Insurance costs me $65 a year for minimum coverage, and it gets about 50-55 miles per gallon. It's supposed to get closer to 69, but I ride all back roads and ride it hard. Obviously it has to get put away during the bad weather months, but I've riden her to work for a week and a half now - and will as much as humanly possible. Incredibly easy to maintain (nothing but synthetic Amsoil fluids baby!), reliable and there is noticable money saved on gas. Although I do run 93 octane, and sometimes put an octane booster in it - this thumper Buell is carburated and runs great with the better gas and additive. When I can afford the rip-snortin' 1200cc V-Twin Lightning I'll pick one up, but for now this is my main summer ride..........
I've noticed bikes out like crazy, and sales go up every year. I even watched a guy in his 60's on a brand new Honda the other day. He didn't have a clue - he had sandals on and kicked his feet out while turning, dude should have just bought a 4 cylinder tin-can.

Nothing is better than ruining some balding yuppies day. He's sitting at the intersection thinking he's the man in his convertable vette - than you pull up on a bike a fraction of the cost and steal his glory. I love my Buell......
And motorcycles are also death traps! I have a friend who worked in the ER with his mom for a few weeks (she's a nurse). He said he wanted a bike until he saw someone come in after he wrecked (I think it was a car that got him). The guy was so fucked up he dropped the idea of getting a bike right there.

eh, I wonder how many motorcycles accents are caused by other drivers, as compared to motorcylest being stupid and seeing how fast the bike will go.
Over half of all motorcycle fatalities involve alcohol use on the part of the driver (i.e. bikers coming home from the bar at 3 a.m.) and alot of others are the idiots on sportbikes pulling wheelies and driving twice the speed limit IN TRAFFIC.
After riding the end of last season, and just starting up this one (I rode dirt bikes and quads growing up but this is my first street bike)- I can tell you that alot of "caged" drivers plainly DO NOT SEE YOU when you are on a bike. The brain is automatically looking for something larger. I've had two close/semi-close ones, and both were caused by someone else and prevented by my actions. There's no radio to distract you - you are constantly scanning the road, looking for small holes or bumps - watching ahead and behind for merging traffic. Soon it's second nature to come up with scenarios for every situation as they unfold - "If this guy coming at me in the other lane changes his radio and swerves at me, what do I do?". In some cases you can run up on someone's lawn (and depending on speed, incline, terrain, etc. maybe not dump it) or maybe you have to move and possibly take a fall, but it's better than getting hit.
I know, it sounds dangerous - but there's something about it that had me hooked instantly. Riding has a calming effect for me, it's almost theraputic - and the feeling of freedom and control is addictive.
Unfortunately you'd still need a beater around for certain weather, but I'd honestly ride a bike before spending $20,000 on some hybrid (that's going to need expensive batteries down the road too) any day of the week. The way to go for cars CLEARLY is bio-diesel. If the right companies got behind it, very little modification is needed to convert some diesel engines to run on fuel made from corn, grease, hemp, refuse, etc. Plus, you can have your cake and eat it too, because you can still have the V8 muscle cars and big-ass trucks.
I'll have none of this, government mandating we all drive pussy cars around because multi-nationals don't want to get with the times. Those things are death-traps anyway....... :)

Seriously. My girlfriend's brother had this old VW Jetta diesel that he converted to run on vegetable oil. I think he said it was getting 60-70mpg, but it didn't last very long. I guess using store-bought veggie oil in an '84 engine isn't the best solution. Apparently, places like Wendy's, McDonalds, Burger King, etc. are good ways to score free bio-diesel fuel - their used fryolator oil.Quote:

I've been driving my '89 Mercury Tracer wagon for 7 years. Fuck, that's hard to believe. My dad bought it for me on my 18th birthday. It gets pretty lousy gas mileage (~25 highway, less than 20 city), made worse by the fact that whenever the gas light comes on, I panic and re-fuel ASAP, even though the left side of my brain says it could go 40 more miles or so. Fucking anxiety. Anyway, seeing as how I've never had a car payment and pay around $450 a year for insurance, I'm gonna drive this hunk of crap until the engine starts throwing its pistons.
Damn, I need to buy a new car. Sister might be taking my '95 Taurus. Anyone in the NYC area know someone that is selling a '95-00 Toyota (Camry, Corolla), Honda (Accord, Civic) or Nissan (Altima, Maxima)? Something in very good condition, with no problems or major problems.
I get 45 mpg in my Jetta diesel. You guys need to get on board.
95-00 Maxima's = Transmission Problems
Any used Yota or Honda from that era is going to be expensive or have 150K + on them. Stay away from any "sporty" (Civic SI, Corolla S) verisons of these cars as well, many of them were driven hard by people who think they were Ferraris
