A 1 million unit lead for the DS, with the PSP just $40 more in a country with a greater willingness to spend a lot on gadgets.

The market Sony is going for with the PSP are the kind of people that drop $300 on cell phones without even thinking twice. $250 for a portable online Madden playing device is nothing.

I agree the buying UMD movies is retarded, but you can easily just rip your DVDs to a memory stick if you wanted.

FWIW, low end portable DVD players generally sell about $129. At my local Wal-Mart, the lowest unit is $99.

Your analysis is missing something important - the weeks the PSP won were the three most recent ones. Which indicates a momentum shift.

And take away the million unit lead the DS has, and the PSP is outselling the DS by 5,000 units. If you ask me, thats pretty fucking amazing for a handheld first-timer going against the company with a 10-year stranglehold on the handheld market.

That shift was after the holiday season too. Then again, does Japan have the same holiday season we do?

That wasn't my analysis, it was from the link. In Japan, the systems were out almost the exact same amount of time and Nintendo sold through more than double (!) the amount of units. Considering the Sony unit is much more powerful and only sold for $40 more, that's an amazing victory for Nintendo.

In the US, the DS has a much longer head start, the price difference is a much larger $100, and the American consumer is less willing to pay high prices for game systems than the Japanese. It'll be interesting to see how the PSP sells through in the U.S. this year.

Well, "easy" maybe for you and me, not easy for your average Joe. And if you want to do that, you're going to have to have a 1GB memory stick, which add in $100+ more.
