Small Guilty Gear XX Impressions
During my Sammy meeting we went from to the show floor to one of the meeting rooms because it was way too loud, and I couldn’t hear anyone at all (but I could sure as hell check out the BEAUTIFUL Mai and Millia booth babes!). So imagine my surprise when I was lead into the room and saw an arcade cabinet featuring Guilty Gear XX: Midnight Carnival. I couldn’t even keep my mind on the game I was supposed to check out (Lethal Skies, which was pretty decent too) because of the ominous cabinet before me. After the Lethal Skies demo, I just had to ask to play some Guilty Gear XX goodness, and luckily for me, they let me. The graphics on the Naomi-powered system was absolutely insane, with the expected high resolution characters and backgrounds that we’ve come to expect. While I regret not choosing one of the four new characters in the game, picking my old favourite Chipp allowed me to check out some of the new backgrounds and moves. For one thing, there’s a new button to the game, which is the Dust Attack (performed by pressing Slash and Hard Slash at the same time in GGX), as well as a new meter called the Burst meter. While the Dust Button wasn’t exactly the best thing in the world to add, the Burst Meter was definitely cool. The Burst meter allows you to “break” combos, much like in Rare’s Killer Instinct games. What’s really cool about the Burst is that you can actually use it when you’re not stuck in a combo. What this allows you to do is basically blow through your opponent’s attack so that you can knock them across the screen. While the backgrounds have only changed marginally, the entire front end of the game has been completely revamped with a high-tech look to it, and had my jaw dropping to the floor. Unfortunately for console gamers there are no plans right now to release Guilty Gear XX to any of the next-generation systems, but I wouldn’t doubt that it will sometime make it to the PS2 or another console.
