My specific "job" is to determine who is able to build for our company, how much they charge, what's our profit margin on completed assemblies, and coordination of necessary materials to be transported to said facility.
It pays really well and it's cake. Plus, it puts me on the fast track to Operations Manager (CEO) due to high visibility.
You can do this to, it only takes an MBA and a drive to beat the hell of out Chinese people on pricing!
my office is FULL of women, I'm over 26 (and less than 30) and trust me, I love women, but working all day with cackling hens does tend to get annoying. I've fired 2 for gossip alone.

No, the world needs many good graphic designers. As you can tell by that Lynaae group (if you looked at their stuff), there's a lot of bad ones out there who don't know what they're doing.Quote:

I don't need a graphic designer, I could, however, use a good sugar stir(er) guy.

I'm a college student going for my Bachelors in Sociology. I don't work, why should I? Everything I need is pretty much paid for until I graduate. So, it'll suck down the line when I'm a grad student and have to work a job ontop of school.
I usually leave custom designed briefs on the desk of my boss every morning. They have my face on the crotch. I found it to be a great success with the ladies... for my boss. One look at my face on your crotch and they'll be all over it. Trust me man.
Not a bad idea and custom designed ledgers. I'm really into pattern right now.Quote:

That's where I work. A friend of mine did the website 3 years ago. He mostly shot rubber bands at erasers. I'm an english major who's taken 1 year off of school and aiming to get back in.
Here, I used to redraft pension plans to comply with law changes, but now that the huge restatement deadline has passed I mostly run studies on new cases to figure out the best retirement plan design that fits their business profile. Basically I try to make sure the owners get the biggest benefit under the law that they possibly can, while marginalizing the employees' (mostly women and mexicans, it's sad but true) benefits.
99% of the time the goal is to give the owners the max and the employees the min however I can by twisting the laws, but every so often we hit a decent employer who cares about their employyes as much as themselves.
This is not the career I want.
EWW! See, this is why the world needs good graphic designers.Quote:
Yes.
That website could use the help of one of these graphic designers.Quote:

But actually between the client stories (i've worked on a bunch of cases where I was trying to help benefit the owner's mistress..surreptitiously) and the puzzle aspect it can be really fun. The years I spent working with the documents themselves helped me ground my knowledge well for the actual legwork.
But the data entry for some of the larger cases and the no-brainer cases are definitely boring.

Exxon Mobil was the most profitable company on the list

it not only about product, if you arent making the $, reread the fortune list and understand what the ranking is about. Product+sales+employment+employee care+ etc + etc+etc
you are only looking at one aspect of business, fortune is overall, and in that sense you are incorrect
Im a security guard. All I do is sit in the "comcon" main office and just sleep, answer phone calls for those accounts that need to do hourly check-ins and take messages. Half the time, I'm sleeping. Get paid $13 which isnt bad. Use to work at St Johns Dorms, Bear Sterns (stock company), was suppose to go to NASDAQ and worked for Coca-Cola. Worked at some other temp sites and did some personal jobs.
Trying to get a internship for school @ a graphic design company. I'll probably do it during the winter and try and get my foot in the door.
We don't believe you. As your new employee I must say the outlook of this company isn't looking up. I may have to jump ship over to DNG's boat unless I get some benefits. And I don't mean hanky panky either, I mean like stock options and wheelbarrows full of cash.
Use to work @ CVS Pharmacy (first job), then worked at EB and then GameStop and now Guardsmark.

Once you publish a list where everyone in the entire planet follows, then your statements may have some levity.
Until then I will still base my understanding of the top companies on the respected publications with their thorough evaluations of corporate business
BTW there is plenty of oil left in the Earth, one resource may cut off the supply, but there are other ways to get it. You may have to pay a premium out of your pocket for it, but hey thats just more money for Exxon

Andrew, they don't own the drilling rights.
Look at GM for instance.
GM owns stake in Toyota, Exxon, IBM, Lucent, Haliburton, Nissan, Fiat (argh, what a mistake) Singe Steel China, and Reynolds.
They own large area's of land in China, Africa, South America (guess what happens when China Gets expensive?)
They are heavily invested in pork barrel funding operations (immediate kickback)
So even when they lose money, they make it, and hide it well.
So in essence, it would be as if we both sold Transformers shirts, mine was 40 bucks and it sucked, and yours was 20 and it rules (most likely the truth, I don't know much about those guys) but you owed me $5 every time you sold a shirt because I invested in your company, who wins?
Why are you arguing with him DNG? Isn't it obvious that he is so deep in his own company's bullshit he can't see the sky for it?
What are you going to do with the rest of your life? That question has nothing to do with the quote above and if you've already mentioned it in this thread I'm sorry, but I want to know.Quote:

Ford and GM have more assets, but I guarantee that it's all in accounts receivables - and Ford and GM's liabilities are many many times higher than Exxon's. Exxon's operating cash flow is probably significantly higher than any of the companies you have mentioned.
People thought we were about to run out of oil in 1950. And if Exxon's got problems, look at Ford or GM - GM is basically a mortgage company now.
Hell, I just looked up Lucent's balance sheet. $16 bil assets, $18 bil liabilities. Exxon could buy Lucent straight cash, dog.
Like Dyne, I'm also pre-press tech/graphic designer. Its a pretty brainless job and not as creative as I'd like, but I get paid well and every once in a while we get to print some really cool shit. We've done stuff for Elliott Smith, Modest Mouse, The Microphones, Unwound and some other bands I can't quite remember at the moment.
I research companies for a living, and if you don't think GM could buy exxon cash on the barrel head, you are deadly mistaken. They tried it once, in 79, and it was declared a monopoly and not allowed.
GM's money is in investments and land. Operating cash has no merit.
Thanks
The world was a bit different in 1979. Do you mean General Electric? What are you valuing Exxon at? Look at their balance sheets. Hell, isn't GM still camoflauging hundreds of billions worth of underfunded pension debt?
You're 23?Quote:

So, what is it that you think General Motors is hiding? Do you think they have 100 times as much cash as they say on their balance sheet? How are you valuing Exxon? What about the fact that Exxon's market cap is 20 times GM's? Net income is 10 times GM's. I would like to know how I am misreading this.
Who the fuck wears transformer shirts anymore? Get with it.Quote:

It's an interesting idea, that GM is more worthwhile than Exxon because of GM's future prospects and the flimsiness of the oil market that you're perceiving, but that doesn't mean that GM, or any of the other companies you mention, could buy Exxon. Exxon isn't a paper tiger like Lucent or the internet boom companies used to be, its massive market capitalization is backed up at every level.
Exxon can pay for its own research. Anyways, it's a great company, one I have a lot of respect for, and I am sure that they will figure out a way to keep making money, whether it is in oil, LNG, steam, billions of mice on treadmills, or whatever else.
Ahem, as I said, GM has more assets, idiot (directed at Andrew)
They don't make medals for 29th place in the Olympics for a reason.
The point DNG made was Exxon was #2. Which they are.
Also, might I add, that when you look at the Exxon Market, GM is the biggest influence by the way.
If GM decided to wholesale go to hydrogen next year (they won't, just making a point) exxon is done.
If exxon decides to stop producting oil, the beat goes on for GM.
I like both companies, but we must understand assets and liquidity before we make decisions on perceived value by ack, fortune magazine.
Time Life called Hitler man of the year once as well.
You work for GM don't you
Yes. And they should have called Osama Bin Laden man of the year in 2001 but pussied out of their own policy. I don't condone what he did, but the award is supposed to go to the man who influences or changes the world the most on any given year, is it not? (not the most popular) Osama Bin Laden did that.Quote:

Oh you work for General Motors. No wonder you're offended that you're #29 and not #2 like Exxon.
Warbucks has swallowed the GM kool-aid. You are much too optimistic about your employer's financial prospects.
Anyways, GM has been doing some good things, like the Corvette, the Cadillacs - I think it's bizarre that they are choosing to use these global platforms to create new FWD cars that won't sell. They should have been following Chrysler's lead by creating cheap RWD cars that play off of GM's heritage (not Australian imports that cost too much and look like they were designed in 1998, not 1968). That new Saturn roadster looks nice. Buick's management seems like it knows what it is doing.
GM is destroying SAAB - might as well shut it down now. I would have put SAAB into a relationship with Subaru similar to the Lexus-Toyota relationship - instead, Subaru is getting $45,000 cars and SAAB is getting Trailblazer knockoffs. Hah. It's like no one at GM even knows who buys SAABs in the US. Not pushing harder with the SAABaru ideas, like the 9-2x, will have been what kills SAAB in the end.
Who does buy Saabs? Ugliest cars I have EVER seen
Every heard of a tax dump?
My company is worth billions, how about yours tough guy?
My dad can beat up your dad.
If your company accounted for its underfunded pension, you would be in the red by about $100 billion, and your company's bonds are junk.
But is your company #2?
NICE!!
Don't take that the wrong way, My company has made billions, I can't fault their logic, now I don't always agree with them. But we did take Lutz from Dodge and that's gonna be huge.
GM Kool-aid= Paychecks and dividends, I'll keep drinking thanks!

Lutz just got demoted by Wagoner because the G6, an average midsize family car, wasn't selling like the Camry, right?
In what terms Andrew?
In size and assets? or sales? or number of employees? Or average salary?
Can you specify what #2 you want to know?
Also, is your company #1,000,000,000?
No, actually not, lutz brought in the Cobalt (record sellor) and assisted on Cadillac.
Need I say more, or do you think Caddies suck too?

American car fans are crazy. I appreciate their devotion, at least. Give me a 911.
I work full-time as a webmaster for a college university (specifically one of their programs' website). It's a nice 9-5 job with alright pay and good benefits. While it's not my dream job, it's usually enjoyable and the people I work with are really nice.
I also work as a part-time webmaster for another school and two television sites. The workload is really light for the most part, so it's easy extra cash for me. I also worked for a magazine, but they ran out of money, and I don't know if they're coming back. It's a shame because I worked really hard on redesigning their website, but they hit financial troubles a couple of weeks before the redesign was supposed to launch.
In addition, I'm also helping my uncle with his campaign for Manhattan Borough President. I'm the Technology Coordinator, which means I do data entry and mail merge "Thank You" letters from the contributor database, and any other tech tasks that my uncle does not have the time to do.
Ultimately, I want to get into Carnegie Mellon's Masters of Entertainment Technology program so that I have more options to enter the video game industry, but I haven't figured out the angle to apply to the school yet. I've been taking some traditional animation courses and have liked them, so I might take an art route instead of a programming route.
All of the programs I've met sans one have been really anti-social weirdos. I'm sitting next to two right now at my ecard placement and they're both ugly and weird.
That actually sounds pretty great. I know a lot of people want to get into videogames. I'm personally thinking about taking animation to get into a special effects house.Quote:

I work at a local ISP, in a town of about 26,000. The company is big for the region, but tiny in comparison to the world. They don't understand that. Most people in the Tech field are anti-social and inverted people, with anger management problems. I am the complete opposite. I'm a social, joking, athletic person. I'm 6'5 and 260lbs. I stick out like a sore thumb. The pay is ok, but not what it should be. I hate the real working world. I still love technology but can't stand constantly fixing something broken and putting my life on hold because some local area is outta service at 3am.
I am leaving soon, to go back to school and pick up my alternate teaching certification. There is a good market for teachers with IT degrees. You are like a part-time teacher/techie. Which will last until I can get my masters and break into the college ranks. Are there any other teachers on the board besides MELF?
I still work for the graphics end of our university bookstore. Doing ads, flyers, banners and whatnot for over a year now. I still love it. And recently, I've picked some freelance work doing digital coloring and inking for www.titmouse.net - check out their demo reel, they're a talented and diverse group.
This Friday I'm interviewing for a Mac Genius position with California's regional director for a new store.Quote:

The funny thing is, Apple app's are so effing intuitive that it saddens me to think people STILL can't figure this shit out.
