/religious jokes in Family Guy I will be happy. It's nice to see a dumbass conservative that I can like instead of a dumbass liberal I have to like.
I didn't like it. I think it tries to hard and falls flat on it's face. Maybe it will get better with time.
Same. I didn't even know this was on until a roommate told me afterwards.Quote:

They didn't change anything. Stop pretending they did.
I was talking about it today at school. The consensus is that it's a pretty good show, but not Family Guy... quite yet.
Personally, I loved it. The whole G.W. phone call with God was hilarious.
Opaque, unless they released a later preview, the son's voice definitely changed dramatically, and it looked to me, going off of memory, that the son had been aged in the full-length pilot. And they obviously added something to make it go from roughly seven minutes to a bit over 20 of actual air time. The pilot will be shown on AS, replacing Futurama, on Sunday and Thursday.
Voice or no voice it doesn't matter, it's not that big a deal.
Just like a trailer for a movie is parts taken from the full movie, the 7 minute preview of American Dad was parts taken from the full episode we saw on Sunday.Quote:

I DLed both as one torrent a couple of days early and the only thing that was changed was the son's voice (he sounds a bit older, I guess) and it was for the better IMHO.
[edit]
Looking at them now, they did slightly change the son's appearance. The first one is from the "trailer"...

He does look a little older now.
Oh really fool...
But that's all they changed?

From what I can tell. But I'm not going through it all, that was just from the first 30 seconds or so.Quote:

Is the humor very similar to Family Guy?
I'm just wondering why this is needed at all if Family Guy is coming back to suck it up some more.
Humor is like Family Guy with more political to it. I don't like that aspect too much. It feels like one of those topical humor shows where they break out into a dialogue that promotes a "message" or somthing, sometimes. Otherwise, yeah, same humor. Damn funny humor at that.Quote:

Well, he might not be able to legally stop production of the show.
Family Guy is coming back (sadly), and this show seems to have missed its mark - nobody that doesnt like Family Guy like this, and many FG fans dont like it either. It got generally horrible reviews too. Hopefully Fox used this showing as a test, and now wont pick it up.
Well, they ordered a 19 episode production run, and it's a pilot, so of course it's a test. Plus, they worded it gently in promos. "Preview" episode my ass...
This makes me sad.Quote:

Why? The emmy awards saved AD from getting chopped last year. That would suck if that show got axed for this. Just give us Family Guy back, don't saturate your market with two shows like it.
That just can't be. I thought American Dad was pretty funny and has some great potential, but Arrested Development is just pure gold. If they take it off the air for a clone of a show they already have, I will be pissed.Quote:

Decent, way better than the pilot. As long as it's on after Family Guy I'll watch it but if they change its schedule I won't bother.
Still feels like the exact same thing as Family Guy.
Except Family Guy was original when it started. At least Futurama was something entirely different.
I didn't see most it. It was pretty bad, especially considering Family Guy does what it does only better. The alien is a neat character.
I'm sorry but that show completely overplayed homosexuality, was entirely unoriginal, annoying characters, and just Family guy except worse in every way.
Yes. I said all of this in one concise "It was pretty bad."Quote:

The pilot episode will be on the new Family Guy volume 1 DVD double dip (err... Limited Edition set), which includes a Family Guy t-shirt.
The pilot sucked.
This episode was terrible. I could not watch it.
Ghost Dad > American Dad.
When Futurama first came out, people said the same things. Eventually though, it became better than The Simpsons.
That's not saying much.
Those people were dumb. The first season of Futurama is surprisingly strong, and there are very few shows that can match it right off the bat.
The 2 episodes of American Dad I've seen on Comedy Central and Fox have been absolutely terrible.
Watched last night ep, and thought it wasnt all that great. It just felt like FG wanna be, and was trying too hard. Couple of jokes were funny, but alot more fell flat.
I enjoyed both episodes of the Simpsons (the second more than the first) and was LOLing throughout.
Coming from one of those who did say Futurama wasnt all that, I can say that the show had all the elements in place, it just... was so different from The Simpsons and Fox was playing it off like Simpsons 2 in promos. The early episodes, though, looking back, are really good. Its just the show didnt really hit its stride until it started going into the character's backstories.Quote:

Four segments of gay newsreporters, making the same exact joke each time - annoying.
Futurama was not better than the Simpsons in its prime (season 4-6), the simpsons just went down hill as Futurama hit its stride.
Yes it is. And Ive watched way too much of both.Quote:

They're both amazing and probably the funniest cartoons ever produced. It doesn't matter which is better (and it's kind of childish to be defending one over the other like you are).
I enjoy Futurama a lot, and the reason it failed was because the executives at Fox wanted Groening to focus on The Simpsons. They gave it a crummy timeslot at 7 while they could've easily put it at 8:30 after the Simpsons to have a Groening hour (or whatever).
Fox tried to fuck the show over from day one, and they did. They did the same to Family Guy. Family Guy catered to a low denominator and that's what saved them (not a bad thing, because it's funny) in the end.
The best part about American Dad was the men in the office who said they wish they had vaginas because vaginas were great.
The first time with its "thanks for correcting me, that's how I learn" was hilarious. But I agree that by the last time it was little more than boring filer.Quote:

I remember when people would just compare that show to the simpsons and south park in order to detract from it.
Family Guy is not and never was monumental, and the Simpsons and South Park are both far superior in every way.... except for new Simpsons, which really are a low-grade Family Guy clone (extremely obvious parodies and setups, Homer in ultra-Jerkass mode, stupid plotlines, etc.)
If you can't understand why an old 40's - 50's reporter clicking pictures over the fence while homer is in a precarious position is funny then I'm afraid I can't help you.Quote:

They're both funny incidents (maybe it was exclusively burns, I don't have all of the episodes memorized).
Better than Family Guy, too.Quote:
