Even though alot of "Japanese" cars are assembled in the US by Americans, and sourced from American parts (though they are rapidly moving south of the border too) and even designed by an American. Even the "Japanese" cars that are made in plants that assemble "American" versions - clearly the foreign nameplate makes all the difference. Or the "Japanese" Mazdas that are European or American Fords (which are ALL CRAP of course) or the "Japanese" Suzuki that's a South Korean Daewoo.
All I know is it will be a cold day in hell when I spend $15,000/20,000 on a new car and hand the profits over to a foreign economy. I want it made here, sourced here, financed here and by one of the few remaining "American" car companies. Most Americans either don't want those things, or don't care. Most Americans suck.
