Look, I understand that from an evolutionary standpoint, this just doesn't make sense. As I said, I used to be a diehard athiestic evolutionist, then a Christian evolutionist (God used evolution to create the world)... You are right in that it doesn't add up. Some honest-to-God Christians can do the doublethink thing, mainly because they don't take the time to compare what Evolutionary theory and Biblical Creationist theory have to say about the two. Yes, the two don't mesh... but I chose to trust God. To me, it all came down to this: I see organisms and cycles in nature that not only are orderly, but seem to have a specific function. I see signs of engineering in the world around me. If you find a Rolex on the ground, do you think that the sand coagulated over billions of years to form a device with specialized mechanical function? Or do you see a carefully crafted precision time piece (thank you Kay Jewelers...)? I don't know about you, but I see a super-expensive Swiss time piece, not a product of millions of years of chance. I see the same specific, specialized function in living organisms, and it stands that where there is an engineered function, there is an Engineer.
