The "Being Unemployed Sucks" Thread

Soon after Korly announced his unemployment, I received the layoff stick from Best Buy. I hate that stick.
Never applied for unemployment because I thought I'd find something in a few weeks. A month and a half later, I've still got nothing. Applied EVERYWHERE. This, of course, happens during a semester where I barely have any work to do. Fun! All I've been doing is bothering TrialSword, playing Halo 2, and attempting to whittle down the time-honored "pile of shame." I'm still bored, regardless.
Now, share some unemployment stories. Do it!
...though, if someone could direct me to the NY unemployment website, that would also be appreciated.

I've been unemployed my whole life.[/TROLLING]

I was unemployed for only a few weeks when I got out of the USMC and my dad (whom I don't live with and don't depend on for anything) said to me "Matt, get a fucking job." I had to move out of my moms house and in with somebody else to get the job I was depending on but I got it, 6 months later I'm hating it but it pays the bills so I can't complain.

You have my condolonces.

I was unemployed for a year once. I had waaaay too much free time.

I've been unemployed since August 2003...

It sucks. Well the first couple of months were fun since I was living off of my savings. But now it sucks hardcore. I could get a low paying fast food job but I haven't gotten that desperate yet. There’s a new Home Depot opening here in a month so maybe I’ll get work there. The worst thing is not getting a job because they say I’m “overqualified” for anything under management at retail. That’s what I get for having a kick ass job for years and going back to school and not having time for a full-time manager’s position.

My friend was unemployed for the duration of his unemployment checks.

He told me if he went out to get a minimum wage job, it would pay less than the unemployment checks he was recieving. Made sense I guess.

I was without work for the first 9 and 1/2 months of 2004. At first it wasn't to bad till summer kicked in the BOREDEM sucked!

Today I also got the pink slip at least they were nice enough to let me work through the shitty storm on to next friday. (fuck you AAA)

Funny thing with me also McDonalds and Burger king both turned me down for being over qualified, I'm to the point I don't show shitty jobs my resume. I just apply.

I was unemployed for about 6 months after I was laid off at VGD. It was kind of cool for a few weeks... but I quickly started to get bored thereafter. While it was nice to get the free check from Unemployment every two weeks, I would definitely not want to do it again.

No, the unemployment checks back up whatever you make at a certain job. For example I get close to $1000 a month from unemployment, then I got a crappy retail job at a videogame store, where I make maybe $400 a month, so unemployment backs that up by paying me $300 every two weeks - I only get this for a year so come July, the unemployment goes 'Bye-Bye'.

I think it's worth noting that, aside from the money, being employed generally sucks too.

Yeah, but being unemployed is major boredom. You can only play videogames for so many hours a day before you start to go stir crazy.

Interesting.

As a sidenote, he really fell in love with Xbox live during that period.

Up until I moved here, the longest I'd ever been unemployed was 2-3 weeks while my band toured. Upon moving here, after 2 broke ass months I finally got a job waiting tables at a BUFFET restaraunt, then finally got on at a printer(decent money, but not for my experience). After being forced to leave that job due to an allergic reaction to some of the chemicals, I started managing a coffee shop, then realized I could make as much money just going to school and getting a PELL grant. Unemployment rocks!!!

Lol yes. I killed alot of time on FFXI but I was hating that game a month into it. So I would just leave the house and walk around or got to stores and businesses asking if they needed help, cuz the news paper always has the same damn employers hiring (that never hire me) after that I'd visit weed dealer and get back to FFXI at night. :link:

And the only reason why I dont just ride out on the unemployment checks alone( like my friends always ask me) is because I HATE applying for jobs and whoring myself out.I'd rather get a little job on the side to avoid applying at 12 jobs a month or whatever to validate my unemployment.

I wish I could feel that way about work, but I can't get motivated burning my life away so some workaholic above me who doesn't feel the need to see his family or have real friends can make money from my tireless dedication to marketing widgets or performing financial transactions or whatever.

By and large, there are only a few jobs I don't consider utterly trivial and meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

You have to be fired to collect unemployment, right? I ask because I REALLY need a lot of free time to do all sorts of stuff and I desperately have to get the fuck out my job right now. I'm at the point where I'm testing just how much I can directly swear to customers and get away with it (my current best is to tell entire groups to "Fuck off and never come back!") and I have yet to get in trouble or have anyone complain about me.

If the pay is enough to cover my bills and required expenses then I'll gladly move to unemployment for at least a few months, because I need the time off. It's like half of what you normally made, right?

Depends on what your bills are.
It really depends on where you are and the type of agreement you have with an employer, but you do usually have to get fired. As to the money, you get a percentage of what you made the prior year as far as I know.
Yeah, if you are at a job like that(I've been there many times, I know how it is), you really aren't doing anyone a favor by staying. Remember, if you just decide to leave, oh, 4 hours early to go find a new job, and they FIRE you for it, well there you go. But I'd say just quit. I played that game too, and I think it's better to just walk away- and you can stretch money farther than you think, because you don't spend nearly as much without a job.

I could probably disappear for a week, come back and make up some random excuse and they wouldn't fire me. They wouldn't be happy about it but they wouldn't fire me, either. The place I work at can be laughably hard to get away from, I was frowned on for a while because I was routinely three hours late. That was a couple years ago and I still haven't had any punishment for anything I've done.

I was unemployed for about a good 3 months
I applied for about 42 jobs & got interviews with more then half of them
even though I had good experience, there was just too much ppl applying for those positions

but had to settle for some crappy retail job at the end, unless I wanted to keep searchin' :yuck:

I remember I wished & prayed way back when I was in School to just have all the days off & enjoy being at home, damn I was wrong

right now I got two jobs & trying to save up to get a new car & for College

here's a tip, try looking for a part time job, it's easier to get & a good balance between doing something & still having free time untill you get something better

Y'know, now that I think about, I can't think of a time anyone I know has gotten one of the jobs unemployment sends you to apply at, or any of the ones listed in the ESC for that matter. Not once. Anyone want to further support or invalidate my thesis?

Yup, I've been there. After a while, I just couldn't take anymore. I would just show up whenever I felt like it. Once I called in and told them I wasn't coming to work that day because I decided to go get a tattoo instead. Still, they didn't fire me.
Still, I think I'll be homeless before working such banal jobs again. It's almost like you have to choose between financial or mental stability. I chose mental, but my finances have turned out okay, after the initial kinks. There's a great book called "Unjobbing" that I recommend to you.

I worked at a lot of Delis during my college years. They're always hiring, and they almost always pay off the books. Try some.

I was unemployed for 9 months in 2003, and in all honesty, it was the best time of my life. Did nothing, sponged money off my parents, managed to get drunk every weekend, it was bliss. I still miss the old sleep pattern of going to bed at 4:30 and waking up at 2:30.

Yeah, I never understand the concept of "having too much free time." You can never have enough.

I mean, it really boggles my mind that there are people out there that'd rather be working. I mean, to make cash to pay the bills, sure, I understand that. But the desire for a job simply to fill up the hours of the day? You can't hink of ANYTHING better to do? I don't get that shit.

Some people are more active when they have an activity to do .... and then are lazier when there is less to do.

I get more done on days I work (around the house, working out, etc) then on weekends (I sleep in til 10am, then laze around the house the rest of the day).

Im going full time to school and my parents said they were going to stop sending me money since they said it seemed to them i just pissed it away and had too much free time, so being that im in school in nyc where everything is so fucking expensive i had to get a crappy job at starbucks on top of full time school schedule, being employed sucks right now, i would kill to be unemployed again. :mad:

The longest I was ever unemployed was from my birthday(Yes I got kicked out of my job on my birthday) in April to September back in 2003.

Oh man it was horrific. I hate looking for work. Over that time I ended up doing jobs like Telemarketing and [Al Bundy]selling women's shoes[/Al Bundy]. And yeah being overqualified is shit. I mean..I have a COMMUNITY COLLEGE degree..Come the fuck on.

Granted with my current schedule I have little to no free time but eh..If I do away with stupid things like "studying" I can sit down and rack up a few hours of gaming.

I was unemployed the first 6 months of 2003. I enjoyed it the first 2 months, but then the fact that I wasn't employed or in school made me feel like a bum. I applyed at numerous jobs, but either never heard back or their were too many qualified people who applied before me. Its ironic, in a way, in that I withdrew from my current school for the rest of the semester, but I still have my job, and I still feel like I'm wasting away. I mis going to class and actually learning and whatnot.

Makes sense. I'm not one of those people, however. On my days off, if I haven't been out to 3AM the night before, I still get up by 9AM or so and try to fit as much into my day as possible.

I actually had a job working a a comic book/card shop from 12-16. Pretty cool the guy had no idea about comics, so i came in one day and he offered me some after school work. He paid me for shit (like 3 bucks an hour), but he gave me free stuff (which is what i woulda spent my money on anyways). The crazy thing was he we leave me running the store by myself for hours at a time with no supervision. I would never let some 12 year old punk watch my business.

and every day, YOU HAD TO CUT DOWN A TREE in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, with a butter knife, and every night THE TREE WOULD GROW BACK.

Plus we all live in Texas, what the hell is snow?

Anyway, I was laid off from my city job because of financial crisis in back in May 2003. What was interesting was that my last week of work coincided with a vacation period I requested months before (I was going to E3 2003), so it was odd playing Steel Batallion in the Capcom booth knowing that I was being paid vacation time but not having a job when I came back.

Being unemployed was boring as hell, and it took some time before I managed to pick up part-time work around November and December of that year*. Thankfully, I finally landed full-time work March 2004. I'm still working at that job, and next month will be my one-year anniversary.

To those of you looking for work, construct some good resumes, know how to write a cover letter that is specfically tailored to the job you are applying, and network with as many people as possible. Most jobs aren't advertised, and the only way you can apply to them is if someone you know tells you about them (that's how I got my part-time work). If you live near a major city, hit Craig's List. That's how I got my full-time job.

*PROTIP: You can still work a part-time job and collect unemployment checks (at least in New York state). For every eight hours you work, you have to subtract one work day from the answer to the question, "How many work days this week did you spend looking for work?" (max. number is 5) when you file for your weekly unemployment check.

It's really not that hard to find a job if you have good social skills, and I don't think I've ever seen anybody be turned down from a fast food restaurant for being over qualified for the job. Has anyone else been turned down from a job for being overqualified? Because it sounds like b.s. nonsense.

Anyway, all the good jobs take connections to get.

I could never work like you guys, from a crummy Home Depot or retail job for the rest of my life. It's absolutely fine and dandy if you're putting yourself through school or looking for your big career path, since that's all the time you have available to dedicate to a job. But if you're working home depot full-time you obviously made some poor decisions or are making poor decisions.

Of course, some people are just unlucky, but everybody says they're the unlucky one so you can never tell.

Thats you, not me. School full time with 18 credits is enough work for me without working a job also, i have nothing against working but on top of 18 credits of a hard major, no thanks.

I had a friend whose father was not allowed to work at a 7-11 during the summer because he was overqualified (he was a school teacher in MD, highly underpaid and could not secure one of the slots as a summer school teacher). I was let go from an engineering job because when it came time for them to negotiate pay with me, they said that they couldn't afford to pay me what I need to live, and that they needed someone with less experience and education who was willing to work cheaper.

Get a job in sales, making commission. If you become a good salesman you can end up making tons of money

I work retail, and am going to college right now, hopefuly I wont stay in retail forever, but look, NO ONE is satisfied working a job like retail or whatnot as a fulltime employment, and they already know it sucks and dont need people telling them so. But whats worse about retail is they can fire you anytime. Yes, any job can but in a real business, you get fired if they are laying people off or you did something really really wrong. In retail, they'll just fire you whether its based on not enough payroll hours, you're doing poor in sales (especially when it comes to sales, some have quotas), or whatever. Not to mention, you're expendable, so they can get rid of you and hire someone else who will work for less pay.

Sometimes the award will say, especially in education and medicine, that they must pay according to your qualifications. So sometimes it's a money issue.

Unemployment ain't that bad when your friends are in the same boat. That can lead to interesting events.

I'm not hardly unemployed anymore, but the work I do involves alot of physical stress and I don't know how I can stand the pain the way things are going. I mean it's nice having a paycheck, but if I can't have hands for doing anything (playing games for example), then what's the point?

On top of that, I'm trying to fill in weekends through a temp agency so I don't get tied up on a routine schedule.

That last year was a real bitch for me to live with, cause I was stuck in the middle of paying for a new car, keeping my rent and having to deal with a bad leg that put me out for a good couple of months. Suffice to say, both went bye-bye, I ended up moving in with my dad for awhile, and got the royal run around looking for a job that was at least worth staying at. I even had one job hauling lumber and my back was never in good condition for handling it, so the friend who got me in there was plenty pissed when he got word I couldn't handle it. I've tried repeated times to get checks from the state again, but my funds were up and at that point is where I decided to leave the area. (midwest WI can go streight to hell)

I've been unemployed for like 2 years now. Apparently there's not a whole lot of unfilled openings for inexperienced 3D modellers. Go figure.

I'm so sick of sitting at home all day. I've done nothing but play WoW for the last 3 months. I really need to get out.

Hopefully, though, I'll be a tester at EA soon. Interview's in 2 weeks. Wish me luck.

If you want a job as a security guard, let me know. I can get the number for your location. Starting pay is about $10 to as much as $30 (depends on contract with company). All depends on your qualification and experience. Been in the army, law enforcement, navy, etc. you'll get paid more. Have a gun license, fire safety, CPR, etc. same thing also.

Part time and Full time are available. Ive been working for them for the past 3 years. This is just a cheesy way of getting money. Go into work, wear the uniform that is supplied, fill out a daily report (journal) and go home. Get your paycheck every Friday and start the new week again. You really dont do much..its mostly either at the front desk logging people in, command center monitoring the monitors, patrol, loading dock, lobby, parking lot booth, etc. All depends on location and where client wants guards.

Background check is extensive. The higher ups are mostly retired FBI, CIA and law enforcements.

But.... you get to shoot people if they get all up in your face, right?

Also, I have two jobs and work every single goddamn day. Go get jobs you fuckin' bums!

I once had a temp job at an actuarial organization grading some of those tests. Judging from the success rate (only 25% of them passed), they're really fucking brutal. Good luck with those.

Speaking of temp jobs, that may be an option for some of you. It was really really easy. I just called them up, went in, took some MS Office tests, and boom, I was making $10 an hour doing grunt office work. If you don't like your current assignment, you just call the agent office and have them send you elsewhere. Half the time I was just running copies and sending faxes. Simple, stress-free stuff.

Then again, depending on your temp agency and where you live, temping could be hell. I know someone who was sent to maintenence at a hospital (which means cleaning up blood and puke).

I've heard all the horror stories and it's not like I particularly love EA. But it's still a huge name to put on your resume down the line. If you can stick with EA, you can work anywhere in the game industry :D Besides, I think I'm gonna be on the NBA Live QA team... so it isn't so bad. At least I love basketball.

If things get really bad, I think I may be able to get a job testing at Next Level Games.

At this point though, I just really need something to get me off my ass.

Good luck. But, also, are you looking for work around your area or abroad? If you check out San Francisco or Vancouver or Seattle you'd have more luck. Also, attitude and follow-through is everything.

I have 2 internships are the current moment in time, and I got them both by phoning, sending follow-up letters. The second one took a week to get back to me, and I sent them a letter asking them if I was hired or not (i was polite about it) and they told me that they wanted me to come down the following Wednesday to get used to the place.

In college right now full time student. Me and my friends at my current job "Interstate Batteries" requested to only go to work 2 days out of the work week this semester and maybe on weekends if the store is open. They where cool about it, concidering we are all in college. But my friends think since our old head manager left we might be getting the boot by the head guy as soon as he finds more help. I told them we should be fine till at least the summer.

Anyway, the only reason I got a job honestly was because of my girlfriend. I felt like I should have money to pay for us to go out , so her parents dont think I'm a bumb. Etc , Etc. Now that we are not together I'm just like man I would rather get an internship or work at a more laid back place with cool people to work around.

Working sucks and not working sucks at certain points is what I've come to see, unless you have a good job or good people to work with.
