More XBox2 in 2005 non sense

I personally hate the fact that XBox 2 is most likely coming out this holiday season, my current system selection is treating me quite well. I know I am going to be forced to buy XBox 2 at launch though due to Halo 2.5/3 (pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase!).

"In every cycle, some manufacturer not profiting from the current cycle is eager to kick-start the next one," he said at the time.

EA recently confirmed that next generation Xbox titles would ship alongside current generation offerings later this year, although the certainty of a European release this side of 2006 has been muted: until now.

Microsoft has already publicly snubbed the suggestion of Xbox 2 being shown for the first time at GDC in March, and it now seems obvious that E3 will see the grand unveiling of the machine.

A Microsoft spokesman characteristically swatted away any next gen talk: "Microsoft has not made any announcements regarding the next generation. We are currently very focused on further building the success of the Xbox console today and are not speculating on timing for a future version."

However, it must be noted that with the current lack of Xbox console stock still proving to be a huge problem for retailers and the future Xbox first party release schedule having almost completely dried up, it's an interesting comment for Microsoft to make at the point when every publisher and their dog are busy leaking Xbox 2 software information.

Can't argue that at all, although my PS2 is feeling pretty dated at this point. The games are as good as ever but the framerates and texturing suck in comparison to Xbox/Gamecube. Still, it's not like I'm suffering through lack of games to play on it.

For three years when people asked me when the next round of consoles was I said 2006, because it sounded about right. Microsoft's jumping the gun is annoying on a personal level because I hate being wrong.

Yea I've been feeling this as well about the PS2. I love it, but it's showing it's age. Mircrosoft is destroying the tradition if they launch it way to early. Just like an American "I'm American myself :bang: ".

We've had this discussion before (several times, in fact), but I'll say once again that I'll be more than ready for a new console in 9-10 months. Yes, great games can still be made on the current gen, but the stuff is looking pretty dated. 2 years more years of sitting on technology that is already lagging far behind current PCs is too long to wait in my book.

People are clamoring to drop $200 - $250 on a DS or PSP -- barely more than kid's toys, imo. In that context, I'm happy to spend $300 every 4 years or so on a brand new, cutting-edge console.

Hopefully MS can pull of good balancing act -- they need enough tech to stay competitive with later released consoles, while keeping the costs low for profitability. I assume they've given this more than a little thought...

Some of the greatest games come out during the end of a generation's cycle. So if you can extend that period, theoretically, you will have more AAA games to play. Getting more bang for your console buck.

In the end, gamers get hurt. Instead of an awesome title for the current gen, the focus is shifted to the next gen to rush out an average title that can be ready for launch.

(Starcraft: Ghost (debateable if it will be a AAA title) is an example of the above theory.)

First, there is no guarantee that triple A titles will come out during a console's blue hair years. Second, a developer will look at their options when developing a game during a change over cycle. On one hand, toolsets are already in place for existing hardware, and a large consumer base is available if they publish on what's available now. On the other hand, they can probably spend more money to create a better product closer to their vision on the new hardware, have a smaller consumer base, and less competition for gaming dollars at a system's launch. Even if the XB2 was coming out next year, studios would have been making decisions based on those criteria since last summer. It's ultimately up to the studio to decide what platform they'll make their games for.

THEORETICALLY. Or developers will be forced to release software that doesn't meet their vision and doesn't achieve AAA quality because today's hardware just can't handle what they want their game to do. Or they'll sit on their game until a console comes along that can do what they want to do.

Or, as I said above, developers bring out a game that has tons of wasted potential, because they couldn't accomplish what they wanted on existing systems.

Look at it this way: if Microsoft doesn't close the gap with Sony during the next generation, they'll most likely bow out of the video game arena. Then we'll be left with Sony and Nintendo, which basically means Sony (not dissing Nintendo here; they just go after the market they want these days). How would that be good for gamers? We need competion. The only way Microsoft feels it has a chance to beat or tie Sony is by coming to the new table a little early. I agree with them that it's their best chance.

Ultimately, no matter when a new console comes out, the developers will choose which system they want to focus their efforts on. Just because something new and shiny is coming doesn't mean that they'll drop what they're working on just to work on the new and shiny thing. That said, the Xbox is pretty much tapped out at this point. From a hardware aspect, it's always been a shallow pool for developers to play in.

The great "end of system's life" games, if they were planned to come out anyhow, will come out, as others have already said. The only difference is you won't have as many games between now and that point.

If no, then you've no room to bitch. If you've played every single game you want to play, and only have three new games to look forward to because the new Xbox is coming out this year, then I'll be happy to listen to your complaints.

Yeah, c'mon, any AAA games that were going to make this year would have to have been in development for a while. Anything that's been moved to next-gen consoles probably wasn't gonna make it out this year anyway, and therefore would have gotten moved to next-gen regardless of XB2's release.

Alternately, I could work gaming retail and not be able to escape the effects of a new console even if I wanted.

I didn't get an X-Box until about a bit over a year ago, and I seriously doubt I'll be getting an X-Box 2 at launch. I think the games on X-Box 1 look more than just good, and I personally am just not feeling the need for a new piece of tech from Microsoft.

I have to admit, I'm not the biggest fan of wireless controllers. When the batteries start to go, they act goofy; and you can get your channels all mixed up (expecially in a setting with a lot in use, like a dormitory). It also seems like there may be tiny amounts of lag with wireless controllers -- but that just may be placebo. All I know is playing on wireless DDR pads sucks ass.

With that said I can understand that most people would find this great, and even I can appreicate it for 90% of the games I play. I just don't want to be playing something like Beatmania or in a fighting game tournament with a wireless controller, that's all (but that's the vast minority of players).

Wireless controllers could be fine, so long as they last long, and work perfectly -- meaning, I hope they have some ports for those who trust cords more than batteries.

I know backwards compat is important for some, but I couldn't care less about it. I played a PS game once on my PS2. If Xbox360 is even remotely worth its salt, I shouldn't feel a need fill its tray with old Xbox games.

It's nice to not have to pull out my PS1 everytime I want to play Castlevania:SOTN or such, but I can count on my fingers the number of times I've used that capability on the PS2 or the GBA, myself. It'd be nice, but if it means the XB2 is $100 cheaper without that capability, I'd rather have the cheaper hardware and keep my other 2 Xboxes around. Besides, backward compatibilty doesn't mean that Mame, Kawa, XGens, etc. would work on XB2. ;) Funny thing about backwards compatibility is, only the PS2 and Gameboys have had that capability out of the box, at least in the last 15 years.

Are these kinds of things a problem for Bluetooth? Honestly, unless Bluetooth is a huge battery sucker, that is what should be used for the wireless controllers instead of any sort of older technology.

What I think would be nice would be to still have ports on the machine - at least four - and have those ports be the way you recharge your controller. You can plug the controller in, and use it corded while it is recharging, and then when it is all juiced up, unplug the wires and play that way.

Unless every game that was released for the Xbox is re-released for the Xbox 2, there is reason to play the old Xbox's games.

My predictions.

Xbox 2 to have HalfLife 2 with beefier graphics and a Counter Strike online game at launch. and no Halo 2.5....that is a myth.

And while Microsoft isn't denying its authenticity, one would almost certainly expect the multibillion-dollar corporation to hire a designer that had a slightly greater Photoshop skills.

Microsoft doesn't often delay things but it also doesn't have a history of releasing second rate equipment. I reckon 50/50 they'd delay it to improve it.

I'm curious why people see the need to buy consoles the moment they are released. I've never owned one because I've always been satisfied by a small number of games available on my PC. At the moment I'm circulating through 4 games and I've been on the same ones for the better part of 6 months. Besides I'm mainly a FPS fan. Who wants to use a control stick for that :(

There is no way that Sony would make the PS3 look like that. NO WAY. Well, okay, they might be that crazy, but that would be beyond typical Sony insanity.

I like that the next gen releases aren't launching at the same time. Who wants them all to be equally powerful and come out at the same time so they can buy 3 consoles in a week? If one comes out each year for the next three years that would be great. We'll get a variety of game designs for the next 5-6 years instead of every system being capable doing the same thing.

Thats if they get off their ass and make a game. Lets not forget so quickly that Halo 2 is technically unfinished, and Bungie spend the better part of 2003 doing jack shit (watch the video that came with Halo 2). Thats why its Halo 3, and honestly, I'd doubt even a finished Halo 2 by launch.

My prediction: Halo 2.5 doesn't exist. Bungie is devoting resouces to either Phoenix or Halo 3 (and Microsoft's money says Halo 3). Instead, I predict we'll see an online only Halo 2 follow up to encourage XBL adoption on the XB2. Bungie had four guys dedicated to the multiplayer portion of Halo 2. I figure it'd be easy enough to grab those guys and a few more to tweak textures, models, etc. for the XB2 chipset, maybe add some weapons, and add quite a few maps and some new modes (and if the XB2 isn't backwards compatible, port the Halo 2 engine to work on the XB2).

Include that with the XB2 XBL starter pack, and you'll see some bites. And a lot of bitching about "rehashes."
