I just beat it and I'm pretty disappointed at the final stages.
First off, why do so many developers feel that alien planets or otherworldy areas have to be jumping puzzles? They'll give an entire game which is primarily ground-based and suddenly when you leave Earth or shift planes or whatever everything suddenly reverts back to 8-bit logic where reality is a blantantly convienent series of platforms and beams.
The final battles sucked. All of them. The Hydra and the Minotaur were fucking sweet, both of those were awesome bosses that conveyed scale really well and just plain felt like you were taking on huge mythical creatures. Then I got to Ares and was presented with a normal battle - the exact same kind I'd been doing for the last 10+ hours - only with lesser powers. Whee. The whole time I was playing I was expecting something really fucking kickass to come, and when Pandora's Box was stolen I figured it'd be something like he would be wearing the box as a necklace and you would have to fight your way up him. Maybe there'd be a cliff you were standing on and he'd punch the rock, whereupon you'd have to run up his arm, battling to stay on, breaking off his armor and using the mini-games to wear him down, until finally you'd have access to the box and would unleash it right on him. Something that really showed off just how damned ENOURMOUS Ares is and a real god-like battle.
But no. Pandora's Box, the power of the Gods, just makes Kratos bigger. Whoopdie-fucking-shit. The true power of the box that damned humanity is a a living piece of e-mail spam. And on top of that his attacks are retarded, the only reason he poses any danger is because he's got an unblockable that he can do at almost any time which can be comboed up to like five times. Then there's the beauty which is how the final battle has probably the worst camera of the game, it's like all of a sudden they had no idea how to present the basic concept of two people on screen. I'd be fighting with the camera displaying a 2D version of a 3D plane with Kratos totally hidden because Ares is blocking my entire view, thus giving me no idea how far I was and making it a lot harder to read his animations.
And let's not get into the retarded protect mission.
Idiotic platforming aside, this was a pretty good game up until they totally dropped the ball at the end and forgot they were working on something kickass, and somehow mixed it up with the final area of some random C-rate action game. It's like right at the end they suddenly decided to hand it over to the developers of Kingdom Hearts or something.
Some really good work, guys, but better luck next time on finishing the product.
At least the unlocked videos were cool.
