I like how they said that the game was sweeping Japan... it sold 300,000 copies.
But a game like San Andreas or Halo 2 drop a million first day and Nintendo is convinced those companies have it all wrong.

That article was interesting until it started trying to compare Nintendogs to an RPG. In an RPG--and in pretty much every video game--you do stuff to make progress. You power up your character so you can defeat other characters and progress further through the game, moving towards a goal. I believe Nintendogs has no ultimate goal and you do the things in the game just for the fun of doing them. You train your dog so that you can play with it...and that's it. You win a dog brush so that you have a dog brush to add to your collection, not to help you progress through the game.
It makes a lot more sense to compare Nintendogs to other handheld games, not console games. They've shipped half a million units in Japan alone, thats easily more than anything on the PSP. Plus Nintendogs is an original IP, the DS userbase is small at this point, and its outsold the GTA and Halo games in the only region its been released in so far. Nintendogs is a hit of noteworthy proportions. And its not like people have ignored the impact of GTA and Halo.Quote:

I haven't really played the game myself outside of a couple minutes messing around with it, but I asked our handheld guy (Craig) if there was any goals and he said no. The only semblance of a goal is in the dog competitions, but they're just there as something to do with your dog.Quote:

You unlock the other breeds from other versions as you gain more trainer points. That's an incentive to do stuff with your dog, assuming you have any interest in any of the others. Other than that, no, there really isn't a goal. It's definitely still fun to play with, though.Quote:

There is a nifty little trade in deal for any of the versions of this game at EB. Any three GBA carts (no box or instructions needed) = a shiny new copy of Nintendogs.
I traded in Denki Blocks, the Kelly Slater surfing game and the Dr. Seuss Three Eggs and Ham game for a paid pre-ordered copy of the Labrador version. As always YMMV from store to store. :D
Pokemon sold millions of copies.Quote:

Not bad at all, but certainly not a Pokemon-level phenomenon. Hell, Pokemon Emerald, a shitty rehash, has sold 1.5 million in Japan.
