The graphical style was quite different from the old Gradius games. It was, as Frogacuda said, much more mechanical than the older games in the series. There was nothing along the lines of a fire planet, an ice planet, a plant planet, a desert planet, etc. No gigantic snakes, huge plant bosses, or moai heads floating in space. The closest thing to any of that was the organic planet halfway through (which is also my favorite level). As far as style goes, it was closer to Treasure's other shooters than previous Gradius games.

And gameplay... I dunno. Something about the design of the levels felt off to me, even if I can't explain why. It's kind of like comparing Sonic 2 to Sonic Advance, where there's a clear difference in feel and quality but you can't explain what it is. I'd say it feels much more structured than previous Gradius games, and is almost closer to an R-Type game in that sense (or, well, previous Treasure shooters).

According to Treasure's recruitment website (http://www.treasure-inc.co.jp/job/job.html), they are currently looking to hire a programmer, a 3D graphics designer, and a 2D graphics designer. I don't know if this is for work on this gunstar game, or perhaps some other upcoming titles, but it's interesting, especially the 2D graphics designer position.

On a related note, I hope they release Project RSG 3 this year! It should be coming soon, as the first two P-RSGs were released about 3.5 years apart (7/1998 & 12/2001). Another 3.5 years since Ikaruga would be about May/June of this year. Hmm....

I don't know about RS-3, but I think a new shooter is a sure bet considering Treasure was listed as one of the developers signed on to the new Type X arcade hardware. Though Type X really seems like garbage from what I've been seeing. I'm not sure they wouldn't be better off staying with NAOMI.

Your like of the game makes me want to like it, but fact is, I hated it and nothing besides a brain wash or torture is going to convince me it was good. Mehbe only I think it, but Guardian Heroes Advance totally times 10 looks better than Astro Boy.

At the very least, a "developed by Treasure" tag doesnt mean the game is gonna be worth jack shit. Lets go over their lineup from the past few years:

Wario World - Solid, not spectacular.
Gradius V - pretty good shooter
Ikaruga - pretty good shooter
Astro Boy GBA - most like it
Guardian Heroes Advance - awful, shits on Guardian Heroes legacy.
Stretch Panic - absolutely one of the worst games ever made.

Four out of six aint bad, I guess.

I don't think you should comment too much on this game until you play it on a real GBA, prefereably on hard. It runs like shit stuck in mud on emulators for some reason, but it's not like that on real hardware.

I also don't like that everyone conveniently skips Ippo. It's like my favorite GBA game.

No it wasn't, "the perfect" guy clears it in like 1.05h, sure you could beat it faster with those fixated options but not that fast. And I fail to see why you would compare the two anyway. RS has one loop, be it 45 minutes or more, you could still get a top tier score in that amount of time. And you get a rewarding scoring system to keep you occupied too.
As it is now my record for GV is 2-2, I have to play more than one hour to even begin to break my own score. And I don't have the patience/time for that.

I'm inclined to agree, actually, I just felt the same way about Radiant. Ikaruga was the perfect length, though.
