But retailers love forcing consumers to buy high markup add-ons because it’s free profit to them. My housemate bought a PS2 a couple weeks ago and he was forced to buy two or three shitty old games with it. Not just at one store, but everywhere he went.Quote:

I guess I really dont blame some retailers for trying to force other shit with hardware purchases. There is almost NO money at all to be made for a retail store when they sell a console. The cost is so damn high. Why do you think EVERY store has the same prices on Xboxs and PS2s and such but the games are always going on sale. Its shitty they do this yes but I really don't blame them. In fact right now at my store our company is ALWAYS sending us emails to still bundle all hardware. I dont do it I just try my best to sell some other shit with it. And if all they want is the console so be it. But it is pretty retarded when thats all they buy. I was really stupid to see people buy PS2 only at launch with nothing else. Hell, some people said they would just buy PS1 games for now....WTF!Quote:

Things like that wouldn't be so bad if the video shown wasn't grainy as all Hell. In that sense, the UMD stuff should provide clean video, which certainly counts for something.
You're somewhat right. DVD's weren't popular when they first came out in Japan. Japan was a pretty big LD market, and I think a lot of people were perfectly happy continuing on with LD. So, the format didn't catch on nearly as fast as it did here, where LD wasn't nearly as huge and the market was just waiting for a new, better format than VHS.Quote:

I know, but... I mean... that is bordering on an unbelievable level of stupidity. If I'm correct in understanding that DS also has a Nintendo-brand means of wireless play, what in God's name was their reason for putting in 802.11 and not putting in the main thing it would be used for?Quote:

Sure, i'd rather pay $30 for it. I'd rather get it for free, but if $50 is asked for quality software i only feel as jipped as i do when i part with the same amount for a copy of Paper Mario or Metal Gear Solid.
Hell, i remember paying $40 for each of the Final Fantasy Legend and Adventure games way back in the day. Nah, i'm not talking about the slightly cheaper Sunsoft re-releases. i mean way back, when we were all just fine with that green blurry screen and colors were supplied by too much sun or our own imagination. I remember paying $40 for Zoo Keeper just a few weeks ago... and only slightly regretting it. If every other DS game was the same price i wouldn't have blinked.
No thanks. GBA games started at 35-40. It took a few months for Nintendo to realize that mistake.
Ooooh yeah. I remember Megaman Battle Network or whatever at $40. Same for Tactics Ogre. But then it was only the third parties selling for that much. Nintendo kept around $30. Honestly, it'd be nice if all games, reguardless of platform went for around $30.
It won't happen, but i'm a bigger fan of portables anyway. As long as they don't push above $50 i won't cry too much.
It's all psychological. Most people won't pay $50 for handheld games, even if the games are PS2 quality.Quote:

Nintendo can release a TCPIP library somewhere down the line, if they haven't already, otherwise each dev will write their own as needed.
You're WRONG! There's Kenshui Tendo Dokuta and Band Brothers. Neither of which are available in anything besides Japanese. Hey, we can at least pretend there was no such thing as Bejeweled.Quote:

For the record, Feel the Magic sucks hard.
;\ And why the hell would i spend $50 for a game that i already have? (ignore Mr. Driller) I don't give a shit about anything besides Lumines and that Mercury game. I don't understand all this Ridge Racers hype. It's pretty but so what? Just don't tell anyone i want Darkstalkers.

Yeah, I don't get this FTM love. It's pretty boring; Touched! is way better even if it isn't as good as the original.
Uhh... something seems odd about Finch's last post. Partially because I don't think I've EVER seem him cuss. *heh*
Obvious prediction #54: The PSP will be as popular as the PS2 in the US, but the UMD format will be as popular as the PS2's Firewire port.
I'd buy them on UMD if they were cartoons like The Simpsons or Aqua Teen Hunger Force and contained a whole season's worth of episodes.Quote:

And I never said Feel the Magic was godly or a "killer app"; it's pretty obvious that the game is a one-thrill experience once you've completed the game. This argument about "oh it's boring" coming from you and Joust in particular came out of nowhere. It doesn't really have any direct relevance to my original statement in response James' comment -- who insisted that games like Yoshi: Touch & Go and the forthcoming Castlevania are supposedly "original" titles and should be associated in the group as PSP launch titles said to be retreads of their respective console counterparts.

Well, i really like Zoo Keeper, love it even, but it's a complete rip off of Bejeweled, so it's not at all original. I like the animals better than the rocks, tho. Even the music, which seems to piss a lot of people off, is kind of relaxing to me. That's right manager. I am a failure.
Well, I think Yoshi:TaG is quite original in that it'd be in the top 5% of original videogames. The difference between Castlevania DS and what James was calling 'retreads' is that it'll still be worthwhile in that it's a new adventure. You can't say that about Twisted Metal, THRemix, whatever. Even as a highly derivative sequel it'd still be much more fresh.
For those who were doubting people spending $250 or so on a PSP vs. a DS as a gift, consider that last year's "hot gift" was the iPod, which were more than that.
Doesn't the PSP bundle also include Spiderman 2 on UMD? That's what I read in the Hardcore Gamer preview anyways.Quote:

Swift, if the PSP UMDs can only hold a couple of hours worth of material for a movie, what makes you think they'll be able to fit a whole season of a TV show like the Simpsons on one of them? Now they could do multiple UMDs for it, but I can't see that being profitable, at least at the start.
It's definitely something they should try out. I can't see the logic in paying for a whole movie that can just be rented for a quarter of the price, but things like TV shows and even mini-series like Band of Brothers would be awesome on UMD, which would, like you said, have to use multiple disks. I would pay for them, so long as the quality was good enough.
You're really going to want to watch something like Band of Brothers on a little PSP screen, instead of your regular TV?
Aqua Teen, Sealab, things that are like 15 minute episodes, those kinds of things I can see watching while waiting somewhere or something.
Most every spectators stated it would launch between $250 and $300, but to be fair: if you cut it, you keep it.Quote:

I dunno if this belongs here but Sony is cutting Japanese gamers with a bad square button a break and offering to fix it for free and also stating the next batch will have properly placed square buttons. So much for Kutaragi's completely moronic statement that "We intentionally designed it that way. You don't question where an architect puts the door to a building." Heh. You do if the "door" obscures or gets stuck in part of the "window" when it's opened. Anyways...

Quote:
TOKYO--Following complaints by consumers in Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment officially announced that it will repair any PSP suffering from a defective square button. According to reports, a manufacturing defect caused some units' square buttons to stick when pressed and not pop back up.
Sony released a statement that said the problem affected only about 0.6 percent of the 510,000 PSPs that were shipped during 2004. The company assured gamers that the manufacturing problem has since been solved, and PSP units shipped after the start of 2005--all those that will go on sale in the US on March 24--will not suffer from the problem.
Owners of a Japanese PSP with a defective square button should send the unit to Sony's repair service, which will fix the machine for free. Details on the PSP swap are available from the official Japanese PlayStation site.

I'm getting really sick of this argument. There is a market for portable movies, or "UMD's" in this case. I, myself, being apart of this minority. I am probably home 3 times a week, playing games or checking my e-mail or what-not. I'm always away doing SOMETHING, from shows, to friends to the random coffee stop with a bunch of goonies, I'm ALWAYS out doing shit. Sometimes when I don't really have the time to sit on my ass for 2 hours and watch a movie, I like the idea that I can purchase that movie and watch it on the go.Quote:

For us "on the go" gamers, I will very much appreciate having a portable rendition of my favorite movie in UMD format.
Yes but the question is "how big is the market"? There's a market for vertical shooters too, but you don't see people making those.
If they used the mini DVDs that you can play on a regular DVD player, I'd be interested. But not an incompatible format.
I dont think the market is very big at all, but we're about to find out. At worst, nobody will pay attention to it and itll become MiniDisc 2.
So rather than buy a portable DVD player for $99 at Wal-Mart, you will purchase movies twice - once for your PSP and once for your DVD player?Quote:

Indeed and it's warmed me up a little more to buying a U.S. model. Let's hope SCEA cust support follows suit (if needed)Quote:

Exactly; sometimes price isnt everything. Especially when it comes to consumer electronics (and Sony knows this). Id bet dollars-to-doughnuts (HEH) that the PSP screen shits all over that $99 portably DVD player you can get in Wal-Mart. Theyre not even close.
While on the subject of movies on UMD, Sony also has said that they were looking into a UMD movie player that you could hook up to your television.
But, for people like myself who are away from their house more often than actually in their house, I'd probably just buy the movie on UMD format and skip out on the DVD copy.
I want a PSP, so why wouldn't I buy films for the more convenient format for me?
May not make sense to you, but it's crystal clear to me.
Have you seen these 99 dollar portable players. They are just as wide and long as the PSP screen.Quote:

Japanese people liked MD, because it provided an honest improvement above what existed before it. (Cassette.) So far as I can see, UMD doesn't provide that much.Quote:

DVD players are cheaper and more user friendly. UMD movies will be $20 minimum. Why not buy the same movie at the same price or less instead of buying one for home and anothermore expensive version on the go. Many people have told me to rip movies to Memory sticks instead. Then I saw the price of a memory stick and that is just as much of a scam.I could buy a 3rd party 1 gig stick that will cost between $75-$150 bucks and then rip it to a stick. Well most movies are 500+ mb and I doubt I could hold a really good movie libary on less than one stick.
Their is the DS,GBASP,N-Gage etc. handhelds out there. Nothing on the PSP line-up completely outshines anything on the GBA or DS line-up. Also the GBA 2 will be coming out in 2 years and I plan on saving money for that. It will be near impossible constantly having to buy UMDs and memory sticks to maintain my current and growing library of Mp3s list, large DVD libarary and if I buy the PSP $50 dollar Portable games.

Say you buy a PSP. You know it can play games, UMD movies, MP3s, MPG format video clips. It can even go online. Now, are you forced to use any of these features? No, you can buy it and just use it as a fancy little MP3 player. Or you can play video games on it AND use it as a fancy little MP3 player. Do you HAVE TO BUY UMD movies? No, you can buy the DVD and then buy a really low quality, poorly built $99 DVD player from fucking Wal-Mart. All consoles and handhelds come with things that some people WILL NOT USE and they accept that. Not everyone is going to buy all the touch-exclusive games for the DS, they might just get the 3D platformers and puzzle games.Quote:

Also, maybe you'll see some movies come out for the PSP and you'll think to yourself "OH man, I'll watch that all the time on my PSP because it's more convenient with it's smaller size, gorgeous screen and easier portability. It's also PSP exclusive, hot damn!" Certain situations arise and you WILL change your mind.
The PSP launch line-up kicks the DS' fucking ASS. Lumines, Ridge Racer, Wipeout Pure, Twisted Metal Head On, Metal Gear Acid, Death Jr., Mercury. Those are sure fire quality games. The DS launched with Super Mario 64 DS, Madden Football, Asphalt Racing, The Sims: Urbs, Feel the Magic and SpiderMan 2. Now, the DS also has: Zoo Keeper, Sprung, Mr. Driller and Wario Ware Touched. In the span of three months, the DS now has 11 games. The PSP will not only surpass the DS in quantity, but also quality of games in the first two months. I have a DS and I love it, but the PSP right now has a much, MUCH better line up of games and future game releases.
And don't drag the GBA 2 into this. We know nothing about that, and for all you know it could cost $300 and use some useless video format such as UMDs and you'll gush all over that like the fanboy you are.
"Lumines, Ridge Racer, Wipeout Pure, Twisted Metal Head On, Metal Gear Acid, Death Jr., Mercury. Those are sure fire quality games."
Um...OK Nostradamus
Average? I'm hard pressed to believe that you haven't quite done your research. The PSP has been said... has been said to have better playback quality than the iPod in most respects. How true this is, I do not know, but this has been widely known for the better part of the PSP's launch. Check the GAF boards. There are raving lunatics on that board that will defend the playback quality on the PSP to the death. Apparently, people on GAF do not settle for "average".Quote:

You have a link to show the Ipod ability is inferior to the PSPs? I have not seen read or seen one report that claims the PSP has the best quality mp3 playback on the market. The Ipod Shuffle may not appeal to you ,but the randomness is very appealing to many people. How come a random button is basically mandatory in every CD Player? People enjoy the randomness.Quote:

The quality of the PSP movie playback is great. The cost of maintaining a decent at best library when your are constantly buying $150 sticks to put 2 or maybe 3 movies on it is the killer for them.
Their are other handhelds out there with games worth owning. The DS has a great line-up coming out. The GBA still has a few great games worth waiting for this year. I'm not saying the PSP is bad, but I don't believe it is al that good. It's not going to raise handheld gaming out of any ghetto( Haha). Look at the japanese sales chart for the spots PSP games got on it when it first came out. The weren't impressive. To me it's really not worth $250 bucks especially when that extra 50 bucks goes to what? a carrying case, a wriststrap?

When I paid off my preorder for the PSP, I got impatient, so I bought an SP to tide me over. I'm enjoying the hell out of The Minish Cap.

You have to have a link to know that the Ipod ability is inferior to the PSP's? You're a dumbass. And I'll say it again - commas come AFTER the space, not before.Quote:
