War of the Monsters!
So, today my brother gave me my belated birthday gift, a limited edition promo of War of the Monsters for the PS2.

It's in a funky 12" sleeve, and came with the full game, the full press kit (making of, screens, art, sounds, etc.) and a massive 50's sci-fi style poster.
The game itself is quite a pleasant suprise. I was expecting another Godzilla game ('Destroy All Monsters' etc.) - and I don't like those games. They're clunky and stupid, and often feel like you're running around kicking cardboard boxes. WotM is different.

The game is played from a close 3rd person view, making it play like Mech Assault, only much faster. Being so close to the action makes for a much more intense experience, as opposed to other monster games and their 'sky-cam's. The characters feel solid, are nice and responsive and look great in action.
The environments are where this game owns the competition though. Everything is totally destructable, and BIG. Something about throwing your opponent THROUGH a building, then watching the whole fucking thing topple over onto screaming people and traffic makes me grin. Cars/Poles/Anything can be picked up and hurled at each other. You can also scale any building in the arena.
Actual hand to hand combat is pretty basic, a few combo's, a ranged attack and a long and short range special. This doesn't really matter though, as most of the fighting that you engage in is using your environment rather than your fists.
Stylisticly, the game pulls the whole 50's B-Movie Sci-Fi thing off just great. Spinning 'Earth Fights Back!' logo's and cheesy big band tunes are awesome.
One thing this game does that I haven't seen done properly before is it's handling of split screen multiplayer. It's split vert, and when you enter melee range, the screens join, giving you a proper idea of space and where your opponent is. It makes too much sense.
I'm playing the PS2 version, and it runs at a constant 60fps, even in split screen.
I give this game a big fat 'FUCK YES', though it saddens me that it has more than likey been totally looked over on the shelves.

Nice gift.
I still want to play this someday but I'm still waiting for the eventual sub-20 dollar pricedrop. It's made by the guys who did Twisted Metal so it can't possibly suck.

Revolter, I've got an extra copy that I got when it was $5 at Circuit City. It shouldn't be more than $10 or $15 now, and if you can't find one, I'll sell you (or trade something for) my sealed copy. There is some awesome destruction in this game, although the controls are a bit odd at times. This is basically what King of the Monsters would be in 3D, and on speed.

Thanks for the offer Jeremy but I'm not in a rush to play anything right now. I'll keep it in mind though.

I was all over this game at release, but my brother and quickly found out how unbalanced the "impale" moves were and it just became a race to impale the other first. Definitely a huge step above anything comparable though.
