Best Scanner for Scanning Artwork

Very soon, I want to scan my artwork onto my computer, but I haven't found a site that gives a definite guide on what is the best scanner for that kind of job.

I was hoping if you guys could either refer me to sites that tackle this issue or say which brands you use to scan your artwork.

My budget is up to $200 and I'm looking at getting an Epson Perfection 2580 Scanner, but I am open to other models, even higher priced ones if their better scanning capabilities are worth it.

My personal scanner was $30 and I have to hold down the lid for it to get a decent scan. As far as I'm concerned, any scanner I use that isn't mine is like the best scanner ever. =\

You might be on your own. I bought an Epson Perfection 1650 for $150 or something over a year ago, and I've never had a problem with it. Of course, I'm always processing stuff in photoshop anyway, so the scanner is only a small part of things. I assume the one you're looking at is similar (same series) but just better/newer.

I wouldn't buy another one until I can afford one with a larger scanning bed. Otherwise, scanners seem pretty comparable.

Yeah scanners all work pretty damn well from what I have seen. I have used several different ones and got the exact same results with all of them.

I wouldn't recommend an Epson anything. I have had nothing but problems with everything I've bought of theirs.

Maybe it's because you're a woman. Whatever you decide on, be sure to pick up some anti-static cloth (or maybe it's static cloth) to clean. You'll get dust and stuff in the lid. Using this cloth is the fastest way to clean it.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I've decided to purchase the Epson Perfection 2580 Scanner on Saturday, but if anyone else wants to jump in with a better suggestion before then, go right ahead.

I use a HP PSC 2510 PhotoSmart All-In-One, and it works really well. But I won it so I have no idea how much it costs.

I just bought me a HP PSC 1315 All in One. My original HP DeskJet 3820 crapped out on me so I had to get a new printer and decided to get the AIO. Hence that is why I sold the scanner above. So far I havent used the scanner cuz I had nothing to scan. I guess thats why I sold my scanner cuz it wasnt being used.

You can get a good scanner nowadays for less than $200. I have a HP scanjet 3970. Fast, works great, and I think I paid, like, $120 for it tops.

Well, I got the Epson Perfection 2580 Scanner on Saturday for $150 and so far it works great. I can even scan my blue pencil animation drawings into my computer after I tweak the scanning settings. When I'm done with my final project for Traditional Animation I, I'll post it here, good or bad.

Have you played with the dpi of your scanner yet? My Canon one can do 1200 dpi (which is far from the highest) and it's still fucking overkill.

I just scan in 72 dpi because I'm scanning multiple drawings for an animation project and I want to keep the file size small.

My computer would explode if I scanned at 1200. I usually go about 300.

Epson printers are the BEST you can get to print, so he does have a point. Not sure about the scanners though, but the original statement was not get EPSON anything. Obviously that is false.

7 years in the making.

Is "over-grown pilot dog" a Star wars thing? I need to know whether to be impressed or disappointed.

I can say with near certainty that it is not.

I'm of the mindset that anything Epson is bad. I've used scanners and printers from them that just suck.

In terms of brand, I would recommend anything Canon. In terms of price? I got mine (can't remember the model number) in 2006 for $40 and it still works like a champ. So I think as long as you're avoiding Epson you'll get something good for a decent price.

Coincidentally, i bought an already old-ass Epson scanner for $20 around the time this thread was still relevant, and it lasted me until very recently, until my boss bought another Epson scanner that works better and faster.

Nothing beats an EPSON for quality photographic printing. Not sure what models you have used, but th3 3000 series and up is amazing. Canon is good and making headway in photographic printing, but still can't touch EPSON.
