Cell's breakthrough multi-core architecture and ultra high-speed communications capabilities deliver vastly improved, real-time response for entertainment and rich media applications, in many cases 10 times the performance of the latest PC processors.
Among the highlights of Cell released today:
* Cell is a breakthrough architectural design -- featuring eight synergistic processors and top clock speeds of greater than 4 GHz (as measured during initial hardware testing)
* Cell is a multicore chip capable of massive floating point processing
* Cell is OS neutral and supports multiple operating systems simultaneously

Very cool, though I doubt the PS3 will be getting a 4GHz version, unless Sony is marketing it as a multimedia heater,

im wondering why these havnt been annouced for the pc. with both Intel and AMD going for the dual core cpu's in the next cycle.

Well, considering they're the largest information technology company in the world, that they have the best selling laptop in the world, and are the #1 server provider in the world, I imagine they matter to a couple people outside of the personal computer.

Yeah. I think I think I'm as addicted to that feeling I get with industry hype as I am with playing the games themselves.

That and the inevitable cycle (hype/hope/disappointment) it all puts me through.

When you're not disappointed though, it's almost as good as when the best game ever drops out of the blue into your lap.

IBM still provides personnal computers, for the workplace. I believe they do this through a lease program. Most financial firms use IBM, over any other brand on the market.

Not to mention nearly everyone that owns a Mac is using an IBM chip.

i wonder how it compares to an 8 Opteron cluster. I would imagine it won't be long before AMD throws 8 winchesters on a single chip. I want to see those apples to apples comparisons.
