I never did like Tetris very much. Didn't dislike it, but it was always one of those games I'd play if I didn't have anything else handy.

This is the argument I would get in with my friends all the time over Bemani. They would think every new mix of DDR or IIDX or Pop'n was the "best" mix. No. Regardless if something is "new" and "cool" or not, you have to remember where it came from.
As for Tetris and Lumines... honestly, and I'm not getting caught up in the hype here, I would vote Lumines. Tetris is a great, simple game, but Lumines has many levels of play that is rewarding, good looking and overall satisfying. Tetris was groundbreaking back in the day, but I seriously cannot sit down with it for more than 2 minutes before getting bored. I cold play Ms. Pacman for hours on end, but Tetris just bores me silly. I can see myself coming back to a game like Lumines sometime in the later future and going "Wow. This is still pretty fun."
Haven't played Lumines yet since I don't have the cheese to fork over for a PSP right now. But Zoo Keeper is teh new hotness in the puzzle game genre for me.
