Wisdom Teeth

So, all week I've been coping with the pain of having a wisdom tooth break through. It seems like only 1 is actually finishing its little cycle and the rest aren't quite at that point yet.
Thing is, I woke up today and one side of my face is still hurting and of course the tooth is aswell. I dunno if it's because of the swollen side or what but when I smile my bottom jaw is not aligning itself properly. It's almost as if it's pulling to the side with the new tooth.

Has anyone had their teeth left in and gone through this?
I'm told it will go away if I just wait a bit longer.. but I just wanted to hear from some other people who might have had this.

PS: The Dentist told me I have enough room for them and they shouldn't come out. So I guess removing them and keeping them still result in pain.

I still have my wisdom teeth. It took a while for them to grow in. They'll grow a little and then stop. A few months later, they'll grow some more.

Yeah, mine are coming in in such a way were they wont need to be pulled.

It hurt for about a week or so, then they finaly broke the gumline.

My only problem is one isnt coming up very quickly and I have a bit of a hole back there that loves to trap food..

So when I smile, my jaws don't line up.

This will fix itself right? I'm assuming it's from the one side being sore/swollen.

I'm pissed off at my wisdom teeth. I went through braces as a kid and had my teeth straightened, but now my whole bottom grill is back to being fucked up once again. I want them removed just to spite them.

They've stopped hurting for the most part, although the one on the upper-left side of my face will occasionally cause me consistant headaches for an entire day.

I had braces too, and even with wisdom teeth removal, my teeth have been shifting all over the place for years now. My dentist told me wearing the retainer I had back then now will just fuck my teeth up worse and possibly lead to them falling out eventually, so I tossed it. I'm just afraid I'll get that gap in my front teeth back, but eh, whatever. I guess this shit is inevitable.

Are yours completely as bad as they were to begin with, or just slightly so?

I have to think that that's fairly atypical. Have you spoken to the people who've done the orthodontic work or your dentist about that happening? Braces cost too much for that shit to happen, heh, I know many a person who have had their teeth revert a bit, but never all the way.

I just had mine pulled on Friday. They were almost entirely horizontal and were at risk for the cysts and all that nasty impacted shit... I spent the first day sleeping or being online a bit, nothing really hurt. Saturday I wake up to horrendous nausea and vomiting up whatever oatmeal and applesauce I tried to down. My jaw was also too stiff to open enough to it more than a spoonful down. Sunday, my dad (a doctor) told me it was okay to take four Vicadin and I don't remember most of that night. I apparently went on Liver and played Halo with Chux and some people, but I recall very little of it. Supposedly I rambled my ass off to anyone on AIM as well. Figures, taking four times the dose that the doctor said I barely weighed enough to have one of.

It's been fine since. Yeah, it hurts and my jaw is still a bit stiff, but no big deal. I tore one of the stitches last night though and bled like a bitch for a while until it clotted again.

I had teeth pulled when I was ten because my mouth was already crowded. Wisdom teeth made it worse so I knew they'd be pulled. Didn't come as a surprise to me.

On a related note, my mother apparently had a (literally) one in a million complication that left her in the ER with doctors pouring in to see the odd case. She also had five wisdom teeth for some reason. Glad she told me about it AFTER I had mine pulled, otherwise I would have been freaked out.

For the pain, take some Advil if it's not painful enough to warrant prescription drugs. Ibuprofen is great for toothaches.

I guess I'm lucky with my wisdom teeth. They came in, it hurt like a bitch, but after they were settled, I had more teeth and could chew food more easily. Wisdom teeth kick ass.

Mine hurt a little, they should've been taken out but I got discharged from the Marines before they were going to do it and I can't afford to do it on my own so I'm just kinda screwed. I really don't give a fuck about my teeth being super-straight anyway, I told my parents this before they put braces on my teeth and I still stand by it.

I went through three years of braces, and an orthodontic appliance that resembled a hydraulic piston system, to straighten my teeth and fix my jaw. I'm very upset that my wisdom teeth weren't taken out soon enough before they made my top teeth all crooked again. Can't afford t get braces for a second time, so I'm stuck with overlap on my front teeth (it's not that noticeable, but it bothers me to feel).

I'm pretty much in the boat of waiting for it to pass. They started hurting on Sunday.. or about then. So it's been almost a week. It should be ok within 2 days, I'd say.

If not, I might have to visit the dentist but I have no benefits/insurance from only having a part time job right now and being a non student so I'd hate to see the pricetag...... :\

All four of my wisdom teeth were impacted to I had them removed about 3 years ago.

BTW, I got them all out at once and I didn't get put to sleep for it like just about everyone else in the world seems to. You fucking pussies.

As for the people whose teeth had gotten crooked again after wearing braces, you guys do realize you're supposed to wear your retainer pretty much the rest of your life, right? I mean, at least a few nights a week while you sleep. I don't know if that would have counteracted the wisdom teeth coming in, though, but it might have helped. Still, the same thing happened to me (thought not too badly), so I got braces again for a short period after I got my wisdom teeth taken out just to straighten things out.

And Nomi, you can usually get payment plans for braces if you can't afford it all up front.

My wisdom teeth came in on the bottom perfectly, and apparently they were coming in on the top too by last check-up. I didn't even feel any discomfort, let alone pain. Most of my teeth are perfectly, naturally straight. One small tooth is causing a problem up front though, so I'll have to have one pulled.

I'm going to need them pulled eventually. The bottom right one seems to be just below the gumline waiting to do something. I'm not looking foward to it.

Having your wisdom teeth pulled is great, because they give you vicitan. Whoo!

Had mine pulled about four years ago. Didnt hurt, even without the drugs. Though, my bottom teeth move around a lot now. Hell, my right side doesn't even touch when I close my jaw. Dentist says its a crossbite or whatever.

I just can't wait until the other 3 wisdom teeth finish their process.

I can see them, the top ones I think are in already but the left one in my mouth is still coming through so I guess this week will be relived (minus the flu) unless that one is not a problem.

Maybe the one on the right side is coming in crooked i dunno. It just has my cheek really sore.

Yea I'm in the same boat. my top 2 teeth are in perfect, my bottom left is almost fully grown in, but my bottom right is still partially concealed. I'll brush my teeth and go to bed and wake up in the morning and find a peanut from my crunchy peanut butter i had for dinner in there. The other horrible thing is that i always try to get the food out of there with my tounge, which causes me to get little sores on the tip of my tounge.

On other other hand, I hear getting them taken out is a real bitch. And you can tell stupid people that you are smarter becasue you have all your wisdom teeth in... youd be suprised how many people believe it.

EDIT: And I thought I was the shit because I had a wisdom tooth at like 14 years old.

I got my wisdom teeth taken out on Monday this week; I had impacted molars, I got both my top and bottom teeth removed. So far everything's going pretty well, even though I'm still a bit swollen.

For my medication; I'm required to take amoxicillin to prevent any infection, for the pain I've been given vicodin to roll on. :p I'm not abusing the use of it of course.

Yes, I wore the top and bottom retainers that are similar to those InvisAlign things until the orthodontist said I didn't need to more than two nights a week. I kept that up for a reasonable time, stopped just last year. And I was specifically told that my wisdom teeth were the cause of my upper front teeth going crooked from pressure. :-/

And when two other people in the house also need braces, my two crooked teeth aren't a priority so I'll just stick it out until I'm an adult and go the InvisAlign way then. It's not a huge deal, just very annoying to me.

Mine have been starting to pop up lately. I'm hoping I won't have to get them removed or anything like that, although I wouldn't mind some laughing gas.

I've had my top molars grow out nicely, but never seen the bottom row once. No pain either. Either way I think mine could be impacted but I've never felt anything.

I'm 28 btw, so I know mine's long overdue.

I had braces when I was young. All my wisdom teeth came out perfectly. They've been out since I was like 18 yrs old. I didnt have any pain at all and no swelling. I didnt even know they came out until the dentist told me.

The dentist said there was a 95% chance mine would come in perfectly and I'd never have problems. But since my insurace was going to run out in 6 months that I sould go ahead and have them pulled. I was fucked up all day after that. And I never had any pain whatsoever.

How much did you take at a time? I take one every 6 or 8 hours, and that's only if I'm feeling a major edge of pain.

It's not good to overdose on this shit, it'll ruin your liver. :\

I had all 4 of them taken out in 1 day...and it was a good thing I did it over my month-long Winter Break in 2002.

I don't remember man, that was like 4 years ago. I just know I took about twice as much as I was supposed to. And drinking will ruin my liver way before that ever would.

Ok, so it's been almost 2 weeks now.. well a week and a 1/2. Anyways, I don't really get much pain anymore but I still can't chew properly. I looked at the teeth (bottom left side) and I can clearly see it now.

When do you regain full chewing power again? I want to eat some solid good food but I still can't chew it that well. I notice everyday I can chew a bit better but the teeth still look like they have a tiny layer of gums still on them but only in certain areas of the teeth.
So maybe a couple more days and I should be ok? Or is this too long and I should go to the dentist?

I had all 4 pulled out right before I turned 18. The only time they really hurt was 2 days later when I was playing football and got hit in the mouth, but the vicatin took that away. Everything was back to normal 3 days after the surgery, I ended up taking the stitches out myself after 6 days.

I just got mine done a few days after Christmas. All 4 at the same time too. I never really had much pain except for a few hours after surgery. But whatever they put in that I.V. to put me to sleep made me really disoriented and emotional when I woke up. I was completely out of it. And it will ooze blood for a while but other than that I had no problems with it other than looking like a chipmunk for about a week. Plus they put me on oxycodone...soooo I was about on cloud 9 anyway.

I got mine done almost a year ago. All four were completely impacted, and I only had a little pressure on the top row. One tooth, which uses to be really far back in my mouth, is now crooked, but otherwise everything is fine. The procedure is nothing; they stick an I.V. in you, you fall asleep and wake up right insantly with everything done. Everything spins and you feel like you're going to vomit for a couple of hours, but for the most part it doesn't hurt until several hours later. I got some 200mg aspirin which definently did the trick and Hydrocodine, which does NOTHING. I wanted some damn Vicadin.

And about the jaw alignment thing: My bottom jaw became a little misaligned a couple of weeks before I got them taken out. It was really annoying and bothered me so much. But a few days after the surgery, it was fine.

And get ready to get a shitload of food stuck in your holes. Most annoying part about getting them out.

I remember when I felt the pain of my wisdom teeth coming in. It was on Thanksgiving day back in 2003. I couldn't eat shit and I couldn't sleep at night.

That's probably the worst weekend to be having wisdom teeth issues.

I got all 4 pulled when i was 17, got knocked out for it, and then developed a dry socket which made all the pain ive ever had from stitches, broken bones put together not even come close to the pain of a dry socket. It was new years eve and my mom made my dentist come in to take care of me, it was kind of funny because he showed up in a tuxedo. :lol:

Getting all 4 pulled tomorrow though only 1 is impacted.

I'll be on an opiate high all weekend. :)

I don't know why they're knocking me out for it though. Seems like overkill.

It's most likely from swelling. I had impacted wisdom teeth a couple years ago so I got them pulled (they didn't really hurt but they were pushing my other teeth forward and I was afraid I'd need braces again eventually. In my experience people (myself included) drive themselves crazy over their teeth. If the dentist says it's all good then try to relax and not think about it.

I've got an appointment scheduled for next week to get 4 of these fuckers taken out. It's a good thing I'll have Bomberman and All Pro Football to keep me company while I sit in bed for a week.

I had a wonderful time with mine pulled, would do again.

Vics are like the brick weed of medical narcotics, you should demand percocets and be done with it.

Protip: To get perc's tell the dentist you use perc's in place of vic's because you get constipated.

I don't mind the Vics. It could be worse...it could be Tylenol 3 or 4s.

It's really just a matter of hydrocodone or oxycodone.

Vics suck, I used them House style for years because of my rotator cuff from baseball. You get used to them and feel the pain anyways.

After my 2nd surgery my doc prescribed me percocet rather than vic's, it is a 100% difference. Vic's made me sleepy and angry, perc's made me happy and pain free.

I don't use either anymore, the 2nd time around was the charm, but if I had to have another surgery, you know my choice.

Vic's are fine for short time I figure, because I had a wonderful time on them.

No doubts perc is a stronger and longer lasting drug... but really, codone is codone. I'd prefer the percs just because they're easier on the stomach. I'll be enjoying life either way assuming the tooth extractions aren't that rough.

As long as you don't get dry sockets it should be fine.

I'll call for death, morphine or both if I get fucking dry sockets.

Seriously, worst case scenario ever. I'm going to try to not eat or drink anything tomorrow just to avoid getting one.

Both my mother and sister got dry socket when they went through this, so it is not looking good for me.

The doctor I talked to said that the feeling you get from dry socket is comparable to the throbbing pain that comes from slamming your finger in a car door.

Don't smoke for a week after you get the teeth pulled. Smoking is one of the major causes of dry sockets. Stock up on patches to get you through the week.

Man this takes me back! I remember getting my wisdom teeth out back in hs, it kinda sucks, but its tolerable. I grew up with a retainer I had to wear all the time, except when eating, and I wore it from 92-97 and then I had braces for 2 years because "the angles were off" I should wear my retainer, but frankly I dont care. As for recovery, I think most people are knocked out (enjoy!) but you should be ok to walk out of there mostly unassisted. I drank lots of water as I recall, and took none of the drugs. The pain is manageable. Ice your cheeks though, I didn't and mine swelled up like a chipmunk.

I sort of wish I could have left mine in, but it would have fucked all my teeth up royally. And they were all sorts of fucked up, they had to go in and laser them apart into pieces to remove. But it would have been neat to have teeth where I have little tiny gaps at the back of my jaw.

I got my driver's license today.

They gave me vicodin when I got my wisdom teeth out... and a lot of them. Have fun with whatever you get. I prefer percocets, myself.

My sister had a million complications. I had none. I was eating solid food in small pieces just a few days later.

If you want to risk smoking, I would go for it. Nothing bad happened to me. Just pack the gauze in extra-heavy first, then replace following. No big deal.

I went through braces only to have my bottom grill messed up per being kicked in by a Timberland boot when 12 dudes decided to throw me the ol' boot party.

My wisdom teeth caused me no end of problems- I only used the local, which wasn't too bad, but I had to get a root canal the next day which was hellish. I remember laying in bed on New Years Eve of 2000 playing PS4:End of the Millenium on my Nomad hopped up on painkillers.

I don't plan on smoking for 4-5 days anyway. I've got a painful cankersore on the gum next to one of my wisdom teeth. That should hurt like fuck when I wake up later.

Don't forget the warm salt water solution - swirl that in your mouth for about 30 seconds after each meal.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled out (wide awake - no anesthesia, just novocain) and did the salt water thing - it works wonders.

And recommendations on what the fuck to eat later? I'm out the door right now.

Nothing hard or "crunchy". I made the mistake of eating Doritos 3 days after the pull and a shard stabbed me in the hole where my tooth once was - painful.

My ex-GF's roomate, Sarah, who was a stupid bitch with stretch marks who was hot in like 1999 and now looks like shit (we never told her, she still thinks she's hot). She smoked like 5 packs a day of marlborough ultralights or whatever their called, and justified it by saying they were like not really smoking. Back to the story, this bitch has two wisdom teeth pulled on a Friday afternoon, goes home, then fucking stalks us by meeting us at the club the GF and I went to meet some friends, she looked like alvin fucking chipmunk for christ's sake. Long story short, she smoked like 500 cigs and developed dry socket by day 3, it had to be a record. I see Rich shattering this record.

You know what they say, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink". If he doesn't want to heed our advice, he'll experience the joy that is dry socket.

They put the IV in my arm, got the shit in and I never fell asleep. Gay. The first tooth hurt like shit, and i heard the 3rd tooth crack, but other than that I was too stoned to give a shit. I was listening to Comfortably Numb in my head the whole time while being fascinated with the heart rate monitor.

I'm still stoned out of my mind and can't feel my mouth with the gaws in it. I was just grabbing my lower lip thinking it was the cotton.

Wound up with Vics. That shit better be here by tonight when the surrent stoned wears off.

My god I'm so hungry.

ALso, do not drink ANYTHING from a straw. If you get milkshakes as biff said, you have to eat them with a spoon. The sucking motion can also cause dry sockets.

God these gaws are fucking annoying. I'd say the worst part of the procedure was the pain associated with all the drugs entering through my arm.

Yeah the Gaws were annoying at first, but by tomorrow it'll be considerably less annoying. Heh the way I did it was I didn't sleep before the procedure, so I pretty much took 2 hour naps, changed my gaws, watched TV and passed out again.

I experienced full exposure to the sounds, smells, and tastes of my teeth being grinded, cracked, and pulled from my mouth. I swallowed a decent amount of blood during my procedure - yum.

To help the bleeding: Tea bags (stop snickering guys) help absorb a lot of the blood and encourage faster healing in the mouth. So if you have any lying around, just put two bags in your mouth and let it stay there for a while(stop snickering guys). You should replace them after a couple hours or so, until the bleeding stops.

Hooray for painkillers! I was given percocet after my procedure and I was one happy camper.

All I remember about getting my wisdom teeth out is the taste of blood. The drugs worked. :D

Since it was a lot cheaper and I've done it before when getting fillings, I decided to go with the laughing gas over the sedative shot. I hope I don't regret it.

Just got back from the dentist, took 20 minutes, she actually high fived me, she said I have the best teeth in Solon, woot woot.

Shits starting to hurt now that the initial anesthesia high wore off.. Just made my mother go get the vics. Rest of the day should be fun.

Same here... 4 impacted, all done at once.

I was in fucking hell for 3 days afterwards. To this day all I remember of the day I got mine removed is pain and blood.

I had to have two removed, first day sucked, by the end of the week I was okay though. I think I have super teeth or something, I heal very quicky if I cut my gums.

I remember waking up, and i was crying my ass off. I wasn't in pain, and I remember looking at the nurse and asking her wtf was going on and she was all "Oh, this happens to a lot of our patients, should stop in 30 minutes or so"

I didn't even fell asleep. The anesthesia just made me stoned as shit.

Just took 2 Vics. Hopefully life will be pleasant in 20 mins.

Yeah you need to take 2 vics and some Tylenol for the pain at first really. Is it Tylenol or Advil that helps.. one of them causes the bleeding to intensify.

I didn't have that, I actually woke up when they were still putting in the stitches. Didn't bother me at all. When they were done they tried helping me walk to the room next door. I pretty much said, fuck, I've been drunk before, I'm pretty sure I can handle this.

Yeah I walked right out to the car fine. I stumbled when I first got up but was fun from there.

I'm pretty stoned right now...just a great sense of euphoria but the dull pain is still there... I just don't care. :)

Well, that Vic didn't last long. I feel nothing but the dull pain back in my mouth now. Gay.

I was given too much pain killer one time. The kind that they use that needle gun to put it right in your gums. He shot me once and was like "oh I missed" and did it again. Holy shit he didn't miss.

I couldn't control my eyes, everything went black and white, I couldn't stop wiggling my feet around and it felt like I was floating a foot off of the chair. That was a fucked up experience.

Shit. That sounds like a good time.

I got 6 or 7 needles full of that shit into my gums AFTER the IV was in.

Now THAT was a good time for a few hours.

Now my mouth is in excruciating pain. Fucking baby vics.
