That looks great. The character sprites are huge though.

I will be all over this.
I can't believe those shots are GBA screens.
Wow.
Wow, those screenshots excited my otherwise jaded attitude. Sure, it would have been better if this was made for the PSP, but if it is as good or better than Astro Boy GBA, then I don't care.
I'm really hoping it's good.
This will be Treasures 5th game on the GBA. It looks hot.
Yep, the large sprites and flat layout (and oh yeah, the new character) make me think the game might play a lot closer to Alien Soldier than Gunstar 1.Quote:

I was hoping for a console release instead of a GBA one but this still looks great so I can't complain. I just hope it's not a boss fest like Alien Soldier.
I just got done reading the story linked on click's page. YESSSS! And the same excellent, spritey art style as the first game. The GBA is officially IMHO now THE perfect followup to the SNES. Also, I now HAVE to get a GBA player for my Cube because of this. I look forward to gunning on the run and in the office, but I wanna see this beauty on a bigger screen too. :) I just hope it can live up to the unbelievable expectation and pressure put on it by the first game.Quote:

Goddamnit. im so sick of this portable gaming shit. release it on a freaking console already. it will sell. Why does 2d have to be reserved for portables now? It will do, and i will buy it, but it could be SO much more. Those sprites look too big too...
sob.
I am excited for this and all, but have to agree with Destro. I know it seems like a bigger risk for it being put on a Console in terms of it being 2D and stuff. But the audience is going to buy it either way and would rather it be the best looking it can be. Treasure and Sega both know that its going to be a Niche release, so why not do it the best they can? It must boil down to a cost thing, and the GBA would be much cheaper to develop for. But go for the gold, I mean really. Gunstar is their baby and they are short changing it.
Cheaper production costs. Better audience.Quote:

Now that the system has been officially named, I realize I was holding my breath for a PSP version. Hey, after 12 years I shouldn't be anything but estatic. I am.
Let's just hope Treasure can develop the follow up we all expect, and damn it, that we loyal fans deserve.
GBA? Thats lame.
And those pictures look stupid and shitty.

Looks sharp. I think Astroboy was a little cleaner looking, but this still looks great, and in keeping with the original's style.
HOLY SHIT!!! Play magazine's site finally went live?! 'Bout frikkin' time...
I find that more astounding than the fact that Treasure is doing sequels.Quote:

Unless it goes 3-D, I'd be nearly as surprised to see Bangai-O 2 on a console as I would to read that Treasure is developing The Revenge of Light Crusader.
Though it could be the DS's killer ap, I'm thinking the PSP could really blow the doors off the ol' Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh.
Bangaio would controll really well on the DS. Move with D-Pad, and just move the stick where you want to shoot.
Those screenshots make my pants tent.
"My pants are tight!"
Any chance we'll have another epic battle with Final Great Soldier, and his devistating Love Love Dancing?
We can only hope, along with the almighty Melon Bread.
I wonder if that drone who escaped whilst hiding in the barrel in the first game is still alive?

Many of Treasure's well-known and well-loved titles like Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, Sin & Punishment were all developed at the end of the system's life cycle. Someone else mentioned that Treasure has worked on 4 or five titles for the GBA. They're mastery of the system should bold well for all our itchy trigger fingers.
That second shot from the top looks to be the stuff boss battle dreams are made of.
They will surely pull of some great stuff on the old hardware but it's still a GBA. I put up my GBA on auction today, it's a nifty apparel but Advance Wars, Wario Ware and Mr Driller is the only stuff I have really enjoyed on it. I'm a sad panda after this announcement, I want 2d action on my console, not on something with sucky sound and a post-it sized screen.
I don't see anything wrong with the choice. It was questionable for AGH because GBA is such a step down from Saturn, but GBA's a healthy step up from Genny, and they should be able to stay true to the original and kick things up a notch on GBA.
I think it's a little disappointing that after almost 12 years Gunstar is getting a sequel on 16-bit hardware. This is probably the most wanted sequel Treasure has ever made. It's the franchise that put them on the map. I always expected if a Gunstar sequel was ever to be made it would go all out using current technology.
Still, I'm very thankful we're getting this game at all. I'm expecting it to kick ass anyway.
Maybe they could borrow the engine for the canned VectorMan game, slap on some Gunstar pixels and ship it on the PS2?
Bah. Itd be way better on the PSP. Putting this on GBA is wasting its potential right off the bat.Quote:

Arguable. If the GBA is powerful enough to pull off what they have in mind, then the rest is superficial. I'd rather it be on a system I have availible if that's the case.Quote:

This seems to be an intentionally oldschool design, and I think GBA is up to it.
They should aim higher, I'm with Neo, I wanted the be all end all run'n gun. Something that would just blow my socks off with lush 2d graphics. Something that finaly kicked Metal Slugs ass, or atleast something stylish in 2.5d ie not Contra SS. But it's better than nothing at all( crap, I used to be kinda proud that I didn't have to be a bottom feeder like Castlevania fans etc), but you can't be serious about something like complaints about the d-pad being superficial?Quote:

Anyone still remember why we didn't get AD&D on PS awhile back?
Having this game on the GBA is comforting for a few reasons:
1. You can play it on a TV or on a portable
2. Not many people own a PSP or DS at this point(myself included)
3. Treasure knows the GBA hardware quite well
Having the game in hi-res with dozens of enemies on screen at once would have been nice, but would any publisher have given Treasure the budget to make a fanboy's dream sequel to Gunstar Heroes? Not even SEGA is that dumb.
I'm just quoting that for future use. I'm quite glad it's on GBA, and if it does well, maybe an upgraded version will hit the DS or PSP. Or maybe they could do a Gunstar collection with an upgraded version and the original on a system at some point.Quote:

As for Sony not being keen on 2D for PSP- they are allowing Namco Museum for a summer release, so I think it'd be unfair for them to disallow a Gunstar Heroes port if Treasure wanted to do it.
Once the PSP really takes off, we need an upgraded port.
I don't think any specific format was mentioned although it was probably post-DC. The info was mentioned in an older thread.Quote:

A little coding can go a long way.
I'm a little worried about 2D games on the PSP. The slight LCD blurring is much more obvious on 60fps games, especially with 2D graphics. Play the Ridge Racer intro minigame to see what I mean.Quote:

If Gunstar Super Heroes was made for Gamecube then ok :-D No problem (Nintendo is very friendly for 2D playing games on its console (Ikaruga, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, etc)
BUT most likely it would have been made for ps2. And then its likely the game would either be 3D (in which case the GBA version would definitely be better) OR that it WOULD be 2D and THEN, it would come out in Japan for ps2, then be REJECTED by Sony Computer Entertainment of America because its a 2D game together with NOT being a compilation (anyone remember USA Metal Slug 3 on ps2? -_-)
No thanks :) a 2D version on Gamecube would have been nice, but barring that, roll on GBA version! :D
Oh and btw, anybody know if this is coming to the USA? Will Sega Publish it in the US also?
I wasn't even sure if they were still around, I think the last ESP game I picked up was Ikaruga. Speaking of Ikaruga, add Atari to the list :lol:Quote:

Sounds like we'll be seeing some rehashing of the Advance Guardian Heroes engine.
I think the homages could be really awesome, personally.
I do. I thought that was really cool, honestly. I love Sega's old superscaler stuff. How could anyone not?Quote:

I don't have a problem with this, as I'm sure Treasure will deliver another memorable and downright enjoyable game experience.
What I do have issue with is why bother paying homage to old Sega franchises?..
Oh, that's right, Sega's fronting the bill on this one...
I mean, I love the old Sega stuff as much as anyone, but let’s move on already. Sega has been trying to use some of their old properties to rekindle their fading status for almost the past 5 years. This shit's tired.
I don't know what you think constitutes a game engine. Are you referring to recycling little bits of graphics code to recreate effects from other games? And how would you judge wether or not they're doing that or not. I don't think that Astroboy used some generic flexible game creation "engine" like Unreal or something that can just be modified and rehashed by just popping in different parameters. They probably used some of the same utilities and such in level creation and scripting and the like, but in terms of the code for actually rendering what's going on on screen that's the GBA hardware doing that, and I don't know how you can say by looking at it that they're "obviously recycling code" based on what, the fact that it's a 2D game with scaling sprites? You're just talking straight out of your ass.Quote:

I'm pretty sure it was entirely Treasure's decision to pay homage to those games, and they probably did it because they were great games and Treasure likes them. Stop reading more into it. Do you honestly think Sega is forcing them to do it as some sort of product placement/advertising? Let's be real here.Quote:

That was the part of the game that made me happy and lovey.
I was looking at the clip and said, "Hey, that looks like the first level." Sure enough, the preview stated that the first level was redone in the game.
I would have been sad about no 2-player co-op, but then I realized that nobody plays 2-player co-op GBA games.
Looks good so far. I only hope it plays as well as the first, or else all that effort would have been in vain.
I approve!Quote:
