Okay you have a dog sim, but how about a ninja dog sim?(Imagine Yamato from Shadow Dancer). They could have made it like Ecco the Dolphin where the dog saves the world from Aliens.
If it had an Atlantis level I'd have strangled the next puppy I saw.
"solid" is an understatement. *If* these sales are true(which I'm having a pretty hard time believing that they are), with a userbase of only 2 million, this is downright incredible. Not to mention the only original IP that wasn't a sequel or of an established franchise to reach 1 million in sales in Japan in the past 6 or 7 years was Onimusha.... With sales like this, Nintendogs is well on it's way to breaking that drought. The 1st million seller that was an original IP in like 4 or 5 years...Quote:

Why, hello Nintendogs 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Golden Retrievers = Nintendogs Gold edition!
Each version has all the puppies, the version you choose just decides what puppies you start off with. You can buy the other puppies later on. So I doubt people are buying multiple versions, unless this information isn't well known...Quote:

edit: Missed the established franchise thingy..
And by "dollar" I meant "unit"
That's certainly true here, but in Japan it's been a lot better. Meteos, Pac Pix, Kirby, etc... are already out over there... I think the whole puppy thing is appealing to a broad audience, probably to people that never even played games. If Nintendo markets this right it could be the killer app they need for the DS in Japan, in Japan it's really hard to have pets because of the extra costs and the limited space they already have.... Now if this can catch on with the rest of the world remains to be seen....Quote:

Who cares how many units this sold? You can tickle puppies in it.
That is awesome.
Try again.. Harder.Quote:

I still can't believe the new "killer app" for the DS is a puppy simulator. I'll definately pick it up simply because I love puppies, and for some reason I havn't sold my DS yet. But seriously, a puppy simulator.
There's a great analysis of this game uphere.
There's some spelling errors and for anyone who's taken comp. sci, or maybe even psychology, a lot of the points are obvious, but it's still a good read.
Thanks for that link, some of the stuff described in it makes me want to play this now.
Yeah, the link makes me want it even though I don't like puppies (kittens > puppies > j00).
I'm pretty sure there's no such word as "veminent" though. ;)
That link makes me hate pretentious game designers.
The link makes me realize that Nintendo nailed a concept that is perfect for Japan, but not a country where like 60% of people own pets. Same idea as Tamagotchi, which kinda fell flat here. Im really not surprised that the game got a 40/40 in Famitsu.
Tamagotchi did not fall flat here. You couldn't even get one when they first came out, they were always sold out.Quote:

Well, logically, if they were always sold out when they first came out here then plenty of people managed to get them when they first came out.Quote:

I like how they said that the game was sweeping Japan... it sold 300,000 copies.
But a game like San Andreas or Halo 2 drop a million first day and Nintendo is convinced those companies have it all wrong.
That article was interesting until it started trying to compare Nintendogs to an RPG. In an RPG--and in pretty much every video game--you do stuff to make progress. You power up your character so you can defeat other characters and progress further through the game, moving towards a goal. I believe Nintendogs has no ultimate goal and you do the things in the game just for the fun of doing them. You train your dog so that you can play with it...and that's it. You win a dog brush so that you have a dog brush to add to your collection, not to help you progress through the game.
It makes a lot more sense to compare Nintendogs to other handheld games, not console games. They've shipped half a million units in Japan alone, thats easily more than anything on the PSP. Plus Nintendogs is an original IP, the DS userbase is small at this point, and its outsold the GTA and Halo games in the only region its been released in so far. Nintendogs is a hit of noteworthy proportions. And its not like people have ignored the impact of GTA and Halo.Quote:

I haven't really played the game myself outside of a couple minutes messing around with it, but I asked our handheld guy (Craig) if there was any goals and he said no. The only semblance of a goal is in the dog competitions, but they're just there as something to do with your dog.Quote:

Not bad at all, but certainly not a Pokemon-level phenomenon. Hell, Pokemon Emerald, a shitty rehash, has sold 1.5 million in Japan.
I put down my pre-order for the Chihuahua version last night. For as much as I know I'm going to hate the stigma around owning the Chihuahua version, I want my god damned Yorkshire Terrier.
When Pokemon red and blue first came out they sold weakly. Eventually the sales built up even though it took months for it to become as huge force.Quote:

Nintendo at E3 did a great job of fooling stupid Westerners that it was the second coming of Pokemon, though.

You know you can eventually unlock all the breeds in every game, right? I think the only exclusive things are accessories for the dogs (hats etc). That being said, I think I am going to pick up the Dachshund version. Just look:Quote:

It's actually 4 GBA games, with about 10 titles excluded. You need a coupon from some marketing site called streetwise to get the 3-games-no-exclusions deal, and apparently getting the damn thing is all but impossible. A lot of stores misinterpreted the email announcing the deal, so you could get the better deal sans coupon for several days... but of course it was too late by the time I got wind of it. :( Ah well, between my dad, my sister and myself we still had enough worthless old crap to get two copies (Labrador for the Corgi for me, Chihuahua for my sister).Quote:

I really want the Pug, but that's the only dog I want from that particular version. =[ *sigh* I guess I'll get the Chihuahua Nintendogs.
This is the first game my girlfriend has been interested in since Super Mario World on SNES.
We will be getting the one with Min Pin. (thats how I got her to let me buy a DS)
9.1 from Gamespot.

Go to CompUSA where they are $25. Don't be a stupid ass and go to EB.
I'm planning on going to Best Buy with the CompUSA ad to see if they match it and give the additional 10% or whatever it is off of that.Quote:

Good call.
BB has it for $30 + free $5 gift card. So essentially it's the same price either way.Quote:

I can see me putting a LOT of time into this.
Last I checked, Best Buy no longer had the $5 coupons for anything but Xbox or PS2 games. :( Besides, if they price match then it's an additional 10% off. :DQuote:

There are like 5 or so dogs per version that you can get from the start. All versions allow you to get all dogs eventually, but you can only start from a select few.Quote:

In short, it's Pokemon all over again.
Heh. Didn't know about the exclusive stuff...just the dogs.
Really liking this so far. :) It's kind of akward yelling into the DS, but I can't help but sit with a big grin on my face as I play. :)
I LOVE MY PUPPY!! <3<3

I heard about this back when, and thought it would be hilariously bad. Now I find myself completely wanting this (Dachshund version, go huskies) and am having problems admitting that. It seems so... I don't know, cutsey and shit, but I've seen a ton of middle-aged men renting it at Blockbuster and buying it, kind of surprises me.
Now what the hell is wrong with that?Quote:

But we'll see. I frequently grow to love things after generous exposure.
Train your puppy for the disc throwing competition, then go conquer those. Makes it a bit more gamey.
No, I think I have a problem liking games that are considered girly, is all. It's not a matter of seeming cool or anything.
And hey, Compass, what version did you buy?
My friend bought a DS for this and Advance Wars.
I'm tempted but I'll have to hold till Animal Crossing.
do bigger puppies have bigger poops? I'm unhappy with my yorkies poop size.
Well there's your answer, you can't get into it because you worship satanQuote:

i just got the daschund version of the game, and when im asked to name my dog by speaking to the mic, i get a message saying "he/she heard you", then game proceeds to asking me to name my dog agian, and again, and again, and again, and agian, and again, and again!!!!!!! WTF? it's like the game is stuck in a loop!
i deleted my game and and picked another dog, and it still did the same thing. :bang:
Just keep doing it. It'll end eventually. They did put a few too many in there, though.
Teaching them tricks is the same, they learn through repetition.
*phew* i thought my game was fucked up. I take it they did it so that the DS recognizes your name depending on how you pronounce the name.
It's just like all the efforts to teach your dog stuff in the game. The dog doesn't learn right away. Takes a lot of repetition.Quote:

My 1up blog has about 4 posts already on the Nintendogs subject. . so I think it's fair to say that I love this game a bit too much.
This morning I met a guy on the train with a Boxer even. This game is freakin' everywhere and it's awesome :D
My dog Scruffy kicked ass at the Obedience Competition yesterday. He is horrible at the Agility Course, he goes into the tunnel then whimpers and gets stuck half way through. Also, he brought me a stick while out on a walk, but when I throw it he is scared to death of it. What a silly puppy!
My dog can now do back flips :) she's awesome. She rocks at the disc competitions as well
My dog, Indiana, is every person in this thread's new Puppy Overlord.
He owns your dog for free.
My little Bubba is the shit at the Agility Course. He placed first on his first run through. And only went to the gym once to practice. But he's awful so far at the disc competition.Quote:
