This breaks down to 1.09 million in Japan, 1.94 million in America and 3.12 million in Europe.

Worldwide, the series has sold a total of 43,670,000 copies including Gran Turismo, Gran Turismo 2, Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, the Gran Turismo Concept series, Gran Turismo 4 Prologue and Gran Turismo 4. This total is current as of the end of March and covers seven years and four months time.

I still don't understand the appeal to this game. Then again, I don't see the appeal of cars outside them getting me places. That probably has something to do with it.

I see the appeal, and loved the first one, as it was fresh and all that. The racing was the key problem with it, and hasn't been fixed as of GT 3. I doubt GT 4 has fixed it, but I sure hope SOME notable progress has been made.

Wrong, the racing is what Gran Turismo 4 does best. The driving model and race courses are both very, very good.

This is the Gran Turismo thread, not Need for Speed.

I don't know what people are talking about.

Gran Turismo has always had great driving mechanics. Half the fun of it is obtaining licenses and building your way up through the ranks, but the actual racing is a pretty good simulation of racing too. The combination of the two is what makes the game great.

Project Gotham, Burnout, Need for Speed and Forza all offer something different aside from this. They're just different. What I'm saying is that I don't get the correlation people are making between GT and white trash.

The first two rounds of it (Red/Blue/Yellow and Silver/Gold) were really good, but the first two GBA games were real step backwards, and the last two were stupid, shitty rehashes. And all the non-GB games have been terrible. The series hasnt had a good game since what, 2000?

No actually, the Mario "franchise" has moved over 200 million units (platformers alone count for roughly two thirds of that). Throw in related IPs like Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Wario and that swells to over 250 million. Super Mario Bros on NES alone sold 40.24 million copies, which is close to the entire Gran Turismo series total (which includes releases like the various Concepts and GT4 Prologue).

Notice the use of a plural in the most recent post? That would indicate multiple GTs, as in the series (up to three) as a whole. The first one was fun, but the successive games just did the same thing over and over again, negating so much of what made the first game so refreshing and enjoyable. Even the appeal of the first wore off on me after a few months, but it was a fun few months while it lasted.

Dude...look at all the games you buy at Circuit City. GT is better than 95% of those.

I haven't played many of those CC games, since they're ebay fodder. And that was NINE MONTHS AGO for God's sake. Even though it is oh so fun to get badgered time and time again for having a different opinion than some, it gets old pretty quickly.

Anyway, I think this backlash against Gran Turismo 4 has got to be from lack of playing it. I played the shit out of the first Gran Turismo, but when I got GT3 I got bored really early in playing and never bothered to try harder. When I had to play Gran Turismo 4, I was exepecting to be bored because my last experience iwth the series (about 30 minutes with GT3) bored me. But playing Gran Turismo 4 totally made me remember why I love the games. The amount of driving technique required to excel in GT is way above any other console street racer. And while I remembered Gran Turismo being super sluggish from my brief play with GT3, Gran Turismo 4 actually turned out to be a wickedly fast game. Possibly the fastest street racing game I've played, and with the sound and shaking effects it even feels faster than stuff like Wipeout and F-Zero.

Gran Turismo 4 feels so amazingly good to drive when you've got a powerful vehicle on an awesome course like Nurburgring or Citta di Aria. It is anything but boring.

Well, that makes me want to go out and rent GT 4, to see if it remedies some of the issues I have with the previous games. If the racing is exciting, it probably will. The potential for it is certainly there.

That must be why I enjoy many things that the majority doesn't. Things like Lupin the Third, Matthew Good's music, the concept behind Rent-A-Hero No. 1 and so on.

GT4 is midly entertaining when playing with the specifically designed wheel, but GT needs to lose the license test and the god awful boring car specific circuits.

A few car specific circuits are ok, providing its with cars someone gives a damn about. No one wants to race the VW beetle series or the mini cooper, neon, crap car that someone working part-time at a gas station can afford.

Games are meant to give us a blend of fantasy and occasionally some reality thrown in but don't give us the boring elements of reality. I could care less what it feels like to race my work car on Laguna Seca for 5 laps let alone 60.

If I dont' play these races, my completion % of GT4 would be 10% if I was lucky.

GT4 has B-Spec so you don't have to race :)

The only ones I find boring are the ones that require stupid cars from the 20s that have less than 50 horsepower (and they're all two or three lap races). Otherwise, the other specific-make races make you race stuff like a BMW 120, Corvette, 350Z, etc. I like that the game has you driving various cars--gives you a chance to appreciate how different they all are and forces you to learn to drive new types of cars (driving a Viper, for instance, isn't at all like driving an Impreza STi).

That's entirely possible. I couldn't even look at 4 after 3. I came to a point where I needed mountains of money to advance to the next race...which was the same as other tracks I'd just done, except backwards. The fastest way to get money was to race the featureless oval dozens of times - I was actually sitting there telling myself "okay, just do this race 14 more times and you can get the new gearshift".

And what lay beyond that next race, once I'd finally gotten it? Why, the endurance series! Same old tracks, but NOW I HAD TO COMPLETE 300 LAPS. At 1 minute 43 seconds per lap, you can do the math on that one - God forbid if I had to do it mulltiple times to win it.

And all the while, that fucking Lenny Kravitz song was looping over & over in the background, taunting me..."I'm off somewhere pumping hot white chicks wearing money condoms and I don't even have talent! So you go spend all your free time for the next two months going around in a circle on an imaginary racetrack, loser!"

And that was it. When Lenny Kravitz is mocking you, that's a wakeup call, son. I swore off that black vortex of the soul forever, stepped outside, and breathed the fresh air as if for the first time. I lit a cigarette, pulled out a glock, said "this one's for you, Lenny" and shot that game into shards*. Reduced it to fucking molecules.

So when GT4 came out, I didn't buy it or anything. But really, they'd have to make some major changes for me not to shoot it.

More importantly, in different cars. GT4 has 50 different tracks (literally, not counting reverses or anything) so repetition isn't really a problem.

Endurance events are even worse in GT4 as there are actually some that are literally 24 hour races. I think they're pretty stupid, and I don't care about completing them. You can technically "beat" the game without doing them (or even half of the other races), so I don't mind them since some dorky kids are sure to want them. As far as game design, they're pretty retarded though.

Even in GT3, you could toggle which songs played. Or, if you really like cars, you turn off the music and enjoy the sound of the engines and the wind (which is what I do in GT4--listening to the music is boring).
