FFX Expansion and other Square News

According to sources, Electronics Arts revealed several Squaresoft titles currently in the works this morning at their anaylst breakfast.

First of all, EA stated that, after they publish Kingdom Hearts this Fall, their next two titles will be a Final Fantasy X Expansion episode and Saga Frontier. The FFX add-on will ship at the end of this year in Japan, so it presumably won't be the International version of the game that was released there a couple months ago. No console was specified for the Saga Frontier game.

Also, Final Fantasy XI is in the early Alpha stages of testing on the PC. On a related note, all problems with the Japanese version recently have apparently been due to a bottleneck when registering. There was never a problem with game servers, according to EA.

Finally, EA said they are not going to reduce the price of their titles to $39, as Sony did a couple days ago. Electronic Arts claims that Sony dropped prices because they were frustrated with the market share their products were getting on the system.

We're currently awaiting confirmation of these announcements, but we'll bring you more as we learn it.

Wow, I hate to say it, but even among all the great games that were announced at e3 this year, this is probably what has got me the most excited.

If the FFX expansion turns out to be an entire new game based in the FFX universe, I'm going to wet myself.

i must concur with kid's *dead* here i must know more about this FFX expansion this would be a first for Square releaseing a sequel to a FF game i am intrigued and excited by such news

i don't really think you need to worry about a Final Fantasy game not coming here.

I think that EA's mention of it being published after Kingdom Hearts this fall means that it is coming here. Hm... Hopefully they include the FFX International episode with it. Despite that I still haven't completed the last two SaGa's, my pants are comfortably soaked with the combination of these announcements.

I was soooo close to buying an import Ps2 and FFX international just to get the additional story bits, and the extra gameplay goodness. But alas, I never splurged and bought them.

If this FFX expansion is atleast a 15 hour (or more) sidestory/epilogue to FFX, this will easily make up for not getting FFX Int.

Hmm. I wonder why Square is picking Final Fantasy X, out of all the Final Fantasys released, to push so hard.

I remember reading before that because the FF movie did so poorly, and the company dropped so much money into it Sqaure was looking for ways to alleviate so pressure, and increase revenue.

Making a sequel to one of there hit games is an easy way to do it.

It would be much easier to make a sequel to FFX with the same graphics/models, and a similar soundtrack than it would to remake one of the older games for PS2.

Ah, yeah I guess they kind of have to milk the game now out of necessity.

Though I have always wondered why (for instance) when Final Fantasy 7 came out they didn't just release another game using the exact same graphic style and gameplay, just with a totally different story (or even the same :) ). I would have eaten it up! :D

I agree, most of the FF games I would be happy to play another 40 hour game set in the same universe, or with the same characters.

It's an exansion not a sequel. Like the expansion pack to Diablo 2, who called that a sequel? No one. If it were FFXII but still based in the FFX universe, then it would be a bigger deal that it is. Sorry, just had to say that.

well...FF wasn't as popular as it is now when those were released. and all international has is that extra non-playable story part at the end right? i don't see that as a big reason to rerelease the game anyways unless they just put the movie in a demo disk or something :P

FFX International had:

Orginal/Remixed Sphere grid: Basically you could play orginal mode (which is what we had), or remixed. In the remixed version all the characters start in the same place on the sphere grid, so you can develop the characters any way you want.

New CG footage: A new Cinema that takes place two years after the end of FFX which adds a perfect springboard from which the expansion to start from.

A new final boss: A new much harder boss fight.

New "Dark" Aeons: Basically after you defeated all the Aeons, you could go back to each temple and fight a "dark" version of each one. These Aeons look diffirent (not just a color swap), and are much more difficult battle(s). Think the Emerald and Ruby weapons from FF7.

all i'm saying is that the expansion will most likely get released here. why would EA even talk about it if it weren't?

As it goes, and from what I could follow: Xenogears gets made during roughly same time period as FFVII, Square pours all their resources in FFVII, Xenogears ends up getting cut off and the game is prematurly finished (evidenced by the unfinished game code, code that isn't used in the game, and clearly blatant gameplay areas and dungeons that got reduced to a few words during the second disc). Xenogears team begins work on a sequel, but decides to leave Square for more freedom. When they join Namco, they obviously no longer have use to any of the Xenogears characters, names or likenesses because of copyrights, so the sequel is scrapped and they begin work on a prequel instead, with no direct character connection to Xenogears. Square ends up joining Namco in some sort of deal (some whisper of Square trying to obtain some sort of control over the unofficial prequel to a game of theirs), but nothing is mentioned of Square helping Xenosaga by allowing use of characters from Xenogears.

If any of the companies says anything about one of the companies finishing Xenogears, I'll be at what could be my second-happiest moment in my life (the first "could be" being if Ikaruga arrives for DC on my doorstep in just a few days). Until then, I'll bitch and whine and moan about one of my favorite RPGs of all time being cut short. And I don't mean add to it with sequels, I want Xenogears itself finished like it should've been in the first place.

why cant it be FFX-2 ? maybe by expansion they dont mean the PC gaming sense of it, but mean 'expand'ing on the universe and story.

that would of course be equal parts speculation and wishful thinking.

They were shelved because the movie bombed. Since Square lost so much money, they decided to concentrate for the time being on projects which they know will generate the maximum profits possible, until their financial standing is back to where it was.

well FFII and FFIII were/ are being remade on the WSC FF is huge now they should bring those remakes to the US GBA ofcourse they probably never will

it took them ages to bring us the PSX ports

I don't know. It'd probably take them a while to write Tifa out of the game and redo the entire second half and have it coexist with the original version. But that's just reason talking (over imagination).

no no no mine was in reply to whathisname (sorry) saying we didnt get FF2 and 3 cause they werent popular when they came out and i was saying well FF is popular now why arent we seeing them here in the US now and it took for ever for us to get the PSX ports
they really seemed to not want to give us FFIV hard type
(god iw ould lvoe for the WSC remake to come to the US GBA i would buy 5 of that )

i'm gonna take a wild guess that whathisname is me and say that i was reffering to the NES versions when i said that. and do you see a Wonderswan out here in the US? maybe thats why they're not released here. :P and if you're talking about ports to the GBA or something, maybe if they were ported to GBA or something in Japan they might have a chance to come out here.

Everything EA touches turns to crap. I think this is a bad move on Square's part. There should have been enough decent publishers that would leap at the chance to do this.

i think SquareEA has been doing a pretty good job up till now. we are talking about SquareEA right?

Why is everyone excited about the PC affliction of expansion packs being extended to the consoles? I say, this is a disturbing precedent. Even if this isn't the first such case on a home system, it would be among the most high profile since the MGS VR Missions game.

I don't know why anyone is bitching about the whole "it's like a pc game expansion pack" when we don't even know what't on it yet.

So far all I've read is:

Square hasn't even defined what will be in the "expansion" so why complain? There is a very good possibility that this will be a entire new game, set in the same universe, and with the same characters. Maybe the only reason Square is calling it an "add-on" is because you'll be able to use your saved characters from the orginal FFX.

That sounds like a great idea to me.

And while I'm on the subject, I don't have a problem with "pc style expansion packs" IF their done well.

A perfect example was Diablo II expansion. Two new characters, tons of new items, and a whole new chapter. I still play the game to this day, and the last (read: expansion chapter) is still one of my faves.
