The Devil May Cry series has never been able to throw together an even remotely decent story, nor a passable way of presenting the story they do have. There's no pacing, no build-up, nothing.

God of War has all those; great story, great presentation, and lots of good foreshadowing.

If anything, they share the problems of cheap deaths and instances of bad camera, but God of War is just simply a better game. It took DMC three games to get to where it is now, and God of War jumped leagues beyond it its first time at bat.

I agree, but story isn't very important to DMC anyway. No one complained that Bad Dudes has a bad story.

God of War's only cheap deaths are with the retarded platforming that's mixed in with the solid combat. I have not died once to enemies in the game, and that includes bosses so far.

And I don't see what matters how long it took Capcom to make DMC3 what it is.

That's a completely inapplicable example. Back then every game had a bad story and no one complained because there was no alternative. Nowadays we have MGS, Eternal Darkness, Silent Hill, etc. that present these grand sweeping tales to us that enhance the gameplay. They've become the standard. By your reckoning it'd be okay to put out Pong! for 50 bucks retail because, "no one complained about it" back in the 80s.

Did you bring this up only so you could brag about not dying? Because it seems like it doesn't really further the discussion. Both games have cheap deaths, that's it.

Look how much MGS changed from the original all the way to Snake Eater. You don't see that kind of innovation or experimentation in DMC, you don't even see a concerted effort to eliminate the problems. Over a three game period that's pretty disappointing.

A Stylish Action game doesn't need a gripping (or even coherent) storyline. I don't care if the DMC story is dumb as balls, that game is still fantastic. Just started the 3rd one last night so I can't really comment on it, but you can jump on demons and surf them AND SHOOT. Story what?

Not all games need a great story. 99% of racing games have zero story. Even God of War's story is only "decent"--it's nowhere near any of the titles you mentioned, but I wouldn't hold that against it.

Again, that may be something to bash Capcom about, but it doesn't really have any bearing on the quality of Devil May Cry 3. DMC3 is what it is. If it was called something else, it'd still be what it is, and still be arguably better than God of War. Yeah, it's definitely commendable that Sony was able to whip up a totally new IP and make it good. But that commendation doesn't add to God of War's quality.

Coming from anyone but the person who thought ZOE2 had a great story, that'd be a cut. Let me put it this way, the story in God of War made up for any other shortfalls it may have as an action game, which are decidedly few and minor.

Actually, it does. DMC isn't something else, it's the third game (Mzo read as: second) in a series. If this were a new IP it'd be noteworthy, but this is a formula Capcom has had for years now and done nothing as great as what they did with the first game (arguably) until now. Not only is God of War a new IP for Sony, it's an instant classic in the entire genre. That, for me anyway, puts it far above DMC3.
