Stop derailing this amazing thread!
One way of being religious is to extinguish your ego so you actually become part of the Ultimate Reality (the Eastern traditions), and the other is that you expand it so that your ego will end up becoming as large as God's (the Western traditions). Dealing with the destructive effects of the ego is religion's primary purpose. As the Buddha said, suffering is caused by selfish desire. So eliminating that selfish desire, through meditation and discipline (Theraveda, Tibetan Buddhism) or working and living with no concern upon effect (as Hinduism became after the Bhagavad Gita) or through love and devotion (Christianity, Judaism, Mahayana Buddhism, Sikhism) or submission (Islam), it all should lead to a peaceful, prosperous world where we can coexist.Quote:

When Jesus said, "love thy neighbor", he was talking about all of humanity, your neighbor is the next person you see. And the theme of the Good Samaritan parable has been lost today, it was originally about supposedly holy people ignoring the hurt person while a looked-down-upon, supposedly-lowlife Samaritan was the one who helped him.
The problem is that many religions, Christianity especially, have been co-opted by powerful people and corrupted. You can blame, originally, Constantine for this. He "converted" to Christianity mainly as a power-grab but still acted the way he did before. Over time, Christianity has become a religion more about what you believe than what you do - totally different from the original philosophy spoken by Jesus (where being a good Christian meant loving everyone, turning the other cheek, so forth).
The Left Behind series, Bible Belt, shit like that, uses Christianity as a save your ass religion, if you dont say you believe in Jesus youre gonna go to hell. And when Jesus returns he will smite all the unbelievers and send them to hell while all the believers look and dance around. A God that would do such a thing is not the same God Jesus was talking about, and this fundamental disconnect would need to be fixed before Christianity becomes the type of religion it should have become.
