I literally scanned through the list four or five times, confounded by the absence of Planescape: Torment. I made sure. It really isn't there.

Thief is missing in action as well. No The Longest Journey either and now I'm ready to nibble my own brain out.

I'm actually not usually one to overreact to lists such as these. We all have our own tastes, etc. etc. But Christ, how can I take their reviews seriously after this? These guys are telling me what I should be playing!? Their own highest rated game ever (tying with Half-Life 2 at 98%), Alpha Centauri, is nowhere to be found! Doom 3, rated higher than Far Cry (#18 on this list) less than a year ago, now all the sudden can't even crack the top 50?

What is going on here.

Sometimes initial ratings aren't indicitive of the actual quality of the product.

I mean... there's no way Doom 3 should be on that list, no matter what score it originally got.

PC Gamer has really sunk. Back when Gary Whitta was the EIC the mag was probably the best out there - witty, informed, and classy. Just about the PC equivalent to Next Generation (along with Computer Games Strategy Plus, which is now just Computer Games and still excellent). Now, with that Rob guy there its just trash. Its like a low-grade EGM.

That said, these top 50 lists they do have always sucked ass. The fact that they dont put Alpha Centauri in the top 50 even though they gave it a 98% should show you how shitty their word is.

There is no way, no fucking way, that Duke Nukem 3D is the 15th best PC game ever. Only the first third of singleplayer is any good. Neverwinter Nights is also in no way shape or form one of the 50 best PC games ever - the Aurora engine is amazing for creation but the game itself is mediocre and sloppy.

My recommendation is just to stop reading PC Gamer. They are clueless.

Alpha Centauri got the shaft because the majority of PC gamers are action whores who only play FPSes. It certainly deserves to be on the list. As for Doom 3... yes perhaps it doesnt deserve to be on the list but they shouldnt be giving it 96% or whatever and putting it on last year's list only to make it dissapear the next one. Its sloppy and makes your mag look unprofessional and unreliable.

Half-Life 1 above Half-Life 2? That makes no sense unless they're including all the mods which they shouldn't. Even still, Half-Life 2 should be above it.

No... HL1 is still the better game.

I never thought HL1 by itself was actually all that great...sure fun and awesome but the story was so damn weak (I don't care what you say about that immersion shit) and the gameplay was a lot of the same with some twists thrown in to make it seem fresh.

I still think it was an awesome game and the mods are definately a seller but I had some real fucking fun playing HL2 (despite the fact I'm only 10% into the game, I watched my friend play through it though).
