On the whole, the new testament is incredibly positive, and the parts that aren't have a moral. If you look at the bible as a theological text to learn from, its quite valuable. well, lets face it, in general, we are worthless sinners. Religion is used as a source of comfort and growth, and accepting or overcoming your bad traits plays a significant role in that. Incase you didn't know, in most religions, it also says that god loves you.

So, if they didn't believe in this God, were they not sent to hell because they did not worship him?

I will say what I said as a child. If God loves us all, he would be more than welcome to wipe out pestilence, war, famine, death, etc for us and make life perfect. Heaven on Earth.

If he is up there, and he's not helping us, he's in violation of his own Commandments. I don't follow what I don't know of.

While I wholeheartedly agree in the need for consistent self-improvement, growth, and self-discipline, these things have their own rewards in this world that don't need the heaven/hell stick and carrot. In fact, I think Christianity is
idealogically opposed to this. Jesus= salvation, no work needed. And just what do I need salvation from?
