There's nothing wrong with black people as a whole, I should know, cause I'm a black person. It's certain blacks that fuck it up for everyone, just like certain whites do for white people.

I remember after the whole Jeffrey Dahmer I started looking at white people differently for a couple months, just like after those black snipers I ducked everytime I saw a black person on a roof.

Unfortunately, black people (at least the members of my generation) were/are taught that we are not members of this country, merely inhabitants (hence why we are called African-Americans as opposed to just Americans).

We are/were programmed to believe that everything we do reflects on the race as a whole because we are an invisible people. Out of sight, out of mind. Therefore, the blacks who are visible (media, politics, wanted posters) represent all of us regardless of whether their actions be of ill-repute or worthy of praise.

You can see this programming in effect when you see young blacks on television acting like morons (which is often) and every black person over the age of 25 in the room watching hanging their heads in shame.

It is a matter of pride and hope for black people (at least for the American blacks, can't say same for blacks anywhere else) when we take credit for the accomplishments of our brothers. It gives us hope as a racial family. For us, the skin color is more than just a difference in protein production, it is what binds us together as brothers.

That may all be true, but you are admitting people in this case are taking the good with the bad. It would be nice to be part of a group where it is an unspoken know that "we are in this together" but it would also mentally hold me back from breaking out of the mindset that there is only so much I can accomplish. Instead of teaching my kids they have to do the right thing to represent their culture, I'll probably teach them to do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. It's very hard for me to relate and to see any long term benefit of what I perceive as holding oneself back.

There is two sides to the coin of "brotherhood" and the side that holds certain people back is a bitch.

Am I misunderstanding? All I know is I don't hang my head in shame when anyone does anything stupid if they aren't me. I don't have to prove anything to anybody.

Thinking you represent a group is playing into the hands of the ignorant people that think you represent a group. It's like this is the type of thought that feeds off of/into racism.

It's a conundrum of sorts.

Try to understand. This way of thought isn't conscious. It's programmed at the subconcious level. The way we speak, the way we learn to perceive, the way we are reared as raised, music, books, media, etc. All of this is subliminal programming that teaches us "You are different. You are hated. No one cares about you. If you are to succeed then you must work twice as hard to gain half as much as everyone else. Make a name foe yourself, but above all, DO NOT DISGRACE THE RACE."

It's difficult for non-blacks to understand this way of thinking or the programming that produces it. But when you are the most hated ethic group on the planet, it makes you start to wonder if you were born black as some kind of retarded, cosmic joke.

Many of us fight against this programming because we realize that it is holding us back, but it isn't easy. Still others succumb to the programming, falling into a victim's mentality and seek to succeed by any means, even if it mean selling their integrity and spiraling into ignorance.

Personally, I'm still waiting for God to tell me what the hell He put me here for.
