Inspiration

I consider myself a creative person, and it's an important part of my life. My focus over the past several years has been music and songwriting. It rarely seems to come naturally to me, though, and lately this has been insanely frustrating. I sit down and try to write a song, and before you know it I'm reworking different voicings of the same chords and progressions for songs I've already written. I can't seem to write any lyrics that don't sound trite. So basically, I'm in a rut, and I don't know what to do about it.

How about you guys, what do you do for inspiration? What's your muse?

Look back at what I've done and see where I could improve. That, and watching wrestling/listening to music/playing an emotional game always work well for me when I'm in a creative rut.

Traveling usually always works for me. A change of scenery always inspires me.

friday was the first day in a at least a month I haven't smoked pot, it was fucking depressing, I think it might even be part of the problem creatively.

Every day I think more and more about just getting a van and going out on the road for a while. I'd love to spend more time in europe too.

When I write down lyrics I generally think of what stuff inspires me or what makes me angry. A lot of my stuff is directed at the culture and things involving defeat, depression and perseverance through these things (my lyrics are usually positive and directed at other peoples experiences rather then my own a good deal of the time). I'm not sure what kind've band or music you're writing for though, these kind've things don't fit with some genres.
