I know the series only from a scant few screenshots and some third-party opinions but it does show promise. But I just don't know if I can make time for another 60 plus hour game anymore.

CareerSoft is a Japanese company (used to be Masaya, recently gobbled up by Atlus) which created Langrisser. Langrisser is a game that began I believe on the MegaDrive and was released here for the Genesis under the name "Warsong" (or something like that... ) Two Langrissers were released for the MD, and then Der Langrisser was released for the PC FX. Langrisser 3-5 appeared on the Sega Saturn, and later they rereleased Langrisser 1+2 collection for the SS, ported Langrisser IV and V to the PSX. And finally, released the Langrisser Tribute for the SS, which is I-V + goodies. Langrisser is an SRPG game which is kind of like Advance Wars now that I think about it.
Anyway... CareerSoft made a game called Growlanser for the PSX, which was more like a traditional RPG, but with a battle system that is most like Grandia's. The major difference is, you could interrupt and change your command at any time, so in a way it's semi-real-time. But when you input commands, all the action freezes, like Grandia. They later made Growlanser II and III for the PS2, and that's kinda the end of story.
Growlanser doesn't have random battles but Grow II and III do, which was a turn off for me. I've not played Grow II + III, but I hear it's only some of the battles. Other battles are scripted. One major thing for the Growlanser (and Langrisser) games is character designer, Urushihara Satoshi. If you've seen Plastic Little, you will know what to expect.
But yeah, as for Growlanser, I really enjoyed what I've played of it. I hear Grow II is a little disappointing but Grow III is good.
Ah, I've seen pics of Langrisser before in Gamers Republic. I think I've seen Plastic Little too. Thanks!
