Nearing the end

Well, we're about 1 month away from the unveiling of the three new consoles, so I thought it might be fun to talk about the current ones a bit and what we've thought about them. Feel free to respond however, I'm just gonna talk in general a little bit and talk about a few games.

Dreamcast
It was kind of sad that the system didn't make it further than it did, but it was fun while it lasted. I can't remember exactly why I felt the need to import games at about $60 a pop, but it was the only system I ever did that for. Notable games I played through were Sonic Adventure, Sega Rally, Power Stone, Virtua Fighter 3tb, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, and the endless plethora of Capcom fighting games. Seems my tastes have changed a little since then... :doubt:

Playstation 2
I saw the tech demos back in March of 99 and felt that Sony was blowing smoke. After watching them again tonight...yeah, they weren't. I held out for a while to get the system because I was still in my hardcore-nerd-gamer days where I felt some sort of hate towards Sony. Dumb, but oh well...live and learn. Notable games I played through were Virtua Fighter 4, Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet & Clank, Grand Theft Auto III, and Devil May Cry. The most surprising thing to me about the PS2 is just how diverse and strong Sony's 1st/2nd party development is getting. I probably had more fun with the first two Ratchet & Clank games (for example) than I did with either Mario or Sonic this gen.

Xbox
I'll be honest and say I thought this was gonna be a humongous, spectacular belly-flop of a flop. I had visions of 3DO and CD-i in my head. For some reason, though, I decided to wait in line the night before release to get the system. I had the box with the system in it and was looking at the games, and decided to take a chance with Halo even though I remembered everyone dogging it at E3. I think the rest is history. :lol: Notable games I played through were Halo, Halo 2, Mech Assault, Splinter Cell, Gunvalkyrie, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and Rallisport Challenge. Xbox was a real surprise to me, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. It seems like Microsoft is slowly creeping up on Sony in game development. They started out with trash like Azurik and Fusion Frenzy, but now the amount of good 1st and 2nd party games to trash is becoming very good.

Gamecube
I was equally surprised by the GC as I was the Xbox, but negatively. If we happen to have any Nintendo fans reading this, I know I'll get shot square in the nuts, but Nintendo this gen has been horrible. Outside of a few select games, Nintendo's been all about the rehash and exploitation this time around. A mediocre Mario game, Mario Tennis 2, Mario Golf 2, Mario Party 4/5/6, Mario Kart, etc etc. Everything looked so promising for them in the beginning, but I guess it just didn't pan out. It's definitely my least played system, and I wish I could have my $200 back... Notable games I played through were Super Smash Bros. Melee, Pikmin, Metroid Prime, Zelda: Wind Waker, and Super Monkey Ball. I hope Nintendo really figures it out for the next gen...


And that's my ramble of a thread on the individual systems. I enjoyed the current gen quite a bit, and will still be playing games out now for quite a time to come. Can't go wrong with 3 games for $60. Now if God of War, Resident Evil 4, and Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal would all just drop to $20... :p

I really like the idea of listing our truly notable games for each platform in this thread. Here's my first pass. Edits to follow I am sure. As a note, I listed games that were ported on their original system, even if the port was better.

Dreamcast
I also started the last gen off with the Dreamcast... got it the Christmas after it's launch in '99 with Sonic Adventure and Marvel vs. Capcom. I was so impressed with it that I KNEW Street Fighter 3 could finally be ported to a system, and I bought two of the official arcade sticks in preparation.

The Dreamcast ended up being a great little system. Notable games for me were Sonic Adventure, Marvel vs. Capcom 1 and 2, Street Fighter 3 DI and 3rd Strike, Power Stone, RE: Code Veronica and Mars Matrix.

Gamecube
Despite how lukewarm the N64, I expected the GC's switch to disc media to bring Nintendo back into the spotlight where they belonged. I waited on the PS2 and bought the GC as my 2nd next gen system. Luigi's Mansion was charming but hollow; Rogue Leader was great IMO, and Super Monkey Ball was fantastic.

I eventually got tired of waiting month after month for quality releases and realized that to survive in this generation you needed a PS2. I won't be making the same mistake next gen of picking the Nintendo system first. Notable GC games for me were Super Monkey Ball, Rogue Leader, Pikmin, Eternal Darkness, REmake, and F-Zero GX.

PS2
Even though I sided with the DC when they were bitter rivals, I eventually couldn't resist the PS2. I got it the last Christmas that it still cost $300 ('01 maybe?) along with MGS2, Devil May Cry, GTA3, and Stretch Panic. The PS2's game library really speaks for itself. If anyone tells you they don't have a PS2 because there are no games for it that they want, they're fucktard liars. My favorites were: Devil May Cry, GTA3 and San Andreas, Maximo, the DDR MAXes, and Jak and Daxter. I still have a large pile of shame for the PS2 than the other 3 systems combined.

Xbox
The biggest surprise for me, what I expected to be the biggest joke ended up being my favorite system. It may not have the sheer number of games that the PS2 has, but it has Xbox Live, which is one of the greatest things to happen to gaming since uh... ever. Notable games for me were JSRF, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Halo 2, PGR2, 3rd Strike, and Crimson Skies.

I don't really know when I get the next systems, probably a year after the first one releases at least. Right now I'm thinking the next Xbox will be my first purchase, but we'll have to see.

Dreamcast
I've got a little under 50 games but only a few that really made a big impression on me: Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Typing of the Dead, Samba De Amigo, Dead or Alive 2, and Jet Grind Radio

Playstation 2
Very very solid list of games for the PS2, the system has had a great list of releases in the past two years. My favorites on the PS2: Metal Gear Solid 3, Gitaroo-Man, and Disgaea.

Xbox
I'm glad I finally picked one of these up because Live is sooo much fun. Xbox favorites: Halo 2, Rallisport Challenge 2, ESPN NFL2K5, and Links 2004.

Gamecube
Other then a few third party titles, the GC was all about first party titles. Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, Tales of Symphonia, and Beyond Good & Evil.

I had a huge fucking post almost complete with my feelings and the games I liked for each system and TNL, like it always seems to do with larger posts, fucked me over. Good thread.

Dreamcast - failure
PS2 - best system
Xbox - Made leeway, but MS may let us down next gen by shovelling shit into their console we don't need/want. No HDD out of the box is already a huge mistake.
Gamecube - Nintendo made boneheaded decisions, console still has great games though, I commend Nintendo for holding down the fort almost exclusively by themselves.

Dreamcast - I got this on launch day, and it gave me many memories with Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, Ecco the Dolphin, Giant Gram, Fire ProWrestling D, MSR, Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure, 18 Wheeler, Virtua Fighter 3 tb, Record of Lodoss War, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

PS2 - Another launch system, and I had a lot of fun with Katamari Damacy, Tekken Tag Tournament, Twisted Metal: Black, Tekken 4, Virtua Fighter 4, Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution, Disgaea, Klonoa, Fantavision, Firefighter F.D. 18, Winning Eleven 7, Devil May Cry, and DMC 2.

Xbox - I waiting until March of 2003 to get this, so this listing might pale in comparison to the others, but I still really enjoyed my time (and enjoy my time) with - Beyond Good and Evil, Shenmue II, Jedi Academy, Rallisport Challenge 2, Project Gotham Racing, Project Gotham Racing 2, Spikeout: Battle Street, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, OutRun 2, Guilty Gear X2 #Reload, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Midway Arcade Treasures, Midway Arcade Treasures 2, and Crimson Skies. Xbox Live really made my Xbox shine, as this list shows.

GameCube - I got this in June of 2002 (five days before eye surgery), and missed out on playing it for a while. This list is probably going to be the least game intensive, but I have far fonder memories of some of these than most of the others - Animal Crossing (most notably), WWE WrestleMania XIX, WWE Day of Reckoning, WWE WrestleMania X8, Viewtiful Joe, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Legend of Zelda: Master Quest disc, Legend of Zelda collection disc, Space Raiders, F-Zero GX, Mega Man Network Transmission. Sonic Mega Collection, and Baten Kaitos.

That's not even counting the GB player, which would add Tetris DX, Super Mario Bros. DX, Fire Pro Wrestling, Fire Pro Wrestling 2, Tactics Ogre, Metroid Classic, Konami Arcade Collection, Activision Anthology, Mega Man Zero 2, Mega Man and Bass, and Sonic Advance to the list. Since so much of that is GBA stuff, that could count as a list for the GBA, which I got at launch, in one of those God-awful, overpriced bundles, just to finally play Fire Pro Wrestling. It was well worth the money.

Damn good generation of stuff. With the systems, I sort of wish the DC had lived longer, although it was one Hell of an amazing run while it lasted.

I'll list them in the order that I got them:

Dreamcast: Bought it in early 2001, when it hit $99. It was a quantum leap over what had come before, the difference between DC graphics and N64/PS1/Saturn graphics is likely the biggest step up between gens we'll ever see. Time will tell, but I think it'll be the first 3D system that age doesn't have a horrible effect on, i.e. framerates, loading times, and graphics will be somewhat dated, but never at the unplayable level that many 32/64 bit games have already matured past. The quick markdowns and budget pricing of games in it's twilight hours instilled in me the cheapness I carry to this day.
Notables: Crazy Taxi, SF3 3rd Strike, Power Stone, Jet Grind Radio, PSO, Project Justice, Mars Matrix, Shenmue

Game Boy Advance: "It's 2D, that's not last-gen!" STFU. It came out after the DC, it still has games coming out, so it's this gen. Bought after first price drop early 2002, $69 (stole an SP when it came out, though I bought one legit late last year). Not technically impressive, obviously, but has had some freaking fantastic games.
Notables: Advance Wars 1 & 2, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon & Aria of Sorrow, Fire Emblem, Mario & Luigi, Zelda: Minish Cap, Metroid Zero Mission, Wario Land 4, Wario Ware

Xbox: Bought early 2002, after drop to $199. I always had faith that MS would pull through over the course of this gen. It's really too bad it didn't get more exclusives and get more devs to take advantage of it's power. I own a lot of games for it, but despite that there's only a couple I'd really say stand out as superlatives of this generation; most of it's best games are merely good, not great, and not usually exclusive. Though there seem to be some upcoming ones that may help correct that (Stubbs the Zombie, Psychonauts, Forza) and of course, I should note as a disclaimer that I don't have Live (yet).
Notables: Halo, Ninja Gaiden, JSRF, Burnout 3, Project Gotham 2, SSX Tricky & 3

Gamecube: I don't actually own one, my dad bought one for himself when I was living at home, and my roommate owns one now. But had I paid for one, I certainly wouldn't feel cheated like everyone else seems to be. Now, it's true that I, like many, own a fraction of the number of games for GC as I do for other systems, but what I do have is very solid and some of the best stuff I've played this gen. Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime 1 & 2 are three of my top five games this gen. Comparitively, only one Xbox game would fall in my top 10.
Notables: Resident Evil & RE4, Metroid Prime 1 & 2, Zelda: WW, Smash Bros Melee, Super Monkey Ball, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Soul Calibur 2

Playstation 2: I didn't buy one until this past fall for pretty much the same reasons as above, old roommates had one, my dad had one. Got it for $99 used. Best selection and highest number of worthwhile exclusive games of the three. Not much else to say, really.
Notables: ICO, Devil May Cry, MGS3, Onimusha 1 & 3, Silent Hill 2 & 3, Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank series, God of War, Rez, SC5 collection, Disgaea, Shadow Hearts: Covenant

Dreamcast:

I didn't get a Dreamcast of my own until they dropped to rock bottom prices and flew off the shelves. This was my first next-gen console, and I won't even try to count up all the hours I played Soul Calibur on it. Aside from that landmark title, some of the other notable games I played on the system were; Grandia II, Jet Grind Radio, SF3: TS, and Border Down.


PlayStation 2:

Ironically this was the last next-gen console I got, so I've had a ball picking up some of the great titles I missed out on through its development cycle. While it clearly has begun to show its age, there are still a number of games on it that greatly impressed me; Silent Hill 3, MGS 3, Katamari Damacy, SMT: Nocturne, ICO, The Getaway, God of War, Shadow of Rome, Z.O.E. 2, ReZ, and several others I can't think of this second.


X-Box:

I was introduced to this gem of a console in the dank, darkened confines of a friend's basement. Out of this abyssal darkness the Xbox's shining emerald glow introduced to me some of the greatest experiences I'd have in gaming. After playing a punishing all night HALO LAN, I was filled with a calm certainty that I too must possess this beast of a gaming machine. In the years that followed I have not regretted my decision, and been rewarded with such notable titles as; HALO, HALO 2, Jade Empire, Prince of Persia (it should be noted here that in 9/10ths of all multi-platform situations I went with the Xbox version, and think myself better for it), Thief: Deadly Shadows, Burnout 2, Burnout 3, Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War, Crimson Skies, this list could go on forever. Suffice it to say that out of the 'big three' (or is it big two?) current gen consoles, I've gotten the most enjoyment from my Xbox.


GameCube:

This was my 'middle system' in terms of when I bought it chronologically. It's never seen as much play as my other systems, but odds are when I do sit down to play a GC game it's going to be a GREAT game. The list of notable titles for the system is pretty much standard across the board, I guess. My personal favorites would have to Eternal Darkness, MGS: Twin Snakes, and Resident Evil 4.

Dreamcast - I bought it mainly because of playing against Tain in VO:OT and grew to love the system with the exception of the short cords. While it's only Dial-Up capabilities greatly annoyed me, I got some good memories from the system.

Memorable games - VO:OT, Jet Grind Radio, PSO, Cosmic Smash, and Grandia II come straight to my mind.

Playstation 2 - I loved the playstation, and this was the first next gen system I got. Annoyed and loving FFX at the same time, I was hooked on the system and was loyal to Sony as ever. I still love Sony for the most part, but I think it could have been better.

Memorable games - FFX, FFX-2(Only because it's the first sequel of a Final Fantasy game), Shadow Hearts, Beatmania IIDX, SSX series, Virtua Fighter 4, and Disgaea are a few that come to mind.

GameCube - It was a beautiful system that was capable of many great things... and failed at many points.

Memorable games - Metroid Prime, Tales of Symphonia.

Xbox - This is the last system I got of the set, one I was reluctant to get because I hated it's orignal line up. And truthfully I only got it to play with TNLers on XBox live that's the only thing I think Xbox did that was substantially better than the other systems. Graphics are great but not by so big of a deal that It would be a selling point, the controller (orignal) was pure shit and even the S has problems.

Memorable games - Phantom Dust, Street Fighter Third Strike (Yeah that's on all of em I guess), Halo, Halo 2 come to mind. I haven't gotten much experiance with the Xbox yet so there are many games I have yet to try.

Dreamcast:

I too bough a Dreamcast after it had died and used ones were going for under twenty bucks. It seems like the Dreamcast is really to thank for me getting "hardcore" into gaming, but when I look back I realise that I didn't play that many games on it, and the ones I did play were all the AAA titles everyone was talking about. I have to wonder if I would have been dissapointed in it if I had bought at Launch and there gap between these titles was months, instead of just the time it took me to beat the one I was currently on. Notables: Soul Calibur, Jet Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi, MvC2, Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia.

Playstation 2:

The PS2 is without a doubt my most used system of this generation, and I own the most titles for it as well. But since online gaming has become so important to me I'm finding my self playing it less and less. Yet, whenever I do come back it's always for an amazing title that nothing on Xbox or GC can really compete with. Even though graphically it's showing it's age, and even though it's online system is horrible, I think the PS2 is still the "winner" of this generation due to it's massive library filled with more AAA titles than any other system this generation. Notables: Final Fantasy X, MGS2 and 3, Jak series, Ratchet series, Sly series, GTA series, Onimusha trilogy, Xenosaga series, Gitaroo Man, Katamari Damacy, Amplitude, Disgaea, Klonoa, Suikoden 3, God of War, Star Ocean 3 and ICO.

Xbox:

Obviously my new system of choice, I was really suprised by Microsoft's system. I bought it last, only becuase it was used, and I was really expecting it to be my least played system. At the time I didn't have live and most of Microsoft's first party offerings were complete trash, but eventually I amassed a collection of games that were not only amzingly high quality but also because of Live had near endless replay value. I think the Xbox did a great job this generation, but since it really doesn't have as many exclusive titles that I want to play as the PS2 does, I really can't give it top honers. Notables: Halo:CE, Halo 2, KOTOR, PGR2, Armed and Dangerous, Fable, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Crimson Skies and not to mention highest quality versions of multiplatform games like BG&E, Prince of Persia and Burnout 3.

Gamecube:

The GC, like the Kennedy's, had a lot of potential but never really did anything. I had hopes it would get it's online game together, and get some quality third party support, but obviously that never happened. The only games worth owning on it now are Nintendo games, and the good ones are in small supply. When I go to gamestores now, I can hardly stand to look at the GC section anymore; it's small in selection, and every game looks aimed at 5 year olds. Nintendo really dropped the ball, and I seriously doubt I will ever buy another one of their systems again at anything near full price. Notables: Animal Crossing, Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Wario World, Super Monkey Ball, Tales of Symphonia and FF:CC.

Dreamcast:
Is DC considered "this gen"? i have always considered like one. Pretty much original games and such, and was killed by PS2 fanboyism. Code Veronica, and all the fighters alone are a must

PlayStation 2:
I got it this year... yeah late. Whatever, i think some games do rock, like MGS3, GTA series and others, but the console was overated i think. Winning Eleven is my game here.

X-BOX:
Don't have it. Well, the HD is a cool option, but i like it the most for *gasp* Emulator capability. This is my personal choice.

Gamecube:
I've lost faith in Nintendo, and while GC is a nice console, the lack of games and 3rd parties suck. While some Nintendo games may rock (Zeldas, Star Foxes) and it has Resident Evil 4, this GC was, underated and overated at the same time.

Dreamcast - Bought it really late, after the PS2 had launched sometime. I borrowed YAWA's for Shenmue and played that from cover to cover though, I really am not in love with the system. Code Veronica was amazing for it's time. I also liked that Spawn game that had the really fun 4 player versus mode. Soul Caliber was great in a group of friends. Jet Grind Radio, and the NFL 2K or 2K1, are probably my favorites for Dreamcast.

PS2 - I bought a PS2 for Silent Hill 2, it was the first next gen system I bought. I was very impressed with SH2, the GTA games, and FFX, it was all downhill after that. I remember MGS2 being a HUGE disappointment, titanic huge. And anyone that says that Silent Hill is still a good series is lying to you, damn shame, SH2 was one of the best stories for a game this generation.

Gamecube - I bought a GC for REmake. It's still one of the best looking games that exist on a console. I cant believe how much Gamecube sucks. Super Smash Brothers Melee was outstanding, Eternal Darkness was a little boring but had fresh storytelling, I actually played alot of 4-player split screen PSO, which is suprisingly fun. Nintendo actually had a good span for a bit about a year or more ago, Metroid Prime and LoZ:WW both came out within 3 or 4 months of eachother and was just what I needed to justify buying this system.

Xbox - Again, shock. We were doing alot of Halo LAN's and I got hooked, so I bought the Xbox last of all. Ninja Gaiden, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, NFL2K/ESPN series, Halo 2, Xbox Live, PSO with voice chat, the Tom Clancy shooters on Live, PGR2, JSRF, Shenmue 2, the Bioware RPG's, Fuck. Not even Fable could ruin the joy that the Xbox plants in my soul. I love the Xbox, the box completes me. The giant controller, the harddrive, Burnout 3 with custom soundtracks, online play, I love it all. Live is the only online gaming service for consoles, anyone that says otherwise just doesnt get it. Truly the savior of this generation.

Dreamcast: bought it for Mars Matrix. Good shmups, fresh Sega games, not a ton else that I was interested in.

GBA: bought it for Mario Kart. I love the old Nintendo games, so I was willing to buy the ports of the older stuff. Other than that, it has a few really good third-party games like Astroboy, Castlevania, some underrated game slike Karnaaj, and a bunch of cartton junk.

Gamecube: bought it for Super Monkey Ball. Has my favorite racer this gen (F-Zero). Has my second favorite platformer, one of my favorite shmups...but not a whole ton of stuff.

Xbox: bought it for Project Gotham Racing. While F-Zero is the best, this system has the most good racing games. It has a few games in other genres that are really good and can't be found anywhere else (PDO, um, stuff).

PS2: bought it for Dodonpachi DOJ. The ultimate system for shmups, it also has the best platformer (Maximo), and a lot else. Best system of this generation hands-down.

PSP: bought it for Wipeout Pure. So far, 3 for 3 on being awesome ;p

Dreamcast - I bought a Dreamcast shortly after its release, and I wasn't disappointed. Notable games for me were Sonic Adventure, RE: Code Veronica, and San Francisco Rush 2049.

Gamecube - The Gamecube was the first console I bought after the Dreamcast. I thought Rogue Leader was amazing at the time. I liked Smash Bros. too, but good releases were few and far between. It was worth owning the system for REmake and RE4 though. I also enjoyed Viewtiful Joe, PN03, Eternal Darkness, and MGS: The Twin Snakes.

PS2 - I didn't buy a PS2 until NFS Hot Pursit 2 was released. The PS2 has so many games, it's hard to not find something you like. Notables for me were REZ, MGS3, Zone of the Enders 2, and God of War.

Xbox - The Xbox was the biggest surprise for me. I admit I was anti Xbox when it first came out. I didn't buy one until Orta was released. The Xbox has since become my favorite system of this generation. Notables for me are Halo, Halo 2, Doom 3, DOA: Ultimate, DOA:XBV, Ninja Gaiden, KotOR and Breakdown. Not to mention the Xbox usually has the best verison of multiplatform releases and Live.

Dreamcast: Space Channel 5 part 2, Samba De Amigo, Shenmue, House/Typing of the Dead, Ikaruga, Record of Lodoss War, Sega Tetris.

Gamecube: Resident Evil 4, Super Monkey Ball 1+2, Metroid Prime, Warioware.
-Although it lacks releases, I still secretly love the cube... It does have the 'console-feeling' to it, which the Xbox lacks.

PS2: I got none.
-Will I ever get around to buying one? Almost did last week, but I feel its too late. Frankly I don't have room for more consoles... One of the major reasons I have never purchased it is probably because of its hefty price; It's still around 240 USD in my country.

Dreamcast - First day of release and I was standing all by myself at Wal-Mart to pluck this for $299 along with soulcalibur which turned out to be the best fighting game at that time. I later dug into stuff like loddoss war, Shenmue, Streetfighter 3rd strike/alpha 3, and Resident Evil: Code Veronica. I also had a blast playing online with Quake 3, Alien Front Online, and Phantasy Star Online. Truely some good times!

Playstation2 - I waited a little bit after launch, but finally caved in once I saw Devil May Cry in motion, which was no doubt a return to the hardcore action I haven't seen since my 16-bit days. Also Ico was a masterpeice, even when some didn't get it.

Xbox - This was a pricy purchase for me having to buy monster cables for, but it was all worth it once I first fired up Gunvalkyrie. Thanks to live, I can finally get some head-on matches again playing Halo2 and Streetfighter Annaversary Collection, can't wait to try some more.

GameCube - You know I don't remember what I started playing on this, but this system was last in line and I just worked on a collection for it, even though it was small, I do have a couple of goodies like RE remake and 0, Zelda Master Quest (replaced 64 version :p ) P.N.03, etc etc. It got better when I included the GameBoyPlayer and got to sit with Metroid fusion and Zero Mission blasting in stereo. I know I wanted to add more to this, but c'mon nintendo, enough with the kiddie games and general lack of 3rd party support, the 64 era is dead already.

Dreamcast: I played a TON of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on this. I played this more than Opaque plays Halo 2 now. I put a lot of time into it. Other than that, I mainly played other fighters on it. It was a dream machine for a while but most games I was...meh on.

Playstation 2: I love it. I hate the online. Some really awesome games you can't get on the other systems. Probably my favorite machine this generation.

Xbox: Halo 1 and Halo 2. Xbox Live. Online Capcom fighters. In that order.

Gamecube: I hated Mario Sunshine. I hate Smash Brothers. Other then RE4 this system would be totally worthless to me. I don't like the 3D Zelda's so even the new one is blah to me.

Overall this gen, I learned to not buy games that I won't play. I think that's about it.

Dreamcast: Day One for this system is still one of my fondest memories in Gaming. Only system I ever rushed out to get day one. Me and 2 of my nerd buddies blasting up to the mall after school, figuring there would be a big ol' Line. Of course everyone else went at midnight, so we were the only ones there.

Favorite Games: Crazy Taxi, KoF: Dream Match 1999, Virtua Tennis, Gunbird 2

Playstation 2: Most used system due to library of games, but my least loved system of the Generation. Their first party games never wowed me like Nintendos and Microsofts did, and Sony always felt like it did not belong or something. Plus it always pulled down other games because they HAD to be ported to the PS2. But I will always have to own one for Ico, and most likely Wanda and the Colosuss.

Favorite Games: Ico, Rez, GTA3, Sky Odyssey, Ridge Racer 5, Katamari Damacy

Xbox: Like several others I figured that the Xbox would suck, be a flop, and be rememberd as stupid Microsofts shitty attempt at a system. Of course I was 100% wrong. Did not buy right off the bat because nothing really looked that impressive. But then I played Halo Multiplayer and knew I would have to eventually buy one for System link stuff. I hated single player so I did not buy one soly for Halo, but then I played Gunvalkryie and Jet Set Radio Future and decided I NEED to have an Xbox. Plus the later addtion of Live makes it the best system of the Generation.

Favorite Games: Halo 2, Gunvalkyrie, Street Fighter Ann. Collection, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, Project Gotham Racing 2

GameCube: I love this system, I really do. But its purely a Nintendo thing, the 3rd party blows and everyone knows that. But I had a lot of fun with the system, even with its poor 3rd party support. I probably would have been a LOT more dissapointed with it had I not had other systems to play games on. If it were the only system I had I would be a un-happy camper, at least till the next Nintendo release.

Favorite Games: Metroiod Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, Vexx, Super Smash Bros., Pikmin 1&2, Soul Calibur 2, Wind Waker

Same here; that's a hard learned lesson. Especially back in the DC days, I'd have 4 or 5 unopened games sitting on the shelf waiting to be played. Games that I'd paid full price for, no less.

Over time I've slowly come to the point where I'll buy $20-30 games only unless there's a game that I've been looking forward to forever, and just can't wait. That keeps me from buying new games while I'm currently playing things. I think that's been the single nicest thing about this gen; there's been so many good games released that they drop in price really fast, and us poor folk can enjoy em too. :p

As far as what I wanted in the thread, I don't really care all that much. I just know that we're about a month away from every other thread being about the new systems coming out, and thought it would be fun to wax nostalgiac over the past 6.5 years in videogames before the onslaught.

Dreamcast: I was one of those gamers, who actually enjoyed playing Saturn over the Playstation. So...

When Sega announced the DC, I had it reserved and fully paid for by the time 9/9/99 arrived. When Sega launched it's online services, this console became on of my favorites of all time. Many hours were spent playing NFL2K1, PSO and Alien Front Online. I rarely had a connection problem with my online games, but it had it's bad moments.

While it's hard to list favorites, I can list those games which gave me a long time of enjoyment. Online - PSO, Alien Front Online, NFL2k1 (They charged for 2K2!) and Daytona. Offline - Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Grandia II, Armada, Air Force Delta and Sega Bass Fishing (Get Bass).


PS2: I didn't buy a PS2 it's first year. I was still enjoying my DC and the games it was offering at the time didn't really interest me. When Sony released the GT3 package, I then purchased a PS2.

Though I bought a broad band adapter for my PS2, I never really played the thing online. It required a USB keyboard and not until SOCOM came out, could you use the headphone to communicate with anyone.

Personnal favorites include - Gran Tourismo 3/4, Final Fantasy X, REZ, Ring of Red, Virtua Fighter 4 and Ace Combat 4 (Haven't played AC5 yet).


Gamecube: Rogue Squadron, was one of my favorite games on the N64. When I saw screenshots and read interviews about RS2, I knew the Gamecube was for me. I bought the black version about a week after the GC launched. Hate the system if you must, but I thought Nintendo did a great job of putting together a powerful peice of hardware. It's a shame that more 3rd party publishers didn't take notice to how solid the hardware was.

I've probably had just as much fun playing my GC as I have the PS2. Here are some of the games I enjoyed: Metroid Prime (Beautiful game), RS2: Rogue Leader, Mario Sunshine, RE4, REremake, Ikaruga, Zelda:WW and Wave Race.


Xbox: Xbox was on the top of my list, when it came to a next gen console I wanted to purchase. The only problem was, that the PS2 and GC were offering games at the time, that I wanted to play more than Halo and PGR. Needless to say, I didn't get an Xbox until October of last year. The system hasn't disappointed me, it's just too bad that I didn't get one earlier.

Online favorites - SW: BattleFront, SW: RC, Outrun 2, Burnout 3 and Halo 2 (Haven't played this one as much online though).

Other favorites include- Panzer Dragoon Orta, MLB2K5, Crimson Skies(Haven't played the online version), PGR2 and KOTOR.

Xbox
Purchased it for Sega's outings early on. Stupidest reason possible. Expected it to bomb either way, but it's a damn fine console, now, largely due to Live. Notable games include Halo 2, Phantom Dust, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, Ninja Gaiden, Riddick, every multiplatform game ever.

GBA- my favorite system this gen! Too many great beat em ups, 2D platformers, S/RPG's to name!
DC- Ikaruga, Mars Matrix, Power Stone, PSO, Shenmue, Frame Gride, Spawn, Geomatrix.
GC- Metroid, Zelda, Beyond Good & Evil, F-Zero, Skies of Arcadia(I know...), REmake and 4
XBOX- turned me to the Dark Side with Orta, Breakdown, GunValkyrie, Morrowind, Ninja Gaiden, and Phantom Dust
PS2-shit hardware with some good games like Devil May Cry, Rygar, Maximo, and SMT3

Dreamcast: I wanted one the first moment I saw the feature on it in Next Gen Magazine (R.I.P) I never put one on reserve, surprisingly enough. I just never got around to doing so. On launch day, after college classes over, I went with a friend to a mall Gamestop as he did reserve one. When we got there, there, there was a looong line snaking out of the store and around to the mall entrance. He got in line while I wandered around the mall to kill time. I then came to a vitually empty KayBee, and saw that they had some. I purchased it, another controller, and Soul Calibur right then. I got home and fired it up. I was simply blown away. Soul Calibur was a beautiful game with amazing choreography, and I probably spent as much time in the watch mode admiring the game as much as I played it. More fighting games should have watch modes. I was most impressed with the DC because I was actually playing games in my home that didn't have horribly pixelated textures, or filled with blocky, pop-up plagued, fog filled graphics.

Notable games: Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure 1, PowerStone 2, VF3: TB, all 2D Capcom fighters, Vigilante 8: Second Offense, Fire Pro D

Playstation 2: I wasn't able to get this until almost 8 months after the launch date, as you simply could not find any in my area. My first memorable game for it was Twisted Metal Black, notable because it was the first one that was developed by the original team since Twisted Metal 2. Like others have said in this thread, if you're any type of gamer, it's simply ludicrous if you don't own a PS2. While it's certainly home to a lot of garbage, there's a ton of gems also. It has a game for you, no matter your tastes. While the "Emotion Engine" is certainly now a little long in the tooth, it can still produce some nice graphics in the right hands. It also has the biggest source of RPG's, which is one of my favorite genres

Notable games: Twisted Metal Black, Final Fantasy X, Gitaroo Man, the GTA series, Tekken 5, All the games that used the Naughty Dog Engine (Sly, R&C, Jak), Dark Cloud 2, God of War, all Nippon Ichi (S)RPG, plus a myriad of others I'm surely forgetting.

Gamecube: This is the only system whose initial shipment didn't sell out at my store this generation, so I easily got one. It's also one of the few consoles that I didn't buy a launch game with, as I wasn't very impressed with its selection of launch titles.....that was until SSB: Melee was released. I can't even fathom the number of hours my friends and I played that game. It was THE multiplayer game to play, and I think I didn't buy another game for it for a few months after. There was a lull after that where no games that interested me were release until Metroid Prime was released, and it picked up after that. I do share the opinon that Nintendo first party releases aren't as good as they used to be. Hopefully they get their act together for next gen. I also have to say that the Cube was my least played system, but from the perspective that "85" is less than "100" (saying that it still got a lot of my gaming time, reguardless) I also have to say that of all the consoles, the Gamecube's image quality looks the sharpest and most vivid on my HDTV.

Notible Games: Super Smash Bros: Melee, Metroid Prime series, Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symphonia, Resident Evil 4, Paper Mario 2, Beyond Good and Evil (only version available at time of purchase), Viewtiful Joe

XBox: To be honest, I didnt really know what to think of the XBox when it was released. It was bulky, didn't know how to take its harddrive feature, and it was an unknown entity to console gaming. However, I was happy for the fact that there was an American born console in gaming again, even though it was the much feared and maligned Microsoft, so I took a chance and purchased it, and I'm glad I did. 2 things that the XBox has shown me is that Western *CONSOLE* game development has come along way since the "dark ages" (yes, I know there's western games on other consoles, but the bulk of XBox's library was West-centric), and Japanese market itself withstanding, a console can survive without the support of big name Japanese developers. From the moment I plugged the system up and fired up Halo, I was awestruck. The game had extremely top-tier production values and atmosphere. Then and there I knew the console was destined for greatness, and it hasn't dispointed. While I started to worry when the lack-luster post-Halo releases started appearing, It then picked up, and I haven't looked back. XBox's certainly the most flexible of the 3 consoles with its home-brew scene, emulators, and modding capabilities. I really just hope that Microsoft doesn't let all this go to their head and screw up the next-gen system with their "improvements". I also shouldn't have to repeat how much XBox Live extends the life of a game (and the console itself)

Notible games: Halo, Ninja Gaiden, KOTOR series, Jade Empire, TJ&E3 (I was a big fan of the orginal, and thought this game was also good, so cut me some slack!), PGR2, NFL2K*, Doom3, Morrowind

I, for one, enjoyed all the consoles, and I'm eagerly anticipating the arrival of next gen.

I also would like to point out that, while not perfect, Spiderman 2 was probably one of the best comic book based games I've ever played that included the third dimension.

Dreamcast was a solid system but Sega's incompetence in marketing and their past failures doomed it. It had a great launch but by the time 2000 rolled around nobody was buying it. Hot new games would come out and be collecting dust on the shelf a week later. SegaNet was also the worst online gaming system I have ever seen in my life, and I used TEN and MPlayer.

PlayStation 2 turned out to be a great system.

GameCube ended up being terrible and its embarrassing that the same company that made the SNES could sink to such lows. Nintendo's game lineup was pretty fucking miserable, as well. The best games Nintendo released this generation were made by (A) Retro, and (B) Sega. Sad.

Xbox turned out to be that rare system that combined original ideas with great execution. The HD feature was revolutionary and Live blew the PS2 implementation away. You can tell Microsoft just asked developers what they wanted in a system and put all that shit in. It had none of the 4meg VRAM type garbage of PS2. The system wasnt perfect but all considering it was Microsoft's first system, it was amazing.

Overall I'd say video games this generation are, on the whole, significantly better than video games in the 32-bit era. The only genre I don't think's been hands-down improved is racing--my favorite racers are still Colin McRae 2.0, Wipeout 3, and Ridge Racer Type 4.

This generation has been pretty rad, with great titles on all systems making them all well worth owning.

I think GBA was a huge Nintendo miss, but it sold like crazy. Just Remakes, remakes, remakes...

Recon, there are far more than just remakes on the GBA.

GBA was worth it to me just for the 3 Castlevania games and Metroid Fusion. M&L: Superstar Saga was awesome also. That is all the system needed for it's library.

I didn't expect good boss fights out of Activision. They seem to be stuck in the notion of putting timers on everything and frustrating / annoying game design.

Dreamcast: Bought on launch day after being a huge Sega fan for years (Genesis, Sega-CD, CD-X, Gamegear, etc.) Games I got the most joy from are: Test Drive Lemans, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Sega GT, Crazy Taxi, Metropolis Street Racer, SoulCaliber, Phantasy Star Online. I now have my Dreamcast hooked up to a monitor in my office with about 40 games to play including Bleemcast for Gran Toursimo. ;)

Playstation 2: Waited outside Best Buy for 13 hours on launch day to buy one. Bought SSX and Midnight Club at the time. Played both a lot and liked them but saw nothing else in the catalog to spark my interest. Ebay'd it by Christmas for a small profit.

XBox: Wasn't going to buy this system until a friend of mine who bought 2 showed off some of the games to me. I bought his second unit and now I have 3 Xboxes and over 120 games. The standouts for me are: Project Gotham Racing 2, Rallisport Challenge 2, Splinter Cell (all versions), Rainbow Six (all versions), Halo, Halo 2, Doom 3, Chronicles of Riddick, Burnout 1-2 (not 3 since EA ruined the Live experience), Colin McRae Rally series, Full Spectrum Warrior. Also any game with a solid Live implementation got extra marks in my book, even if the game itself was average at best.

Gamecube: Don't have one but played a lot of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.

Gameboy Advance SP: Bought one solely to play FF:CC. Soon to be sold with the PSP taking its place.

Yep, works like a charm with the DC-VGA Adapter from Madness Gameware that I have. It's the orange one.

Before I brought the DC to work, I used to play it at home on my Dell 19" LCD monitor and it sure did look sugary sweet.
