FF3

I have just bought a PAR MK3 as i was told that was what i needed to play a US import of FF3 but..
Firstly I just cant save on slot one, it just bleeps as if it was trying to load an empty slot,
Secondly whenever I walk on the world map half the screen flashes oddly and
Lastly lots of the menus lose the box background so just have pitch balck and half the writing is missing.
Do you know if this is to do with my FF3 cart or the action replay?

One more thing the PAR MK3 is in German so I cant really read any of the menus so do i need to do something special first. All i do is put FF3 in the top and Super mario world in the back and then set it from Europe to USA/Jap and press start.
