Do you think the next Xbox will be backwards compatible.
Is Microsoft still planning to have a version with a harddrive and one without? 'cuz if so, then I predict that the HD versions will have backwards compatibility and the non versions won't.

It should, it really should, but I doubt it.
I hope it does. It will save me money and space which I would prefer.
I don't think it will, and I couldn't care less. What are you honestly going to play from the Xbox's library 3 years from now? 3D games age like shit. The PS1's entire 3D library is unplayable now.
I'll still come back and play the Silent Hill games and Metal Gear Solid games, ICO, ReZ, etc. I don't care what comes down the pipe, those will always look atleast 'good' if not great. They're the 'games as art' phenomenon. You don't discard art simply because it's outdated.
You just named a bunch of PS2 games. What Xbox games are you going to be playing three years from now?Quote:

I played Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear 2 Substance on the Xbox. Other than that, maybe Ninja Gaiden? Surely graphics won't get so fantastic that Ninja Gaiden will seem as outdated as a PS1 game. Any Team Ninja game for that matter should be able to stand for atleast another console generation and not look overtly dated.Quote:

I'm in the crowd of wanting it to be, but not expecting it. I always keep my systems around so I won't -need- backwards compatibility, but it couldn't hurt, you know? I'm sure it'd please plenty of people and I wouldn't mind having the option.
I don't give a shit about backwards compatibility, since I don't play any Xbox games anyway, but if the next Xbox doesn't come with something similar to Xbox Media Center, I'm not buying it.
It won't be, and I don't care either way. Also, the idea of completely foregoing new games on new hardware solely because the new hardware doesn't play your old games is idiotic.
Yeah, because the launch titles are traditionally bountiful and always triple-A.
I think we know whose being idioitic here.
yes i think itll be backwards compatable. weather the hdd add-on is necessary for it remains to be seen.

We've spent today doing a little more digging. It seems the Xbox 360 will use AES Encryption (XeCryptAesCbc), executable files are XEX and not XBE (xshell.xex) and after studying the kernel there is everything in place for backwards compatibility.
It can all change of course but interesting all the same.
We do. My statement has nothing to do with launch games, or the anticipated quality of any games on any platform, or that anyone should purchase any particular platform.Quote:

If I ignore the fact that Microsoft has previously indicated no, I would totally guess yes. Sony plans to have it, and it is already confirmed for Revolution. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft has changed their minds since they last said something (which was a long time ago).
I want it to be in, but don't see it happening. Prove me wrong, Microsoft, prove me wrong.
Actually Sony has said this might be their first system without Backwards Compatibility.Quote:

Especially since taking it out would imply that perhaps it was a failed design in the PS2, which I certainly don't think was the case. If anything, I always thought it was one of the console's major early selling points.Quote:

Yeah. MS also said that there would be no regional lockout on the Xbox...Quote:

I'd be mostly interested in it so I can free up space in my entertainment center. Or, I could use the X360 to go on Live while I leave my Xbox modded (it's currently soft-modded, and to go online I have to un-mod and re-mod).Quote:

Not really.Quote:

This is the only reason why I want backwards-compatibility with the 360. After I buy the 360, I'm going to mod my Xbox (it's not modded because I'm using my Xbox for LIVE), but there are some Xbox games that I still want to play over LIVE (specifically Street Fighter Anniversary Collection).Quote:

I'm sorry, I don't. But it was in an interview that they did with someone from Sony. Supposedly they may not be able to get BC in, they're not ruling it out, but that they just don't know. And if anything it would only be PS2 BC and wouldn't include PS1 games. My web access is very limited at work, so I'm sorry that I can't look up any links for you.Quote:

Same here. Panzer Dragoon Orta is one game I would probably play in the future.Quote:

the xbox will cost about 100 by then. So you're paying for essentially 2 systems with a bonus of WebTV(and hard drive functionality in the new system) Joy. I guess you're also saving space.
You all know it's a goddamn smart move from a business perspective. I hate it.
Uh, I assumed the premium was 100 dollars more.
I voted yes only out of hope and dream.
It would be cool if it had it, but it wouldn't make a difference to me. I'll just play my old Xbox.
I hope so, but I doubt it.
oh, and basically all I use my PS2 for is to play old psx games.
It should be there, MS knows its going into a major battle and not bringing every weapon to the table from the start is bad news.
Yeah, good point, me.Quote:

EDIT: I thought about this a little more and realized that you might be able to transfer hard drive-only saves to the 360 through a System Link, but I doubt Microsoft will implement this functionality. They really need to tell developers to allow saving on both memory card and hard drive if the save file is only going to be a small number of blocks.
I had a problem with this already when my HD died and I couldn't transfer a good number of files over =/Quote:

I heard that there's a way to back up files that normally can't be copied to a USB storage device using an Xbox/USB cable. Anyone know if there's any truth to this? I would like to back up everything on my Xbox, if possible.Quote:

you mean their own idiotic guards?
yeah the ones that cant be copied are usually the online games, to prevent people from transferring the saves to their pc, hex editing them and then having an unfair advantage on live.Quote:

Funny, I was able to get the Halo 2 1.1 patch over to my buddies' boxes just fine by grabbing the folder of /E/TDATA the patch created and ftping it to their boxes. Or did I misunderstand what you meant, DD?
